The old Man Utd Thread

Apparently Martial drove away from the stadium. Might be because his girlfriend has gone into labour although no one seems to know just yet.

Shame there aren't more of the youngsters in the squad today.

Would've been nice to see some youngsters given a run out today, given nothing is really at stake. Blind and Darmien may not be at the club much longer. Bench is quite experienced too. Playing Young is also wierd unless Mourinho has suddenly decided he trusts Shaw enough to play in a cup final. Looking at who's out, here's my guess for the team on Saturday:

            Sanchez Lukaku

                  Pogba

             Matic Herrera

Young Valencia
       Jones Smalling Lindelof

                  De Gea

Playing a back three over the last few games could all be a ruse, I suppose. Personally think a 4-3-3 with Smalling out and Lingard in would be better.

Well, guess that's going on MOTD first then. Don't think there's going to be any cause for them to do that thing where they switch from match to match.

As I haven't seen it discussed in here, yesterday the club announced that Rui Faria (Mourinho's extremely long-serving assistant manager) will be leaving at the end of the season. Club are saying it's to spend more time with his family, but seems as likely to me that he wants to make the step up. Certainly has the experience. Might be good for Mourinho to bring in some fresh ideas; you could definitely say that Fergie benefitted from having new asisstants come in, particularly Steve McClaren and Carlos Quieroz. You get the sense that Mourinho has had a cloud following him ever since his time at Real Madrid, and maybe keeping the same people around him has not helped with that.

Yeah while I'm very happy for ex-players to be involved in the coaching set up and in the running of the club (would love one or two more in the boardroom, or in executive roles, just so it isn't purely people thinking about how to get the maximum sponsorship income from the global potato snack industry) they shouldn't be fast tracked over people who are, you know, actually qualified. If they want a big job like assistant manager, they should have to interview for it like anyone else.

To be fair we need to replace young and valencia, they are both 33 next year... Or ya know, play Shaw!

To today then, what do we reckon, sit off like we did against sevilla and lose, or attack like against City and win!?... Or both?

We do need new fullbacks, and we will likely pay through the ear for them. Mourinho's "striker money for fullbacks" criticism of City will appear even more hypocritical than it did at the time. It might be the case though that we sign someone who can slot in immediately at left back, but sign someone at right back who is younger who could gradually take the load off Valencia.

Chelsea's surrender to Newcastle was miserable,  their morale is clearly low, and we're going into the game with much more momentum. So we should take the game to them, surely.

everyone and their dog expects us to sit back and counter. i'd love to shock chelsea and fucking go at it at 100% from the off to give them something to think about for the first 15minutes then be a bit more cautious for the rest of the half then do the usual "turn up for the 2nd half" routine

I don't know that we are going into the game with more momentum.  We've been abject for a month, scraping a win against Arsenal reserves, losing to Brighton, drawing 0-0 with West Ham, and beating Watford 1-0 in a glorified testimonial.  Meanwhile, before the Newcastle match Chelsea have been in very good form, wining five on the trot then drawing with Huddersfield in a game where only sheer bad luck prevented them from winning comfortably.  Both teams are Jekyl and Hyde, it's a difficult game to predict.
