Mata and Sanchez are playing in very free roles, always close to one another, lots of quick short passing. Looks like the most likely way through Huddersfield. They look weak at set pieces too, so hopefully we can win a couple more free kicks playing this way.

Sanchez sucks the defenders inside, leaving Mata in acres of space, in one of the rare occasions we've really got behind Huddersfield. Great cross from him, and a very tidy finish from Lukaku.

 

Pogba on for Lingard - will be interesting to see if this results in McTominay moving further forward, and if so how he does in a more creative role. He's been quite impressive playing fairly deep today, but he's been letting the play go through him for the most part, not really trying to force the issue.

We better hope we don't need to make a couple of attacking changes - Mata is the only attack-minded player on the bench.  Rashford must be injured, I guess.  

 

I've got no problem with Young returning to the team - before he was banned and Shaw took his place he was playing really well.  I just reckon we have two excellent left-backs at the moment.

Herrera and Rashford are apparently injured.

 

A very front loaded team. Disappointing that Shaw is on the bench, his performances have merited starts imo and we do look much better with more natural fullbacks on either side. I say natural because Valencia has long since disappeared into the role, whereas Young can still be questionable positionally, and guilty of crowding out the winger in front of him instead of providing support. He is also quicker over distances, and much stronger. I do think Martial or Sanchez, whoever ends up on that side, would be happier playing alongside him. He would offer more variety going forward and better cover. Not that Young is a bad option, but he is not the one who will offer more in the long term, or the one that needs to get minutes on the pitch so he can build relationships with the other players.

 

At least the club is being very clear that he will be offered a new contract.

I'm not sure why he's starting so regularly. He's excellent at the physical side of the game, but always questionable in terms of his positioning, and prone to brainfarts. He also gives you basically nothing in terms of distribution.

 

How the fuck did that not go in from Martial? At least we're knocking on the door. Bringing on Carrick and Mata seems to have helped. Pogba probably shouldn't have started, looks like. Scary how few midfielders we have fit going into the next month or so, some big games coming in short succession.

 

Carrick looking a little off the pace - giving away fouls as a result. Hopefully it's just a matter of game time, he was out for a while.

why on earth, did he not take a couple of the younger attacking lads instead of such a defence bench! like gomes or gribbin, give sombody a chance!

 

and who the fuck is newcastles new keeper!?! 0_o he had a good game!

Can't really tell if Newcastle were just a lot better than they've been recently, or if we made them look that way. I think we fashioned the clearer cut chances, and their goal came at a time when they were struggling to get up the pitch. We weren't exactly irresistible in attack before that though, so once they started committing more men behind the ball we looked even less threatening. They broke very well after that, and never really felt like we had them penned in properly, they did very well to avoid ending up too deep. Relegation battle is going to be interesting this season, usually it's a competition to see who is the least shit, but most of the teams down there seem to be improving, or are at least showing quality in flashes.

 

City are not very far off being able to draw all their remaining games and still win the league. Just need 18 points from 11 now.
