The old Man Utd Thread

I don't know who's clamouring, but he could do a job until the end of the season when we can replace him with a proper manager. The season is written off now as far as I'm concerned. No Champions League and I doubt we'll suddenly recover to take the Premiership title.

I don't expect there'd be many available managers who would be happy to come in for half a season. Saying that, Hiddink's done just that at Chelsea.

I'm not clamouring for Giggs, I guess I'm just hoping against hope that we can get Guardiola at the end of the season so we'd only need a stopgap until then. I can only imagine we're throwing the kitchen sink at him in a bid to stop him going to City. I also really don't want Mourinho anywhere near the club.

I also forgot that, as well as being two points better off at this stage, Moyes qualified for the knockout stages of the CL too. I recall us also having a good Xmas under Moyes? In which case LVG could slip even further behind his record in the coming week or two if he stays.

I liked this video

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HDAkmRkbVNI

examining the differences between Van Gaal's United and Guardiola's Barcelona in terms of asking the forward players to stay wide to allow the midfielders room to move into, but whereas with Van Gaal there seems to be a lack of movement and runs inside when United enter the final third, with Guardiola he only asks the forward to stick to the byline until the team is in the final third and then you're allowed freedom to move across the field and make runs. It runs counter to the disbelief Van Gaal could be telling his players to 'not be creative', but it must go against Martial's instinct to not make the run in the example shown in the Norwich game, and as Henry says even if you go against the manager's directions and score a goal he will sub you off for going against his grand plan.

It only just occurred to me Mourinho could be intended as an interim, and how humiliating it would be for him to steady the ship for Guardiola's arrival, with that being the only taste of the club he'll get, to mop up after Van Gaal and then ready it for a manager deemed classy enough to deserve it. I wonder if Mourinho would take that offer? The United fans could even hold up banners like Chelsea fans did to Benitez. Him taking over in that role, and then getting smashed by Chelsea in his first game would have been joyous.

mourinho would never sign on for six months knowing guardiola could be waiting in the wings.

The thing is, MU are in a situation where they could ship off VG, get an interim manager in, and lose Guardiola, and while waiting for choice A, lose the chance of getting Mourinho. so it's a tough one, because regardless of what happened at Chelsea, he's won loads, and when shit's going well, the players seem to love him, he COULD be just what our squad needs to seemingly enjoy their game.

i can see us getting spanked tomorrow

It's a delicate situation, certainly.

It's not quite as simple as "Guardiola brings beautiful football, Mourinho brings ugly football" but they have almost completely opposite philosophies. Mourinho is very wedded to counter-attacking football, to the extent that he apparently prefers his team's not to hold possession, as the team in possession is more likely to make a mistake which leads to a goal. Guardiola is a slightly more adventurous version of LVG. The footballing world is yet to see what would happen if he was in charge of a team that wasn't packed with geniuses and miles better than any other team in the league. There is no guarantee that he would make us into a decent team. At least his philosophy would be closer to what the players are used to doing for the last couple of years, whereas Mourinho would represent a complete about-face in style.

I don't think Mourinho would win anything with us. He'd have to tread water until the end of the season with a team that is not in his image at all, then the season after would be a first attempt at doing something, which would most likely be hampered by Mourinho's signings bedding in, which would lead us into Mourinho's Third Season, and we know what happens then.

So I definitely favour Guardiola, albeit with tempered expectations even if we do get him. I think he's already got an agreement with City in place, though.

Something needs to change though. We can't go on as we are, it's just dire at the moment, and has been for a long time. It's a shame, as I still quite like LVG as a man. I just don't like what he's doing to the team.

It was an entertaining game. Finishing let us down (although you could say the same for Chelsea). Rooney broke our own play up repeatedly but what else is new, everyone else was alright. Although it was disappointing to watch Martial holding the width out of the left with Darmien not really overlapping effectively. Borthwick-Jackson (going to need to come up with a nickname if he plays much more) was good when he came on too, made some good overlapping runs and put in a fantastic ball at the end. LVG in... for now.

Highlights were still Matic skying it and the Chelsea fans chanting "Attack!" when their team started passing it sideways though. I know, didn't think they were capable of wit either.

Looking at replays now, seems I gave too much credit for the result to the finishing, and too little to the goalkeeping. I remember De Gea made an incredible double save but Courtois' save against Herrera was just as good. They're probably two of the best goalkeepers in the world besides Neuer, and this probably mostly explains why an otherwise exciting game ended 0-0.

We appear to be playing a back three but with no wingbacks. With the ball, Schneiderlin is dropping in and the wide fullbacks are pushing up, so we can work the ball forwards. It's weird as fuck, seems to be making it hard for us to get out of our own half, and offering space out wide when we do lose the ball.

Fabianski (yes, the keeper) or Williams could've easily grabbed back two points at the end there. Why is this United team putting my heart in my mouth, when we're playing at home against relegation candidates with an interim manager?

I don't think today was an improvement over Chelsea. All the momentum from that game seemed to have completely disappeared for the first 45 minutes. In both games I felt we've made poor opposition look much better than they are.

Van Gaal has said he will have to show his fitness in the reserves before he will play in the first team. Understandable, as I don't believe he's played a full 90 minutes once this season. If he hadn't fobbed off the Belgian U21s, he would've at least got a start there. Hope he's on the bench against Sheffield United at least.

Memphis was good when coming on, positive at least. Great run to win the penalty. We were really awful before that. Amazing to see the sarcastic cheers when Memphis first did his "cut inside and shoot" thing, because no-one else was showing any intent.
