Would love to see a statistic of how many crosses into the box lead to an actual chance. I'm estimating 0.01%

"First of all he analysed 35,000 crosses from open play in the Premier League, from 2013 to 2015. Crosses from open play led to assists for 414 goals – a dismal 1.2% success rate.

Yet when Gelade tracked what happened in the next six seconds, that jumped, with a further 5,094 attempts on goal leading to 252 goals. There were also another 4,727 corners and 18 penalties, leading to another 80 goals. That brought the conversion rate from crosses from open play up to 2.2% – or one goal for every 45 crosses. Not enormously more productive, granted. But still much better – and a similar success rate to set pieces near the box.

Gelade was able to dive deeper, though, by working with a performance analyst from a leading Premier League club. Together they worked out the numbers could be nudged further in the crosser’s favour – depending on where the cross was made, where it was aimed, the angle of delivery, and whether it was closer to the near or the far post. So a cross from inside the box had a success rate of 7.6% if aimed towards the back post – double that of a cross hit to the near post.Of course context is vital here. The quality of the cross and the player on the end of it matters too – something the data was not able to take into account." https://www.theguardian.com/football/blog/2017/feb/12/football-crossing-premier-league

And for Man Utd specifically... gotta be less than 1%  and that's with Fellaini's help.

It was nice to read we have the highest wage bill in the premiership earlier. I mean, with such a dedicated, talented bunch that fights from the first whistle to the last, I’m happy for them to be rewarded for it...

Oh.

I'm not sure i can buy it that man united just happened to purchase 10+ players to add to the 10+ already there that are uniquely lazy and don't care.

That's some rotten luck isn't it? I mean to buy so many players who all share the same attributes, especially while all the other top clubs buy 40+ players that instead all share attributes of commitment and desire and pride.

That's really freaky. And totally unfair. Clearly there should be two types of player registered available to buy, Losers and Winners, so that man united can only buy from the Winners list.

People could just admit that football is a simple game and even when things are going really wrong, the solutions might be something simple, or hundreds of simple things. That at the top level, decision making is everything, and a player can look like either a world beater or wasted potential based on hundreds of decisions made every second.

Look at Sissoko, or Kante. Or Barkley.

The margins are so fine. It's predictable in our society to attach blame to individuals, and when slating the manager that's not what i mean to do. It's not that Mourinho is at fault, but that he's the only person to have such influence and power to change things, in every facet of the club in details we're not even aware of.

But then some people bypass the players and the manager and go straight to the guy who controls transfers. It feels like being at Newcastle the way people go on - yeah the focus of the club is profit over on the pitch success, but Woodward must be bewildered at being the hate figure. He let Mourinho spend a lot on players but cos after hundreds of millions and no visible improvement that he then says 'yeah...maybe no more signings now' he's evil. I wouldn't give Mourinho more money either.

@Loik V credern I wasn’t specifically blaming the players, even if it seems like I was. I think we’ve got some very talented individuals there, but for whatever reasons they just don’t work as a team. I’d much rather the blame land at Mourinho’s feet though, as he’s the one who’s targeted those players and he’s the one responsible for making them work together as a team. I suppose what I was getting at is that just throwing money around isn’t the answer. That coupled with Mourinho’s terrible man-management and tactics, it all starts to look a bit of a joke.

Pogba has been dropped again, which is probably some kind of weird punishment for something or other. Mourinho reacted to Saturday's shitshow by accusing a team that keep coming back from losing positions as lacking heart. Losing positions that Mourinho himself creates by sending teams out not knowing what they're supposed to be doing. It all feels like the catastrophe us back on after a recent blip where we had a couple of lucky wins.

Edit - on the plus side, at least the bus got there on time.

Is that so the bus can be parked on the pitch then?
