The old Man Utd Thread

I'm surprised they actually did it. I thought we'd be stuck with Mourinho for the rest of the season, but I guess they decided to just pay the £10m. I wonder how much of that was a financial decision - pay £10m, or have Pogba force an exit in January, and lose the money he brings into the club. I wonder if someone made the decision looking at a balance sheet. Anyway, Jose got the payoff he was looking for, so it's a merry Christmas for him. He can finally move out of that fucking hotel. That's one of the more ridiculous aspects to his tenure - living in a hotel like Alan Partridge for three years.

I don't think I could really post a summary of Mourinho's reign yet. The first couple of years had their moments, but right now it feels like being released from jail or something.

One thing to mention though - I have absolutely zero confidence in the current board to make the right appointment, or sign the right players. We're not out of the woods yet.

I'd love it to be Wenger. BBC are reporting it won't be him though.

Honestly, at this point does it even matter? The season is a complete write off, we just need someone to harmonise the players, make them feel loved, bring out the best from Pogba.

We've got rid of Jose, now Woodward needs to be wining and dining every Arab club he can to find someone to take Sanchez off our hands.

I'd love us to move heaven and earth to attract Allegri in the close season.

I have it on good authority (I made it up) that the caretaker management team will be a holy trinity of Nevilles - Gary, Phil, and Tracey. Obviously, as the most successful coach, Tracey will be in overall charge, with Gary and Phil as her assistants.

Where does Neville Neville fit in? 5 Nevilles would be better than just 3.

Paul Ince has suggested Steve Bruce

The rumours are currently leaning towards Solskjaer as caretaker. If he didn't have that terrible stint in Cardiff I'd be well up for that considering how he has done in Norway.

Win or lose for the rest of the season I'll just be happy if we can play with some sort of positive identity and give chances to some of the youth players, or even players like Fred and Pereira who have been left out for whatever reason.

My take on Solskjaer as a Cardiff fan was he was completely out of depth tactically and he made some terrible signings who didn't appear to be Championship level.

But did join a club with an angry split fanbase (angry at Red shirts and/or angry that MacKay had been sacked (before he was a racist) and/or angry at the fact we weren't top 6) and a chairman at the height of his lunacy. Solskjaer was one of those players it was hard not to like even if you hated Man United, but things were so fucked up at Cardiff during that time that we managed it.

I'm gutted Jose has gone before Saturday - we were hoping to be the reason he got sacked!

You know what? I actually can’t wait to see us play at weekend now. It feels like a weight has been lifted and I’m sure it does for the players too. Hopefully they get to play in their best positions and we have a bit of attacking creativity now.

I can’t believe he’s walking away with however many million though. Can’t they do him for gross misconduct? He blatantly pushed for the sack. Just imagine any normal person getting a huge payout for being that incompetent at their job they have to be fired.

Not seeing a lot of chat about Benitez. Wouldn't he be one of the best choices at the moment? Working miracles at Newcastle. Proven track record. Probably easy enough to get at a reasonable price. I can't see many better options...

Working miracles?

Perhaps sir should go look at their current position, in the Premiership league table.

I'd rather we carried on with Jose than see that cunt at OT. Fact.

That's harsh but then I'm a Liverpool fan. Considering how much of a disaster he was at Cardiff Solskjær strikes me as an Avram Grant style appointment where he is in theory the manager but the players are essentially managing themselves.

We haven't forgot the meltdown, the 'facts', the feud with Sir Alex. Benitez is still vilified and always will be.

Anyway, Solskjaer confirmed. Strange, strange stuff going on. I guess that rules out any January signings. Good to see Mick Phelan back though. I wonder if Ferguson will be exerting more influence over the team with two of his disciples in key positions.

Have you seen the contraits he's under? He's been given fuck all money since being there. Also he's closer to you than you are top 4 ;) But yeah, it would have never happen anyway (see above)

Not sure what they think Solskjaer is going to do though. I guess it depends on what is Man United's ambition this season going forward. An FA cup run and hope for top 6? I guess his connection to the club might boost the fans and players moral at least. Be interested to know what you guys think with the rose tinted glasses off. Take away his club legend status, how do you feel about him as manager, based on his previous work?

IIRC he took over Cardiff during the chaotic reign of Vincent Tan, when he had changed the shirt colour and badge. The club were in disarray. Doesn't sound like Ole did much right either, his signings particularly were dreadful.

But he's done good stuff with Molde. Article on Beeb this morning saying they play like Liverpool, which is encouraging. I'm not expecting much from him, but I do want to see a change in the style of play. As I said before, bringing back Mick Phelan from his Australian exile may prove a masterstroke with some of the guys who were there during his first tenure, but then how many of them are left?
