The old Man Utd Thread

Yeah, another brilliant goal from him.  Is he just in unbelievable form, or has he taken a step up this season and can be considered a genuinely top-class player?  One of the first names on the teamsheet at the moment.

Also, Lukaku did brilliantly for his goal.  A powerful run, intelligent pass, and then he did well to put it away after Martial's return pass to him was absolute dogshit.

Well, he had already kicked on somewhat even before his recent hot streak, goals aside his general play and decision making has got better too. As recently as the summer, I thought he was going to be someone who would be a squad player for a few years, and then maybe got sold to Everton. I don't think that anymore, obviously. His recent goals have come against middling opposition I guess, but then again he's scored the occasional worldie against top-class opponents in the past. In any case, there are very few players that can score long-range screamers with any degree of regularity, so a case of wait and see I guess.

not gonna lie, but the constant reports of us going for ozil and  bale are a bit concerning, they would cost too much in wages, and they are really to old to have any resale value, or long term at the club, seems its jose being jose and singing player at the wrong end of the career for short term success as opposed to long term... *sigh*

I don't think Ozil would be a bad move at all, given that the only creative players we have right now are Pogba and Mata really - and he would definitely contribute more assists than Juan. Also he's not someone who's ever particularly relied on pace (he is good when involved in quick transitions but that's not his whole game) - I don't see why he couldn't play another 3-4 seasons at the top level. The club seemed to be looking at him back when he was still in Germany, and he's only got better since then. Tell me this doesn't look tasty:

                Lukaku
      Martial
                       Ozil
              Pogba

         Matic Herrera

Shaw Valencia
          Jones Bailly

              De Gea

A bit reliant on the fullbacks for width, but Martial and Lukaku are both very effective out wide too, and Pogba is adept at drifting in when they vacate that space (assuming he's being played in an advanced role). Maybe invert the midfield triangle and play Pogba and Ozil next to each other against opposition that will sit deep. I could see Ozil being very effective in a 3-4-3 as well. Yeah because he's on a free his wages would likely be mad, other clubs would be in for him and he would be able to pick the best offer. However... because there would be no fee the overall cost wouldn't be too crazy, particularly considering the market in general.

Bale however has been barely playing of late, and is much more reliant on his physical attributes obviously. So unless he would be quite cheap, probably not worth it.

I would like to see us getting some cover in central midfield as a priority though, given that it's up in the air as to whether Carrick will play for us again, and that Fellaini also seems to be off. Every other position has more than enough cover. I was concerned about right-back, but Young and Lindelof both look like better options there than Darmian at the moment.

That line-up fails to include Messi Lingard.

Seriously though, I don't like the fact that it doesn't include a single player that has come through the ranks.  We always include at least one player the club has developed, with Rashford and Lingard flying the flag at the moment.  Before Mourinho was appointed we had this record of having had a player from our academy play in every match day squad for over 80 years.  That record was still going as of last October, and as far as I know it is still going.  Fuck throwing that away to have Ozil in there.  He isn't even an upgrade on the players we have.

On current form, I would probably have Lingard in that XI over Ozil, for what it's worth. For a lot of this season (but not at the moment) I would've wanted Rashford there instead of Martial too. I think one of the main advantages of bringing in a player like Ozil would be that we could drop / rest Pogba and still have someone with that kind of unpredictable, match-winning creativity on the pitch. Lingard has shown that recently but Rashford (for all his good qualities) not so much. It isn't really an either / or between bringing one player in and keeping the record in any case.

That's where Herrera has been, trapped inside posters used to advertise football matches. I hope he's alright, paralyzed in that position.

I saw Blind linked with a move to Barcelona, and you think of that club as wanting players of a different technical calibre, it's something else really than anywhere [Real Madrid aside maybe], and makes you realise that outside our tedious bubble of amnesia driven urge for replacing very good players in a cycle of hopeless desperationohgodmakeitstop. Like Arsenal as well though, despite them being 5th forever now. They've got to play the Arsenal way, even though it doesn't work. But I can totally see Blind at Barcelona, selfless, adaptable, beautiful jaw.

Nevermind, here's to another half a billion spent on players you see at other clubs who also underachieve, lots and lots of moaning and broken record playing (from me I know) and the continuation of football being the microcosm of society whereby you don't shape the essence of what you're doing but pick at the supposed poison, the deadwood, like a virus to get rid of it, the professional players, international stars who got to their position above millions upon millions of talented youngsters, rendered poo by moments of poor decision making and lack of concentration as directed by a sociopathic manager who hates to lose more than he loves to win. Maybe we should move on from people and use robots. Maybe just halt the game until we get there. is it just me or is football just a perpetual crisis. I don't want a lot. I just want an entire restructuring of it. Rule to play 5 youth system players in every game or else a fine of 1 million. Ticket prices at £5. Kids in for free. Okay 50p. None of the anger, the expectations. Manager unable to be fired during season. Given one year contract at most. Footballer pay based on minutes played. Yeah..just brakes on it. No more adverts on shirts. Fuck i don't care if English teams are shit in Europe, they are anyway, mostly. Football stadiums given names again. I am not old enough to have gone to games pre premier league. Just the chasing doesn't work.

Players moving on like people move on from jobs is sort of the way it just is and obviously should be. But with football, when you see talented player after talented player move on before they've excelled, while the youngsters are overlooked in favour of new signings yet again. Maybe I need a break. I've seen 3% of this season.

I THINK Ozil would ADD CREATIVITY which is something MANCHESTER UNITED FOOTBALL CLUB have REALLY LACKED. HE CAN UNLOCK TEAMS AND I THINK THIS IS WHAT MANCHESTER UNITED SOLELY LACKS AND NEEDS AT THE MOMENT IF THEY'RE TO CHALLENGE FOR THE TITLE NEXT SEASON. OKAY THANKS ALAN. ..STOKE NOW, AT THE HAWTHORNS, HAVE NOT WON FOR 29 GAMES AND PEOPLE LOSINGWILLTOLIVEL--+_

sorry

Sanchez linked with us with Miki going the other way. Seriously doubt the guy would choose us over City even if we offered 500k a week. Can't see him fitting into a Mourinho side that requires him standing 18 yards from his own goal, holding onto games for dear life.

Yeah it does seem a bit odd. Maybe he's concerned about not actually getting to play - there doesn't seem to be any bad blood between him and Guardiola but he has basically been deemed surplus to requirements by him once before. I guess the difference being he wouldn't have to be competing with Messi this time.

I kind of hope we hold onto Mkhitaryan if we do make a big attacking signing this window - I think both him and Mata have suffered for a lack of individuals in the squad who are on their wavelength, who sense opportunities as quickly as they do. He looks pretty miserable now and may want to move on in the summer anyway, but given he's only been here for a season and a half, that would be a continuation of our pattern of making big signings and then not actually giving them much of a chance. There's too many excellent players who've failed to make an impact for us - I would prefer a deeper examination of that issue rather than just chalking him down as a loss already.

I'm sure Sanchez will definitely be the difference this time, just like all the other excellent attacking players we've signed over the past few years ago who definitely made the difference.

It's actually getting really boring watching this endless conveyor belt of expensive marquee signings come and go. Impossible to get excited about or invested in them when there's a good chance they won't be here in 2 years.

What annoyed me more about this transfer news is the suggestion (by 5live) that Martial could go the other way ! One of the biggest young talents in the world Man United paid upwards of 57 million for a few years ago who I was massively sceptical of tbh (mainly cos it was yet another big money transfer) but he appeared to have an ice cold temperament to handle the pressure. I think he and Rashford despite whatever poor form they run into aren't in awe of the place they've got to, like they just want to play and be good, and

not likely to settle. But then I thought that of Januzaj.

Sanchez is 29, Martial 22. 7 years is such a long time in football. It's such a simple game I don't know what is so complicated about playing and trusting talent, allowing them to make mistakes, lose confidence, find their consistency. Mourinho needs only to teach them, not destroy them in the media every week. We seem to expect so much.

The bigger suggestion is that Mhkitaryan is likely to move on, but I don't want that either. He has had moments of brilliance, and for a time his surging runs through the middle were the only reasons to watch. I want to see him flourish. I've not been following so I don't know which players are going through the depression. I mostly used to associate depression with Sunderland, though it made more sense there.

No way Martial goes, Jose isn't that daft. Surely...

I too am a fan of Mkhitaryan and I've come to the conclusion that Jose can't get the best out of him so maybe it makes sense to use him as part of a potential deal for Sanchez. If Sanchez does arrive, lets hope he can make that right side his own because I'm not sure we need someone through the middle or on the left...

I love Mkhitaryan, but the problem with him is that while when he's on form he's a wonderful player, when he's off form he's absolutely dreadful.  As such, he's certainly not the kind of player Arsenal need, surely?

Odd that the Ozil rumours have stopped. We'll probably try to sign him in the summer. Which is when Sanchez will be signing for City.
