The old Man Utd Thread

Rooney's having a great game. In this role slightly in the periphery where he can find pockets of spaces, but not pretending to be a central midfielder, he's undeniably effective. It's a bit-part squad role and I'm not sure he'll be at the club that much longer given this, but his career at the club has been winding down for a while, and at least now it is not doing so ingloriously.

Fucking insane how we have a 35 year old leading the line, playing 90 minutes every game while looking as lithe and powerful as anyone on the pitch. It's incredible. He'll presumably need a rest at some point, but who do you replace him with? His link up play is so good, we'd need to change our approach pretty drastically with anyone else.

Yeah, that was a lovely goal. Quite direct in a way, with a couple of long passes, but executed with such skill, precision, and game awareness that it stands up to comparison with the most intricate of Iniesta-instigated interpassing. You've got to respect that alliteration.

I was watching the match at my parents' house, with my two brothers. A takeaway arrived halfway through the first half, with the intention of everyone eating at the dinner table, so we took the risky option of pausing the football to eat. After half an hour of us making sure we avoided checking the score, talking about how we were avoiding the score, and periodically intercepting children who wanted to watch TV, and just as we had cleared the table and were heading back to resume watching, my Dad pulled out his phone and announced to the room, "oh, still 1-0 then." I would congratulate him on an expert bit of trolling, but he was completely oblivious. Dadskillz.

Just seen Ravel Morrison (as opposed to Rowan Morrison...) at the Trafford 5 a-side sports centre, not on a pitch (que obvious 'we should have asked him to join in' joke) but in the doorway of the sit down bar area. Probably said 'look, there's Ravel Morrison!' a bit too loud but he looked very cheerful about being spotted. He has a distinctive easily recognisable face even from the side. He was wearing a brown-green coat and had a large hand bag with him.

I wasn't surprised to see the headline of 40mil for a player i haven't heard of.

See also Martial.

Money is just crazy these days but I read earlier they made over 150mil on Pogba shirt sales in a few week so 40mil doesnt seem that much for a player.

We have been linked with him for the past few windows, very nearly signed him. http://www.gazettelive.co.uk/sport/football/transfer-news/victor-lindelof-how-manchester-united-12346508

There's no way they've made even close to that amount. I'm sure clubs only receive 10%-15% of shirt sales,  plus printing fees. The Pogba transfer might help them negotiate a better kit deal down the line but it won't have made them much money from shirt sales.

€40m for a player Benfica paid €50,000 for. Not a bad bit of business for them.

Talk that Schneiderlin and Memphis will be off to Everton too in January. Memphis I couldn't care less about but Schneiderlin will be a shame, he's certainly more valuable to us than Fellaini and Schweinsteiger are. The number 7 shirt has been cursed since Ronaldo left.

I don't understand what has went wrong for Memphis. Always had potential, starred for Netherlands in the World Cup, just didn't make it at Utd. I think he'll go and tear shit up wherever he goes, but that will be down to getting game time. He never really had a decent run of games for us.

Schneiderlin hasn't really done it for me either, he's been serviceable just not great. He would be good to rotate in to the midfield 3, Pogba, Herrera and Carrick are easily our best in there, but they're not going to play every game. He's definitely infinitely more preferable than that bushy haired eejit though, but is that enough? Does he want a bit part role?

In other news, a friend on Facebook shared this petition to bring Berbatov back...It has 1 supporter (I assume the creator). I mean, I'd have him back!

He started the first 13 of the first 14 games of last season. True, not every new signing will hit the ground running but he showed nothing in those games to suggest he was worth the hype.

Players aren't given time to settle in though.  13 games isn't a huge number for a guy who was moving from the Dutch league to the Premier League.  He is obviously a talented player - didn't he score about 25 goals in his last season at PSV?  So he is capable of producing end product.  I think we expected a bit much of him right from the word go.  He did have some good games last season, mainly in Europe.  I remember him scoring two excellent goals against Club Brugge.

The problem with him seems to be twofold - firstly, the step up has exposed some problems in his decision making.  That's hardly unusual in a young player though, is it?  He's still only 22, younger than Jesse Lingard.  The other problem with him is that he seems to be a bit of a flat-track bully.  He looks great against lesser opposition, but seems unable to make telling contributions against decent teams.  If you ask me, he's still learning and could still be a very good player if he figures out how to use his talents effectively.  He's at the wrong club to do that though, as the competition for places in those attacking positions at United is particularly fierce.  Is he going to muscle his way ahead of Martial, Rashford, Mata, Mhkytarian, Lingard, and Rooney?  He needs an extended run in the first team, but does he merit it above all those other players?  He needs a move.  If he gets the right one, I expect and hope he will still show that he's a very good player.

I get the impression in 2/3 seasons time we'll be saying "it's such a shame he didn't get given longer to display his true potential."

I agree wholeheartedly that he should not remain with us and he should be seeking a move elsewhere in the Prem where he'll be given a game week in, week out. I suspect we'll see plenty more of Memphis.. just not for Utd.

Disappointed Schneiderlin seem to be leaving, he was brilliant at Southampton but hasn't been given much of a chance for us, particularly considering how thin we are in midfield. I think there will be a squabble over his signature, I'm sure plenty of teams will be interested. As for Depay, I think he will struggle at Everton to be honest. I imagine he will be competing for a place with Barkley, who is also frustrating to watch but definitely has more of an end product right now.

I think Memphis' problem is to do with the fact he seemed more interested in finding the most stupid hat in the world, and fucking about doing anything other than knuckling down and focusing on football.

This.

Ruud van Nistelrooy he isn't. Definitely falls into the Mateja Kezman category of PSV players trying their hand in the Premiership.

Schneiderlin not working out is a bit of a surprise, but I read that his distribution isn't up to scratch, which I find surprising considering we have Fellaini in the squad.

Never, ever seen Lindelof play. I did read a description likening him to a less erratic David Luiz.
