The old Man Utd Thread

Giggs is leaving United, ending his 29 (!) year association with the club. Among other things, he said this in a statement:

Quote

I’ve been extremely fortunate in having two great managerial mentors; first in Sir Alex, who I’ve spent the majority of my life working with and learning from and who I believe will remain as football’s greatest-ever manager and in more recent times, Louis van Gaal, whose CV speaks for itself. The knowledge I have gleaned from them has been invaluable.

Completely avoids mentioning the man who actually gave him his start in management, amazing! Wonder what he'll do now. I hope he actually goes into management, instead of getting paid to complain about our current side.

I think that would be a strange move. I understand he's unlikely to be Mourinho's first choice, but if Mkhitaryan gets injured, who is going to play on the right? Also leaves us with just Lingard as a specialist central attacking midfielder.

I think Fellaini, Young, and Jones are definitely going to be shown the door. I honestly would like to see Rooney moved on too, I don't think he has a future at the top level of football, either as a forward or a midfielder. Would be a ballsy move though.

Lingard, Januzaj, Valencia and Young are all capable out on the right, and Mkhitaryan can play behind the striker in the role should Mata leave.

I really like Mata as a player, I find it really odd that Mata is the first player out the door (if it happens) when we've got some far more deserving candidates in the squad. But if Mourinho really doesn't want him then thats fine by me.

I don't like Young on the right in attack, or Valencia in attack full stop. I don't think we can count on Januzaj remaining at the club next season, or contributing much if he does. Lingard I will give you, but then that's two players covering for two positions, which isn't really cover at all.

But you can't have a player for every situation, there's only so many minutes to be played.

Rooney and Herrera can play in the more advanced midfield role should the need arise. Fellaini too if he stays. Rashford, a player that can play wide as he did in reserve/youth team. Depay is still there at the moment too, played on the right at times last season.

I'm still not ready to give up on Januzaj either, his debut season showed what he's capable of. Hopefully he can find that form again and hopefully be given a chance to do so. All this might change come the end of August when the final squad will be decided.

Anyway, Jose press conference to start 11am on MUTV.

Mourhino starting to boil piss already!

what? he's gone in there and done the transfer business to a standard you've not managed in a while - early, decisive, pretty decent value, and more to come. I think hes off to a great start.

So Jose saying he is looking 4 players with one more to find. (Obviously Bailly, Ibra and Mkhitarian) Do you think the last one will be Pogba? Do we think this is enough? I personally believe we would have a very good squad with these additions. Our most important addition is that of a new tactical outlook with Jose. I already thought the squad was at least comparable with the rest of the teams in the Premier League. These additions should prove invaluable.

I'll be extremely surprised if Pogba comes. The other 3 players that have come should improve us though. Hopefully he can get the best out of Herrera and Schneiderlin, something which LVG failed miserably at.

Was good to hear that Jose doesn't see Rooney as a number 6 or a number 8 too. The thought of Rooney in midfield full time scared me.

Guess some will leave too, which might mean more transfer deals incoming.

Mkhitaryan should be a good signing if he can settle in Manchester and fit into Mourinho's tactics.

He looked by a good distance the most effective and talented of the Shakhtar side with Fernandinho, Willian, Douglas Costa, Alex Texeira etc.. and the first three showed they could make the step up from second to first tier league well enough and do a good job, though Fernandinho and Willian have had their ups and downs in England.

Costa, the least effective looking a few years back is probably the highest rated now at Bayern.Mhkitaryan was quite a bit better than him last season for Dortmund though, and showed strong character to turn things around last season, becoming one of the best in the league after a disastrous second season under Klopp.

For an AM, he's got a modern, hard working and versatile style-which should suit the way Mourinho likes his attacking players-more of an unflashy busy all-rounder than a really creative passer and shooter.Should do well in a typical Mourinho setup, but the worry for fans would be he's already shown if things don't fit he can really struggle, and his stay at Dortmund could be interpreted as a player that takes a long time to settle.

I think thats the most worrying thing about him. No doubt he's a technically able footballer but moving to another league he might struggle, again. He really need to hit the ground running and that means the team and Jose does too.
