The old Man Utd Thread

I can see the point of stringently enforcing the high boot rule in the middle of the park, because the stakes don't justify the risk taken. Surely at the goalmouth though, there has to be some leeway; for instance, I bet he wouldn't give a penalty for a defender clearing a ball at head height. He is just trying to play the ball, using his skill and athleticism, and according to this ref at least he's not allowed to do that. I don't see how he's posing a danger to Valdez anyway, he pulls out once he has applied the finish.

When I first typed up this sequence I didn't think for a minute we'd win all these games. We still might not. But five wins in a row, eh. Just need the teams above us to start dropping points, at least City are playing Liverpool today so there's points to be gained there.

While we probably shouldn't be finding ourselves in that situation 85 minutes into a home game against a promoted side, at least you can say we always looked threatening and it eventually told. I think under Van Gaal or Moyes the players would've just slowly accepted it was three points dropped.

Mourinho took a centre-back off for a striker didn't he?  He's getting the Man Utd way.

It was still a coherent formation though, not just an attempt to fit as many strikers on the pitch as possible (although there were, er, three at the end there). Ended with something like a 3-5-2 which was completely appropriate given how deep Boro were sitting, and we still had width, still had players on the pitch to create chances as well as finish them. A much better "kitchen sink" approach than we've become used to, even under Sir Alex.

I've just watched the highlights on MOTD, and good grief!  Lee Mason should be very grateful to Martial and Pogba for making his moronic decision to disallow the Zlatan goal a non-story.  It's one of the very worst decisions I've ever seen.  No-one on either side thought it should be disallowed.  Arguably United should have had a penalty, not so much for the challenge on Rashford, but the one Liamness mentioned on Martial.  Martial had got his shot away, but the ball came back off the keeper, it's not as if the ball was dead.  It was also a really nasty tackle, with absolutely no attempt to play the ball, and could have injured Martial.

edit - Usain Bolt called in to a United phone-in show about the match!
