The rumour on Twitter (I know!) is that Mendes has leaked the news, not United.

You all like attritional backs against the wall football played by thirtysomethings right? Where did Chelsea finish this season again?

It's a bit of a strange appointment because United have clearly passed on Mourinho once before, and it's not as if he's the only manager out there. Not a particularly brave or coherent choice. Having said that I expect him to do well, at least in the short term. Van Gaal's United was shockingly short on creativity in the final third, a problem he didn't seem to recognise or know how to solve, and that's primarily why he's gone I feel. Mourinho has produced teams that play efficient and attractive attacking football, despite some people with selective memories of his previous teams claiming otherwise.

About the long term though, the best thing about Van Gaal's management was how he was simultaneously ruthless in clearing out dead wood, and great at blooding young players. Mourinho isn't exactly known for this. There's talk about us nicking Atletico Madrid's director of football, so constructing the squad may primarily be someone else's responsibility, which I would welcome. Don't want to see talents like Rashford, Lingard or Fosu-Mensah underutilised, or stalwarts like Rooney or Carrick continue to be relied upon more than they should be.

Rooney obviously has the qualities to play in midfield, but it's a role he'll have to learn. Made some excellent defensive and attacking contributions yesterday, but is not so good at the less eye catching stuff like positioning and short passing. I'm worried about potential parallels with a certain other scouser, who was the talisman for their team and so could not be dropped, but was instead moved deeper where he was moderately effective, but eventually became a liability.

Going with Mourinho is like making a deal with the devil. You know the football will be cynical, you know he'll be banned from the touchline at least once per season for assaulting someone and you know Phil Jones will now be given licence to kill an opponent (or maybe a team mate or club doctor).

Ultimately a fair trade for winning the title. It's a world away from the ideology behind the appointment of Moyes but I don't think this board is competent enough to find the man to make that work.

I would have liked a third LvG season. He was starting to get something going toward the end of this season. Yes he may have stumbled upon Rashford but how many managers would have even given him a chance? I doubt even Sir Alex would have. The easy thing to do would have been to throw Memphis up front and start Pereira who was on the bench. Naturally, we're all worried Mourinho will cast Rashford, Fosu-Mensah, Lingard, Borthwick-Jackson et al back in the reserves.

Big cheers from the fans when LVG lifted the trophy.

Plenty off boos from our area when he came out to collect the cup though. Doubt that came across on TV. The United end was strangely subdued for long periods, which was in stark contrast to the Palace one.

Unsurprisingly though, our end went absolutely mental when Jesse scored.

At fucking last. It's only taken them all season to listen to me.

Anyway, Mourinho then? Can't say it's who I would have chosen as he seems like just another stop gap manager who won't build for the future. I will give him the benefit of the doubt though and support him as much as possible. He's got to be better than Moyes and LvG anyway.

Has it actually been confirmed? I can't see anything on the club website and the BBC article doesn't seem to have anything concrete, they'e just jumped to conclusions. The way this this has all been reported on, especially by the the BBC, is shocking.

Edit: He's still manager according to the club site! http://www.manutd.com/en/Players-And-Staff/Managers/Louis-van-Gaal.aspx

Well, there's no statement from the club in there and nothing to say it's official, all they seem to be going off is whatever Mendes has leaked and the fact that LVG and the LMA guy turned up this morning for a meeting. Now it's very probable that he has been sacked but they've been running this story since an hour after the cup final finished with no hard facts. Just all seems a bit off to me. I'm not a big fan of LVG's tactics but the guy deserves better than this.

still came as a shock though...

To who? The only shocking thing is how long it's taken.

As much of a legend as he is at the club, I think Giggs would ruin us more. I'm pretty sure he's behind, or takes part in those leaks that come out (its amazing how its only the senior players/people who get shown in a good light in them, Rooney, Carrick, Giggs etc). We need to get away from the old boys club, not embracing it. Plus Giggs is a cunt, but I love him for what he did for us.

He should head off and prove himself elsewhere, he's been assistant manager to two failed regimes. As much as you have to blame the manager, his input was still there.

Seems like a strange negotiating tactic... Firing the original manager and then negotiating terms with the his successor... Doesn't give much of a Plan B if it fails and I'm sure Morinho is gettin a lot more out of it.

In "you couldn't make it up" news, it seems that part of the problem is that Chelsea own Mourinho's name, plus different watch and car sponsorships.

Look forward to seeing Mose Jourinho signing for you soon.

Surely Mourinho must be pretty unhappy that his agent / lawyer / whoever didn't ensure these rights lapsed when his Chelsea employment ended? Clearly they're worthless to Chelsea now, and regardless of what Mourinho was doing next he would want to be able to make money from his own image rights.

It's extremely impressive how badly those in charge at Utd have handled this transition, in pretty much all respects. Woodward seems to prove himself endlessly incompetent season after season and just keeps on trucking.
