The old Man Utd Thread

Standard of refereeing this season's a bit suspect, no? Unnecessary sending off early doors, then a blatantly offside goal. I don't buy this "it evens out" idea, would like to see refs able to view video to help their decision making. Having said that I'm not sure technology could've helped Mike Dean today, he's getting some really basic stuff wrong.

Wowzers. Mediocre opponents maybe, but the fixtures are coming thick and fast and we're breezing through them. Next PL game is Liverpool after (one would hope) another couple of routine wins.

Our goal difference isn't great and while we're winning we're not winning by margins big enough to offset that most likely, so we're basically a point further behind the Top 5 than the points tally indicates. Still, we're getting the results that our performances a bit earlier in the season justified.

I don't think we're quite there yet but we're better than we have been at any time since Fergie left. Apart from that random great spell we had with Van Gaal towards the end of the first season perhaps.

We're on a good run but so's everyone else in the top six. Nine points between us and Everton, biggest gap between two places in the whole league. Not sure who we could leapfrog at this rate, although it is very tight so it won't take much.

It's good to see that Rashford seems to be getting his confidence back. I thought Martial was great against Middlesborough too. I'd like to see them start together against Reading or Hull, and Zlatan didn't look very sharp today so could probably do with a rest anyway.

I can definitely see us grabbing a top 4 spot this season if we carry on and don't suffer injuries to Zlatan or Pogba. If we carry on beating teams in positions 7-20 and nick a few points off the other top 6 teams (aka the Fergie formula) we should be ok.

What worries me is that we've been on a decent run of late, so I can see us dropping some silly points before long, while everyone above us have been dropping points here and there (other than Chelsea, obviously) but are still managing to keep their distance.

twitter rumours of evra coming back

I reckon that it's all a lot of nonsense. The other week Rio posted an Instagram at 4am of him working out in the sunshine and Patrice "I love this game" Evra commented about coming back "home"...

Quote

Bro why are you awake at 4h30 I'm started to worry about you ... do you want me to comeback home and we can have a little talk...@rioferdy5 I love this game ahahahahahahah

And also sorry bro ..but everyone know its 12h no 4h30 come on man @rioferdy5 I have been 8years there I know that sunshine doesn't come out at 4h30 ahahahahahah I love this game

I reckon the ongoing banter between the two of them since then has just spiraled into him "coming home".

Even if it were true, which it isn't, no thanks. Don't know how he's gotten on since leaving but he looked done for several years before finally going. Great player in his prime but literally no point in him coming back.

Isn't he first choice left back for a side who have pissed their league for years and reached the CL final recently? I'd have him back in a heartbeat. Get Park back too

edit - plus his final season was under Moyes, where everybody looked like they couldn't be arsed anyway

He was miserable positionally for his last few seasons at United, but yeah, I'd have him back too. Maybe on an 18 month contract or something like that. We're clearly weak at left back, and it's having an effect all over the pitch with Blind and Rojo having to deputise there, but I don't really want us to sign someone to replace Luke Shaw. Cover / competition is good enough, and Evra's best performances for us tended to come when he had to fight for a place in the team anyway. He's looked good for Juve when I've seen him, and he'd surely be a positive influence in the dressing room.

@ckny Park has retired, sadly.

Not any more, he's barely played this season. Even before Alex Sandro arrived it was partly down to the prolonged injury absence of Asamoah too, who's back after a couple of injury plagued seasons.

So, tomorrow, FA Cup against Reading. Anyone want to make score / line-up predictions?

Considering we face Hull three days later and then Liverpool the following weekend, I think we might see a few changes for the Reading game, and then the "regular" first teamers out for Hull to lads' Match Fitness up. However, I call Manchester United 2 - 1 Reading.

Would like to see something like:

   Martial Rashford Rooney

            Lingard
    Schweinsteiger Schneiderlin

Shaw Blind Bailly Darmian

             De Gea

Party up front, business at the back. Depay to come on at some point if we look comfortable, otherwise it'll be a strong bench with ordinary first-teamers ready to come on if needed. I personally think we're as likely to rest players against Hull as we are Reading, given it's the league cup and to be honest, I'm not sure Reading are any less of a threat than Hull. Also, the Liverpool game follows in less than a week.
