The old Man Utd Thread

Brighton deserved the win, well played to them.

What's strange is that we didn't ask them any questions. There was no attempt to get more players forward, or put the Brighton defence under pressure. Think about past United games when we've been losing - we'd be camped around their area. One or two in the box, every other player in a kind of arc around 30 yards from the goal.  Here we had none of that, just long punts towards Fellaini (who did okay) and no-one looking for a second ball, never mind running in behind.  All match we made two runs in behind Brighton, both Rashford, and both times the pass didn't find him.  There seemed to be a 60 yard gap between the attack and midfield.

We look a considerable way behind City, Liverpool, Spurs, and even Chelsea.

You do, but it's mostly down to your manager. Ferguson would have won the league last season.

Yeah, that would not of been the case, unfortunately. Although we may have been closer...City were too good last season, for every team to have ever played in the Prem.

Watching Bayern a few years ago in the latter stages of the champions league what stood out for me is the energy of each player, the way they seem to cover double the amount of distance in a game, glide across the pitch supercharged. Whether the reasons for that be training methods or the confidence Guardiola transmits to the players, or the tactics and domination of possession allowing more players to be available in the final third, to me it's more an identity of Guardiola's Man City than it is attractive football. Watching that opening game every player seemed so on it.

Watching the first episode of the documentary it's clear again how much Guardiola emphasises playing with courage. I've never really heard a manager say something like that really, it's something more than 'we need to stick together, fight, it will be hard but we'll get through it...get fucking stuck in lads'. It's more like he wants every player to remember to play without inhibition. Maybe he knows his system requires it, maybe it's not just empty spiel, maybe he truly wants his players to perform at their best and that comes before winning. Maybe talking about winning brings anxiety of the possibility of losing. I thought the documentary was sanitized, mostly. Guardiola's tactics board instructions are so rapid and seem to be deliberately dropped in there without build up so you can't follow them.

Some articles about the documentary are undecided if something like this is a positive or negative thing for a club to do. Maybe it'd be better for Mourinho if the outside saw something like the kinds of passionate encouragement you can imagine other managers giving every day, yet with him i...can't. There's one in his Chelsea days where he just says repeatedly; 'whatever we do, we cannot lose, we cannot'. He seems disconnected from his players. Maybe if everyone saw the unimaginable they'd be a more positive vibe towards him and he'd reflect that positivity back.

I'd rather he was sacked immediately, though, of course. And he trained to do something else.

Darren Fletcher in an interview with Graham Hunter on his podcast (the one with Carrick is good too) said something that stuck out because of how he emphasized it. He said; 'towards the end of a pre game talk Ferguson would say just as you're about to leave; enjoy yourself out there. Every single time he said that'.

That reminds me of the old Utd saying.... "Go out and play"

He’s not, is he? Seems like Herrera on the right of a back 3.

Yeah, quite strange. He's giving it his all, though.

We're playing pretty well. Pogba and Lukaku have both been absolute dogshit, but apart from that there's been a lot to like. Lingard has been fantastic. It's a weird mental adjustment but I'm gradually coming to the conclusion that he's one of our very best players. He seems to consistently be more involved and effective than any of our more illustrious attackers.

To be fair though Spurs should have had a penalty, and have played well themselves. It's been a good game. That's a surprise in itself.
