The old Man Utd Thread

I do wonder what has happened to van Gaal. Last season he at least steadied the ship and got us back in the Champions League. He was confident and charming and took no shit from the press. He came across assured and it felt like he might just be able to push us on after the Moyes debacle. I never expected him to be a long term solution, but his 3 year contract seemed right.

Now, just looking at him sat there in the dugout after yet another hugely embarrassing loss, he looks like a lost child. No doubt he'll be meek and defeatist with the media in the post match interview. He really doesn't seem to know what the fuck is going on.

Yes, we're ravaged with injuries, but the squad just isn't strong enough. His tactics are suspect as fuck. And probably worst of all, he appears to be resigned to the fact he's a dead man walking.

What happened?

Anyway, there better be an announcement of his immediate departure by the morning. This can't carry on.

I can't say I'm that surprised really. Fucking dreadful and if the club had any decency, they'd refund the match-going fans the £71 it cost to watch that utter shit.

Obviously I hope both LVG and Woodward are removed from their position, but it won't happen. Even Giggs to a lesser extent, who apparently, believes the job to be his after LVG and is possibly just as culpable given that he has now provided assistant duties to two failed tenors.

Add that to the fact that with the exception of Shaw, De Gea and Martial, our team is bang average at best.

Oh well, in times like this, the Mickey Phelan scaring the shit of Fergie gif still raises a chuckle.

This is as bad as Moyes' season. I don't know where the team goes from here or whether we have a chance of truly challenging again for at least several years, but this can't go on.

God, remember that transfer window when Shaw, Herrera, Blind, Falcao and Di Maria were all signed AND Van Gaal had just taken Holland to 3rd place in the World Cup? So much optimism. Sadly, that article posted on the last page was spot on. Van Gaal has been a terrible judge of talent and done a terrible job of ensuring we have a rounded, deep squad. And now the results have gone down the drain. He's a dead man walking.

Just now, The Fox said:

I can't see Woodward sacking him just because he lost a first leg Europa League game away from home. You'll probably smash them at home. Plus you've got Arsenal next weekend and we're virtually guaranteed to stuff that one up somehow.

I don't think it's just because he's lost the first leg of a Europa tie.

LVG has been terrible both seasons, last season he got lucky - Spurs were pretty awful and came 5th so he just made Man U a little less awful than moyes but nothing less.

I dint see the game but the comments on here, BBC and various Man U supporting friends suggest it was awful - to the point you wonder if there is more to this than poor form as until Man U LVG was a shit hot manage and I was a bit gutted he didn't come to Spurs.

Maybe there is more to the rumours that the chosen one has done a deal with Inter and Man U are stuck with LVG who doesn't want to be there now?

I doubt it, a team that were smashed by Napoli 9-1 on aggregate some months ago, haven't played in two months until tonight and had only won once in their last ten games; this is worse than Olympiakos.

Even if we do progress, it won't change anything in the long-term. There needs to be change at the club. I still cannot believe that we have regressed that badly since last season.

What would be the final straw then? How many times do we have to be humiliated by supposedly lesser opposition? How many excuses do we need to hear from him?

His time has been up for a while anyway, but for some reason the club are hanging on. This last pathetic defeat is just another nail in the coffin, and even the staunchest United fans have had enough. He has to go.

It was a huge night for them and they played well. They were very well set up for making Man Utd look a lot worse than they were, a solid backline and some freedom and creativity in attacking midfield. As much as they made a mess of their games against Napoli, the fact they knocked out Southampton is more relevant as it's fairly hard to claim Man Utd are much better than Southampton.

The problem is that Man Utd aren't better than Southampton, not that they lost here.
