The old Man Utd Thread

He picks on his own players and criticises them in the media where the old Mourinho was a fanatical loyalist who earned his players' unquestioning commitment by always standing by them in public. He has also barely been seen on the training pitch at United, to the dismay and surprise of players who'd heard all the stories about this charismatic hands-on coach who got right into the heads of his players: instead what they've got on their hands is a brooding and peripheral figure on the sidelines who's made no effort to establish personal relationships with any of them.

LVG tried to throw a protective arm over the players when they were underperforming and it still didn't stop some of those overpaid fannies leaking stories to the press or digging him out after he'd been sacked. LVG was never the long-term answer, but Jose needs to be able to build his own team.

Jose was pretty much throwing Shaw and/or Smalling under the bus in the post-match interview, which certainly lends support to the entitled culture that's been allowed to pervade the club with some of these players thinking they've 'made it' and not putting in the required effort in a match. The lack of application when we go a goal down is infuriating. These players need rooting out and moving on. No exceptions. Looking at the stats recently, we won 12 times after recovering from losing positions under Fergie in his last season. We've only replicated that feat 11 times in 3 years since.

Our problems go way beyond what we see on the pitch every weekend and a cull is needed, since some of these players are coasting by on 'playing for Man Utd' and not putting in the required effort. As much as Fellaini and Young are dug out by our fans, the reason they play is they follow instructions to the letter and whilst they aren't the most gifted footballers, Jose prefers players who carries out his instructions and put in maximum effort.

Mata booked for going to the fans to celebrate, what nonsense. Such a clever pullback from Herrera.

Carrick - Herrera - Pogba is the most balanced midfield Mourinho's named yet, and it shows. Telling that the latter two, free to go forward, combined for the goal. If Carrick is the solution though, it's a solution that Mourinho seemed blind to until recently, or had a good reason to not consider. How often can he play 90 minutes?

Only got around to looking at this thread now, but Jones and Rojo as a centre back partnership is probably the worst we could possibly have. Both are liable for extreme fuck ups at any moment. Why Jones just capitulated as Giroud scored, I still don't know. They were just lucky the rest of the team help off Arsenal immaculately for the majority of the game.

It depends on the players' attitude really. The lack of effort in the last Europa match was shocking. If we turn up like that again, we'll get turned over.

The most irritating thing is that this competition is probably our best chance of getting a Champions League spot.

That's an incredibly slow attack, Mkhitaryan aside. I guess we have Lingard, Rashford and Herrera on the bench if we want to up the tempo.

Carrick's selection is interesting - he looked like he was struggling a little towards the end of the Arsenal game. If Mourinho feels he has to start regardless, in what really is a must win game, you wonder why he's been on the bench (if that) for most of this season.
