The old Man Utd Thread

I think the club realise they have a lot of restructuring to do, getting in a DoF and other positions that football men should be doing instead of fucking Ed.

So this appointment does make sense in the interim, its 100% an appointment to try and appease apathetic fans and try to get some positivity back into Old Trafford for the rest of the season.  I doubt anyone is really expecting top 4 to be achieved at this point but a run of wins with attacking football would be great.

If the club manages to get all the behind the scene structures in place before the Summer they should be in a better position to attract the manager they actually want to take the club forward.

Although reading that back and based on the last few years of the Board being completely useless they probably havent thought that far ahead.

Obviously have a deep fondness for Ole, but this seems like a pretty careless appointment to me. He could quickly find himself way out of his depth dealing with egos like Pogba on top of trying to restore some positivity and style. There is PLENTY of season left and a steady, experienced hand would have been wiser in the interim perhaps. If people think things can't be worse than under misery Mourinho then they are in for a shock I think.

That said I look forward to eating these words if we go on a monster winning streak!

isn't this just a damage limitation hiring, they didn't want somebody interim who would try and throw his weight around a bit (like Steve Bruce) so picked an acceptable face to not cause ructions and let the players largely get on with it.

Woodward & Co have written the season off largely and this is designed to keep the players happy until a proper hire is made, not cause more tension.

If it wasn't for his terrible time with Cardiff this would be seen as a great appointment. What he has done with Molde is pretty impressive, taking a team who had never won the league to two titles in his first two seasons, doing well in Europe against some bigger teams etc. He likes to play attacking football and seems to like bringing through young players. He's also previously managed Pogba and Lingard when he was managing the Man Utd reserve team so presumably has some connection with them there.

Obviously the league in Norway isn't the Premier League, but we've tried bringing in two managers who have previous experience with winning things at the top level and that hasn't exactly worked out very well.

Of course there is every chance that we might look back at this hiring in a few months and wonder what on earth they were thinking, but I'm optimistic! If he is in charge on Saturday his first and last league games will be against Cardiff, so he could end up having relegated them twice!

IIRC he took over Cardiff during the chaotic reign of Vincent Tan, when he had changed the shirt colour and badge. The club were in disarray. Doesn't sound like Ole did much right either, his signings particularly were dreadful.

But he's done good stuff with Molde. Article on Beeb this morning saying they play like Liverpool, which is encouraging. I'm not expecting much from him, but I do want to see a change in the style of play. As I said before, bringing back Mick Phelan from his Australian exile may prove a masterstroke with some of the guys who were there during his first tenure, but then how many of them are left?

With Cardiff he tried to play attacking, often kamikaze, football, but that's all the game plan he seemed to have.

Now we didn't have the players and were a totalmess so it wasn't going to work, but signings were careless and team selection appeared to be completely random ever game.

In saying that - I can see you hammering us Saturday if a combination of very attacking football and happy players no longer playing for Mourinho/up for playing for their new manager clicks in, but when you come up against better teams then he may well get exposed again.

I like the sound of kamikaze attacking football. :D

It's worth noting that every Cardiff fan I've spoken to is flabbergasted by the appointment. He's not held in high regard here. He signed players he knew from Molde, seemingly without realising that there was a massive step up in quality, and that they wouldn't be up to it. I guess he was going by how effortlessly he made that step up himself. He will have matured and learnt from that spell though, so it could be good. Good luck to him, I hope he absolutely knocks it out the park.

We should probably take a second just to remember the good moments of Mourinho’s reign. Seeing Ibrahimovic in a United shirt, winning the Europa League, the 3-2 comeback win at City. Erm... anything else?

Scott Mctominay at centre back.

Stats are of course great for proving points on the internet, but you can't say we have been as successful as Liverpool have over the past few seasons at building a solid platform for future success. That is not about Klopp vs Mourinho strictly, it is more about the wider setup at both clubs. We have to adopt a more modern approach (and one that does not provide such ideal fodder for the tabloids), or we'll just continue our slide into mediocrity.

Appointing Solskjaer until the end of the season presumably means getting goodwill from the fans is more important than results, at this point. Fine with that. There is so much that needs sorting out in terms of the setup, it's right that the club should not be thinking about the short term right now.

I think there are some managers that need a good environment around them to succeed - just as there are managers that can work wonders in the middle of a complete shitstorm. I have no idea how well Zidane will do at his next gig if the conditions are less than ideal, for instance. I'm not saying Ole will do well - just that his time at Cardiff might not be that useful as an predictor.

uh yeah... I kind of thought that as soon as I posted it. I guess there are problems but I don't think he is being brought in to fix them. He might be expected to steady to the ship a bit, give the fans something exciting to watch. To that end, he will receive a great deal of support and goodwill from both the club and the fans - that will be important at the start if anything goes wrong. He has very talented players at his disposal, which some managers need to implement their ideas. So he is not walking into a hostile environment I would say, particularly compared to managing relegation candidates that he had no previous relationship with.

Part of United's job until the end of the season is to show the rest of the footballing world that we're not a place where players and managers go to bury their own careers. If we somehow manage to turn Solskjaer into a jaded husk, I can't imagine who else would want to work for us, if they're someone who has options.

But one of those teams is on the ascendency and one has slid into jaded mediocrity. One plays forward thinking, attacking football and one doesn’t have a clue which lineup to play or in which positions the players will shine. One has spent wisely to build for the future, the other just seems to buy random players because they cost a lot of money. One of them is appealing to the fans and one is more concerned about lining the owners pockets.

I’ll let you work out which one is which.
