The old Man Utd Thread

Surely Mourinho must be pretty unhappy that his agent / lawyer / whoever didn't ensure these rights lapsed when his Chelsea employment ended? Clearly they're worthless to Chelsea now, and regardless of what Mourinho was doing next he would want to be able to make money from his own image rights.

It's extremely impressive how badly those in charge at Utd have handled this transition, in pretty much all respects. Woodward seems to prove himself endlessly incompetent season after season and just keeps on trucking.

Woodward is exceptional at signing global partnerships with Taiwanese gambling companies though. Lining the Glazer's pockets, what a guy.

Not that I doubt for one second that the deal won't get done, but I'll wait for it to be on manutd.com first.

Its finally official.  Be interesting to see who his first signing will be?

Personally, i think he will win us a few trophies and do well.  I would like Giggs to stay and in 5 years take over from Jose.  He would have worked with Ferguson, Van Gaal and now Mourinho,  You cant get much better in the game to learn off imho.

That's not how the trademark works. Chelsea have only trademarked his name and signature against specific items. They could make a banner image with his name if they wanted. Besides, I would assume Utd will throw money at Chelsea to make that issue go away. (Madrid and Inter had to have had some way around it)

Speaking of throwing money at it, who do we think he will bring in? There's a lot of talk about a CB, CM, RW and CF...Varane, Pogba, Ronaldo and Ibra? ;) Could get them for what? Less than £200m

Depay and Herrera are the interesting ones for me. If they're judged to be good enough to be regularly first 11 then there's a fairly complete squad there, injuries apart.

I also think he'll make Mata a central part, just because everyone says he'll get rid of him.

De Gea

Fosu-Mensah - Smalling - Varane - Shaw

Schneiderlin - Rooney

Memphis - Mata - Martial

ibrahimovic

Rashford, Borthwick-Jackson, Valencia, Herrera, Blind, Lingard as back ups.

Presuming Memphis remember how to play football again under Mourinho, and Rooney's CM partner will probably be a new signing. But to me that looks a formidable first choice XI. Ibra will have 2 seasons tops so Rashford will still get plenty of game time and experience. Despite Mourinho's last few months at Chelsea it still feels like we're back in safe, winning hands. Nail us on for CL winners 2018!

Fosu-Mensah is a few years away from being a starter in our team. He is big and powerful, with good intentions, but he is still extremely clumsy on the ball and positioning leaves a lot to be desired.

But I do agree, on paper, with a couple of signings, I don't see why the team would be struggling to compete for the title. (This is also on the presumption that Memphis wises up and starts to play some football and Martial continues his great form.)

I'll be very interested to see how Mourinho comes back from what was arguably his first real failure. I wonder if his approach might be slightly different. I think part of what made his impact so astonishing at the clubs he's managed since Porto, was that he went into the job with all the swagger and confidence of someone who has only known success. I don't know if he can do that this time (he's a massive egotist so he'll probably do it anyway).

I also can't see him liking Mata any more than he did at Chelsea. Mata is a very talented player, but he's also very frustrating to watch. At Chelsea he used to slow down the pace of the game so much, taking five touches where one would do. If Mourinho has any interest in bringing exciting direct football to Man United I can't see Mata fitting into that.

He went a bit bonkers at the end there with Chelsea didn't he? Doing some strange things. If it doesn't go well at first, how long until the fans call for his head? Long long are you willing to give him? He's obviously a very good manger but so was van gaal.

As with most things in football, Mourinho has a reputation that will stick with him (boring, overly defensive) but the statistics over the last few years don't bear that out: https://www.theguardian.com/football/blog/2016/may/22/jose-mourinho-manchester-united-old-trafford

The thing about being a nasty ego-maniacal cunt will forever remain true though.

Exactly the kind of signing we need right now. And not just for his goals. We need his swagger. His unbelievable self centred egotism. His confidence. He will walk into that dressing room and pull everybody else up with him. Also, the fact that he's 34 means he won't stifle the progression of Martial and Rashford.

He's got that Cantona factor about him. His presence, arrogance and leadership are qualities we've been seriously lacking since Ronaldo, Vidic, Rio, Evra et al all left.

Never heard of him. And for £31m I would expect to have at least heard who a player is.

Edit: just googled him: quick, physical young centre-back. Just the type of player we need, although he's from the Ivory Coast so he'll miss a good chunk of every other season to go off and play in the ACON
