The old Man Utd Thread

It was realistically never going to happen. City have been planning this for years, appointing his BFF's. It's all very disappointing, I thought Pep was more of a romantic than this. Still, it's only for three years.

I think I'm most disappointed that United obviously haven't made any effort to get him and left City to it.

What worries me is what this will mean for our transfer plans. I know money talks the loudest, but surely having him as manager will attract some amazing players.

I just hope out managerial hierarchy realise it, and start putting plans in action to counter it. LvG has failed in his role, so we need a new manager, then the team needs a serious overhaul. I just want us to be able to compete.

Unfortunately I don't think the Glazers or Woodward are interested in football as long as the business keeps making money.

Says who? They are just covering their backs in saying they didn't want him as manager. Ferguson has already been quoted in his book in saying he directly approached Pep and told him to let us know if he was going anywhere. He didn't say out and joined Munich.

As for the money thing... well, yeah, of course. It's no surprise surely. It's been apparent from day one they see the club as a cash generator and nothing else. Woodwards qualifications are an investment banker that helped broker the deal that brought the Glazers in. He helped increase revenue and has been promoted beyoynd his capabilities. It wasn't just Fergie going that was the bad news, Gill going too compounded it.

Financially the club has never been richer. Football wise it's a joke from top to bottom with no forward planning at every level. It's all try and buy some global superstar and fuck the fact its a team game that needs balance.

I think there's a lot of truth in this, sadly. Financially, the club is in better shape than it has ever been, while on the football side things have gone to shit.

It's not just the first team - slumps can happen, and there's no magic formula for league success. More worrying are the problems on the youth side of things. We are way behind City and are relying on the novelty value of Ryan Giggs going to prospects homes to try and persuade them to sign for us rather than City. City's facilities are state of the art, while until recently we hadn't had a head of our academy for seven months. We need to fix that side of things, but instead we're getting mind-boggling sponsorship deals and signing overpriced marquee names who end up getting rightfully kept out the team by Ashley Young.

It sounds as though Mourinho has signed an agreement to take over in the summer, with that possibly being brought forward if Van Gaal is sacked before then. I feel like if we go back to playing that turgid, guileless "brand" of football, then you can't really ignore the world class coach who is available. He may have some flaws which have been particularly exposed recently, but at least this will have made him much more motivated to succeed at his next gig. My main worry is that if Guardiola and City continue to pull away, he would not be able to resist moaning about them constantly, instead of just focusing on how we can correct that situation. Also, poor Mata.

Next season you'll potentially have Klopp, Wenger, Mourinho, Guardiola and Pellegrini (I think he will be off to Chelsea) all managing English clubs, which is an incredible concentration of managerial talent.

We're already playing shit football most of the time so we may as well play it under a manager who will probably stand more chance of winning something, regardless of what happened at Chelsea. I just dread us being associated with his classless antics.

It'll all end in tears. Even as an Arsenal fan (and the innate dislike of Man United that naturally comes with that) I respect your club's standing as one of the world's great sporting institutions & Mourinho's classless bullshit would be ill-suited, I feel. I was hoping we'd seen the last of him in England but there's nowhere else for him to go really. I bet Pep can't wait!

I doubt that would appeal as for as much as people dislike him, he does tend to go where the challenges are. Bayern are almost a default league title each year and I don't think he'd go there just to try and win the CL.

My interest has been waning for a long time, and not simply because of the lack of silverware before the idiots jump in, but because of the way the club's focus has shifted from being a football club that could make money through being at the top of their game and some shrewd marketing, to a club that is more concerned with growing its revenue through shady deals built on the club's historic past.

Anyway, my point was, if Mourinho comes in, I'm done. Back to my beloved Rochdale, until the people in charge realise that it's not just a business. It's entertainment. We, the punters, pay for that and until it returns I'm out.

Martial is the real deal. That's his tenth goal this season, cool as you like dink with the goalkeeper right in his face, very impressive.

Shame about Darmien, looks like he may have dislocated his shoulder? We can't catch a break with the fullback positions. I have never heard of his replacement- not sure why Varela isn't on the bench.
