The old Man Utd Thread

I wouldn't actually want him at United. He's every bit as negative tactically as Mourinho, he's just less volatile with his man management. That's not to say he's better at man management - players either love or hate Jose, they just seem to find Benitez to be a bit odd and dull. He's actually quite poor at man management - look at the situation with Mitrovic, most recently - but the fall-out tends to be much less spectacular.

If Jose left tomorrow, I think we'd need someone who specializes in improving morale and getting teams pulling in the same direction. So Kevin Keegan, obviously.

I think football has moved on from Benitez and Mourinho who were both at the top of the game nearly a decade ago but Klopp and Pep's tactics are the standard now. If Mourinho stays until the end of the season I'm sure United will grind out a top 4 finish because the players are just too good to finish below that but it's going to be unwatchable for most it.

I'm not watching the match, but I don't understand the line up. Four central midfielders?

nope...for some reason, its 532...with scotty at the back, yep, you heard that right!

jose gotta go!

When was the last time we like, you know... played exciting, attacking football? I think I've missed the odd flashes of this in the past two seasons. Every. Single. Time I watch the team its all so slow and ponderous.

Its such a horrible feeling. We had a shit time with Moyes and LVG's god awful football. Jose came in and we all agreed yep, its gonna be shit but were gonna win the league again and perhaps a CL challenge. We appear to be so far away whilst adopting the most anti-football style.

I admit I was ok with Mourinho coming after Moyes and LvG, but I’d just like to say I was completely wrong. The man is an absolute poison on the game. He should be sacked immediately and not be allowed to manage again. He’s absolutely playing the system to get himself sacked and take the payout. His attitude is despicable.

He won't get sacked. We'll limp on like this for the rest of the season, and whoever takes over in the summer will have a season without European football in order to mount a challenge for the league.  They might not have Pogba or Martial, but they will have an array of baffling, poorly-thought-out Woodward signings.

Do you really believe he’s trying to get sacked? I don’t think he consciously is.

Yes. He’s acting more of a prick than usual with the media. He’s fighting with the players. He’s slating them in interviews and match notes. He’s pulling out stupid formations, like today. He’s not positively adapting his tactics when things start to go wrong. He’s absolutely doing everything he can to get sacked and take the money.

He’s pissing off tens/hundreds of thousands of fans by running the club into the ground just so he can have a few more million to stick on his pile. What an absolute cunt of a human being.

Yes, this is another worry. Even with that twat gone, it’s still only the tip of the iceberg of problems at the club. I find it hard to believe they’ve let it fall so far, so fast. What a mess.

As far as the owners are concerned, things are better now than they have ever been. The club is making a lot of money. As long as whatever is happening on the pitch doesn't affect that side of things too badly, it's completely irrelevant to them.

How long can that continue for though? At some point surely something has to give on the financial side of things if we continue playing poor football and not getting the results.

Hmm, going off previous form they'll let it stay this way until it's mathematically impossible to qualify for the Champions League.

I mean it needs changing now but I fear they'll let it drift, even if Mourinho looks completely beleaguered and has no future.

Think many of the players are getting off lightly though- their complete lack of fight or effort, that they're completely underperforming should see them face a proper inspection but it'll all be the big bad Mourinho's fault. I think commitment is the bare minimum and when players look as disinterested and going through the motions as some currently do that is totally unacceptable for all involved.

Why do you think the players are acting that way though? That has to be down to the manager, surely?

Then get sacked at the end of it.

Half of them are mercenaries and couldn't care less? Plenty were like this prior to Mourinho too. It's easy for many of them to sneak under the radar and let the manager be the lightning rod. It's the wrong phrase but plenty of them aren't "footballing men" either- look back at past players who had grit and fight, that 1994 team that would play you off the park if allowed but would also battle and literally fight should that be needed. None of the current lot are leaders and so many are happy to abdicate responsibility. Pogba goes on about "attack, attack attack", maybe he shouldn't be dispossessed so cheaply in our final third like for Wolves goal last week.

You compare the likes of Young, Fellaini and Shaw who are trying and playing comparatively well to infinitely more talented players such as Pogba, Martial or Sanchez and the difference in attitude is night and day. That's down to the individual and I'm not having that is the managers fault.

Why, if it's all the managers fault, can Shaw be absolutely slated last season yet be good this season? Ditto Fellaini, for all his flaws and limited capacity, he at least tries.
