Rooney played pretty well, didn't he? I don't understand some of the criticism he gets.

Apart from the goal, (which was a lucky opportune moment with a smart finish), no he didn't. He had a poor first touch, took too long to bring the ball under control, combined with his deteriorating physical condition and a tendency to drop very deep blunted our attack. Passing was also predictably always out wide to the right. He wasn't 'terrible', but in my opinion every other outfield player outperformed him.

Can you explain why you thought he played well?

deep lying!? no. carrick or schiderlin are the deeplying, pogba is box to box, or pushes on, he dont sit!, you can have two midifeld players where only one is the sitter! :P

Not in this, or any formation that anyone else has come up with. Playing with a #10 and 2 wingers means there is no room for him to push on. The only solution is for Pogba to be the #10, which probably isn't the worst idea in the world, but means he's not one of the 2 central midfielders people have been saying he should be.

I agree with most, if not all of this but for all his faults in that game he was involved in 4 of our best moves. The shot from a Valencia cut back, the dive, the one on one from a Zlatan back heel and his goal.

So yeah his general play was average but you can't just ignore the good.

If Pogba does start on Friday it'll be for Herrera or Felliani I think. Even though I don't agree with it going forward.

The only problem with that, is that Jose himself has stated that he doesn't see Rooney "as a 6, or even has a 8".

Otherwise I'd expect something like that to happen actually.

tbh, i do wish we had actually have gotten rid of rooney two seasons ago! he just isnt an out and out anything really, hes good in a few positions, but there are better players in those positions at the club!

just a nice injury to keep him out would be great lol...or ya know, for him to just go to mls or china...

yes it mnight be harsh, and he has been a great player for us, but he isnt now, saying that, i do think he could forge out a scholes type role if played alongside schniderlin..,if he was allowed to, which would then let pogba play in front, but rooney could go furtther forward when needed, sadley we probly wont see that...:/

i mean zlatan looks in better phsyical condition than rooney, and hes 35 in a couple months!

@JimmytheMookwhat Trigg said, basically. He's not going to rampage around playing the game on his own like he used to, but he was generally effective. The understanding with Zlatan looked quite good, apart from a couple of times when they both dropped deep. His positional and tactical play was generally okay, he's improving a lot in this area, but it gets overlooked because we expect a different kind of game from Rooney. He's actually an intelligent footballer. I'm talking about footballing intelligence rather than general intelligence, before I get ridiculed! :D

Also, he took his goal very well. It wasn't an easy chance.

Regarding Pogba, I'd play him and Rooney in midfield with a third player sitting. Pogba would naturally be the one of the three most likely to carry the ball forward, and Rooney's passing, as well as his finishing when he got into the box, would be handy. I reckon Schneiderlin would be the third, but Mourinho doesn't seem to rate him very highly.

I'm surprised to see Herrera starting the first game. He seems too small and lightweight to be a Mourinho midfielder. It's a pleasant surprise to see him doing well in a deep role too.

I wouldn't play Fellaini as a deep midfielder. He's proved before that he's not mobile enough, and he can't tackle without committing clumsy fouls. Also, when Mourinho inevitably starts annoying referees, Fellaini will start getting sent off pretty regularly, I think.

I think Rooney in midfield is pointless if I'm honest for the simple fact I think our actual midfielders are better in that role. So I can't help but think that when he's in midfield he's playing because of his name. I'm happy for him to be a number 10 but then we have the Pogba issue.

It'll be one of Jose's biggest challenges this season I think, what to do with Wayne Rooney.

I'm with you though, I think for now we'll likely see Rooney, Pogba and one other in midfield.

Well, he was playing in the 10 position, you would expect that he would at least be involved in a portion of our attacking moves. That doesn't mean he is the best candidate in the squad to play that role.

If Mourinho insists on playing 4231 then I would try Mkhitaryan, Zlatan, Mata or even Pogba there before Rooney.

Yeah Rooney in midfield is madness, thankfully Mourinho isn't that crazy. Shame it's come to this, Fergie laid the foundations for easing him out of the club, Moyes and Woodward complicated everything with that ridiculous contract.

Rooney is the capt, he's going nowhere. Mourinho will sort him out.

For now yes. But if Rooney plays like he did last season under LVG then I'm almost certain Jose will drop him.

Rooney is one of Jose's biggest challenges this year I think. He either needs to get him performing or drop him.

Very early in the match, of course, but I like how we look so far. We're suddenly a physically very big team, and with Pogba and Zlatan, and Luke Shaw back, we seem to have quality players all over the pitch.

Pogba looks keen to make a good impression, Valancia looks bang in form, and the team look focussed. It's fun watching United again. :)
