The old Man Utd Thread

Honestly, having seen them both at their peak, I think De Gea is better than Schmeichal. He might be the best shot-stopper I've ever seen. His reflexes are unreal.

If we'd have scraped into fourth and won the FA Cup, I might have been in favour of giving LVG another year, largely for his shex maschocism quotes, and my dislike of Mourinho. However we bottled fourth, and if this report is true and the choice is to have either LVG or DDG at the club next season, well that's an easy choice. I'd do a deal with the devil to keep De Gea, never mind Mourinho.

Tough call. Different qualities to both. De Gea's reflexes and agility are ridiculous. Schmeichel obviously had the huge presence and would scare the shit out of his own defenders and opposition players. Better distribution too. Can't have this conversation without giving Van see Sar a mention either. Unbelievable goalkeeper, if only we'd signed him sooner, he wasted a few years of his career at Fulham.

It's reasonable to assume that De Gea will pick a lot more of that up as he ages. He's much younger than Schmeichel at his peak and those are the sorts of things that come with age more than experience (which De Gea has probably got more of at the same age, just about).

Looking from outside, it feels less about who is the better keeper, but their influence on the results. It seems that De Gea is more pivotal in getting you points you wouldn't normally have got with the team you have now. He makes so many match-winning saves, it's unreal.

Schmeical was part of, frankly, a much better team than De Gea is now. He saved you points obviously but you would already be in winning positions more than now.

Someone earlier (feltmonkey?) said that without De Gea, you'd be much closer to Liverpool's position in the league and that's spot on. To me, he is critical to you just staying where you are in the league, let alone pushing for the title next season.

Keeping De Gea at the club for next season is the biggest signing we can make. We can add another player here or there, hope Martial and Rashford continue some good form, Shaw come back so we can get rid of Rojo and we might do ok.

Actually, so long as Shaw comes back without losing that yard of pace and attacking sensibilities, we will do well. We looked really good with him marauding down the left flank at the start of the season.

By my reckoning we need a CB to fill in alongside Smalling, Blind has been good-ish, but he's just no CB. Shaw and Darmian, who looked good in the early part of the season then didn't get a look in for some reason, in full back. Blind, Carrick, Schweinsteiger, Rooney, Schneiderlin to rotate the 2 holding midfield roles. Mata/Herrera to rotate the #10 role. Martial being Martial. I know Lingard and Rashford have done well this season, but I'd like to see a resurgent Memphis and a top class striker bought, with them 2 guys as very capable backups.

On paper, that seems like it should be a title challenging team. When you break it down like that, LVG really fucked up!

I think that's an optimistic appraisal of the squad.  Darmien has been a bit disappointing after a decent start.  In fact, I'd say Valencia is the best right back at the club, particularly based on his form since returning from injury.  Rojo is terrible.  Smalling is excellent.  Shaw was fantastic until he got injured, so hopefully he will be a big player for us next season.  Forsu-Mensa and Borthwick-Jackson could potentially be very important players for us in the future, so they're worth giving more first-team experience.  Apparently Phil Jones is still at the club.  Overall, the squad is still a bit thin defensively, and injuries have really hurt us there this season.

The midfield still looks weak - Schweinsteiger should probably be moved on, and I'd sell Herrera too.  I quite like him as a player, but he's not top class.  He gives the ball away an awful lot, and makes some silly decisions.  He also cheats like mad, but in a completely ineffective way.  He puts in bad tackles then feigns injury a lot.  Arguably Schneiderlin hasn't been good enough either.  He's let us down quite a lot, doesn't defend or win the ball as much as you'd like, and offers nothing going forward.  Blind I would keep at centre back, purely because he's (oddly) less negative there.  In midfield he's the king of the sideways pass.  Rooney looks like he might have a future in there, with his range of passing, but he needs someone good alongside him.  Carrick remains our best holding midfielder from a defensive point of view, and he's probably leaving.  Fellaini is an enigma.  Our worst player, but so much more effective than many of those around him.  If referees ever get wise to how many times he should be sent off every single game, he's in trouble.

Regarding the wings and attacking midfield positions, Martial is already world-class in my opinion.  Depay needs more time, but he already looks like he's going backwards and needs either a change of manager or a move.  He does his tricks against very weak opposition, but against anyone good he just makes mistake after mistake.  It's difficult to tell whether he has too little confidence or too much, but the problem seems to be mental.  Lingard is a solid squad player.  He does a lot of good, often unsung, things.  He makes the right run, plays the right pass, does his defensive work well.  What he doesn't do is provide the bit of magic you need in those positions, and his finishing is frequently dreadful.  Mata is class.  No pace, no strength, can't defend, but so effective in the final third.  Mourinho will sell him.

Up front, we only have Rashford, for some reason.  Martial can play there, of course, but he's so good on the wing.  I'm not in favour of buying someone to replace Rashford, as I think he could be really special, and making him sit on the bench and watch someone like Ibrahimavic take his place would be a waste, and could possibly cause another Januzaj situation.  Speaking of which, we could do with him back.  What exactly has he done to LVG anyway?

I think we need another striker or two from a squad point of view, a really world class winger to play on the right, a defender or two, and a top holding midfielder.  The most important signing, as you say, chin, is keeping De Gea.  If we lose him we need to try to get Courtois (who looks set to leave Chelsea) but that's very unlikely, as he seems to want to leave England altogether.  Perhaps a new manager would be a decent signing.

Hmm, this is a bit early to be talking about this, probably.  We've not even been beaten 1-0 by Palace while having 70% possession but only 2 shots at goal, neither on target, in the FA Cup final yet!

llingard....lingartd who should have been on the pitch to start with...but...but does this mean we will be stuck with lvg...ya know, assuming we dont fuck it up....which is still likely!

I think if anything it might make it easier for him to go. He's talked about coming to an English club to win English competitions and he's done that.

De Gea was a giant. He deserves to be playing champions league football but I hope we can hold onto him.

Feels so good to have some silverware at the club again. Watching the players celebrate like that makes you realise how (relatively speaking) long it's been. Here's hoping it helps us build a winning mentality again.

Woo-hoo! I love the FA Cup. It's fantastic to finally win it again.

The winner was one of the great cup final goals, too.

I don't think it will save LVG though. Finishing fifth will had sealed his fate, this is just a nice way for him to sign off.

One last thing, on that evidence, I really don't understand why Wilf Zaha wasn't given a chance when he was at United. He was fantastic, and we couldn't cope with him.

Why is it that my first thought on us winning the FA Cup is one of worry rather than joy. Worry that van Gaal might be with us for another year. What has that idiot done to me?

yep, thats how i feel.

regarding zaha, i wondered too, but, even now, he has no end product at all, and i think that was why, yes hes quick, and can sometimes pull off some great dribbles. but, hes more inconsistant than nani was lol

About Zaha; he's obviously come on a lot, but I also think he needs space in front of him to do his thing, and he wouldn't necessarily get that with us. Also there were flashes of the poor decision making he showed for us this game, he hasn't totally shaken that.

Manchester United will appoint Jose Mourinho as their new manager, BBC Sport understands.

Mourinho has been out of work since he was sacked by Chelsea in December.

With United failing to qualify for the Champions League under Louis van Gaal, the Old Trafford hierarchy are thought to have decided a change is required.

It is understood a deal with Mourinho was agreed in principle before Saturday's FA Cup final victory against Crystal Palace.

The club plan to announce his arrival early next week after telling Van Gaal his reign has come to an end.

The Dutchman still has one season remaining on his three-year deal, but despite spending £250m on new players, his tenure has disappointed many fans, the club finishing fourth and then fifth in the Premier League.

Van Gaal's grip on his job has seemed increasingly fragile this season, with Mourinho known to covet the task of masterminding a revival at United three years after legendary former manager Sir Alex Ferguson stepped down.

There you go lads, sorted!
