The old Man Utd Thread

One of my favourite things in modern football is when a Situation is developing, such as this one, and the official Twitter account carries on tweeting semi-regularly about something wholly unrelated. Eg. the U18 team as is happening at the moment. Just imagine how entertaining it is writing those tweets knowing they'll be viewed by millions.

It's like being the ultimate (and professional) troll.

I just can't fathom how anyone who has watched Mourinho this season would gladly hire him for their club, unless you're really desperate. I can't comprehend after this season that everyone has witnessed, how a club that has made two wrong managerial appointments would look at both Guardiola and Mourinho and choose the latter. I just don't even. Ketchup on lobster?

Whatever, i don't care. I do care, because it's so fucking stupid it's maddening. It's not a rumour that Guardiola wants to manage United, Graham Hunter is dead certain. I'm not even that sure Guardiola would be a success in terms of rejuvenating the playing style given he also is obsessed with possession as a means to control a game and if you have the ball it means the other team does not and thus cannot hurt you, as opposed to having the ball a lot to express yourself with it.

I just despise Mourinho, and his ultra tedious petty conspiracy bullshit doled out 3 times a week. I remember a comment in a comment section about the news Mourinho would return to Chelsea, that said something like 'I feel sorry for Oscar', and was always reminded of it when I watched Oscar play so aggressively, snapping at the heels of opposing players, because he can do that as much as play freely. Aside from a few man of the match games though, and Mourinho choosing him over Mata and being really cunty about it, he disappeared. I forgot he was ever so good. And then the last game against Sunderland a player has never looked so liberated from being under a dark cloud. I really think the reason Mourinho can't have longevity at a club whereas Wenger can is because Mourinho is so relentless at keeping his players on a tight leach, going as far to drill them into their shape at every possible scoreline that might occur during a game, and they follow him because he's leading them to glory. But they're naturally creative individuals, and he doesn't appreciate or encourage or nurture that in the way Wenger does. Mostly Wenger just says 'expressive yourself'. There might be a few lethargic performances where the team is just not 'there', but there is no complete mental collapse of what it means to be a football player.

I don't think angel was off about Mourinho hating Hazard, any praise that he's thrown Hazard's way seems to be grudgingly, compare how Mourinho praises his players to how Wenger does, with Wenger it's with a wide smile of adoration (I remember Cazorla's debut where he was asked post game and he puffed out his cheeks as though he was in love with the display of complete composure and control of a football, and despite the pressure heaped on managers for results, he's still an admirer of aesthetics), with Mourinho it's so calculating and aggressive, it's not as a fan of the game but as someone who can only see the numbers. Mourinho has said himself he appreciates and values an average player who gives his all more than a super talented one, he resents the creative one who coasts on his talent. Found the quote..

"I am not the kind of guy who makes life easy for the great players," he said. "This kind of player is the last I praise.

"You have to praise the guys who play to their limits, who give everything. They are not superstars; they are just good players trying to support their teams. Don't get me wrong, I still prefer the top players, the guys who win you matches and make the difference. But if they are 'great', they have to give more than the others. For me, to praise an ordinary player is easy. For me to praise a top player is not. When a player is different and has more potential than others, he has to use his talent in a good way."

"Joe Cole was one of the best talents in the Premier League, and in English football, but I made his life quite difficult," said Mourinho. "We transformed his game together because he accepted what I wanted – and we turned a No10, who would come up with two or three amazing actions, into an inside-winger, left or right, who was strong defensively. He was fantastic. I was so pleased with what we did with him.

"A creative player has to use his ability and, if he loses the ball trying to create or score a goal, no problem. If he's just having fun, though, and loses the ball in midfield and then doesn't defend, and the team concede, that's a problem. These guys have to go out there to produce, not have fun or look to humiliate an opponent, putting the ball through their legs. It's about being respectful and having objectives.

"We've had Joe, Robben and Duff, Cristiano Ronaldo, Angel di María and Mesut Ozil … with me [at Real Madrid], players like Eden Hazard will have freedom. The kid has a lot of talent, but it's about what he does next. He has to go from a great talent to great numbers: how many goals, how many assists, how many winning goals, how many goals in big matches. Football is about numbers in a very pragmatic way. I'm ready to help him, I'm ready to work with him. And he must be ready too."

He sounds more reasoned there admittedly..

I'd love for LVG to be given more time, from what I've read he's been doing quite a bit of good work behind the scenes and also with developing the youths. That should always be Man Utd's key long-term goal and I'm glad he's given that his attention despite trying to get the first team to deliver. The key questions, nonetheless, are whether the first team will begin delivering consistent performances and results soon, and if Giggsy will truly be ready to step-into the manager's role when LVG does leave. My gut feel is that Giggsy is best served working under another man for at least the next two seasons.

If it does come down to LVG leaving before his contract ends, I think both Guardiola and Mourinho are both very good options in their own right. Still, I honestly can't see either staying at Man Utd for long anyways. Guardiola's always been about challenges, and he'd leave no sooner we have a few titles under our belt. He'd bring a good amount of intensity and tactical variation that will improve our play. Mourinho's approach to the game is very similar to SAF (who has stifled a number of creative players too), and he might actually bring to the first team the winning mentality that has been lacking since SAF retired. My main worry about him though, is how divisive his personality has proven to be in recent years.

I think it's reasonable to say that Mourinho panicked at the start of this season, chose to over-react in exactly the wrong way and thanks to assets like Fabregas was never going to get control back. Equally, Real Madrid players deciding they want a new manager and rebelling isn't exactly without precedent.

Guardiola seems in no way like Ferguson. He clearly always admired Wenger, who was the closest he'd play regularly, but I don't think there is much evidence he ever stole tactical strategies. Mourinho is massively similar, he's just got a little bit obsessed with central midfield at the expense of the wingers that Ferguson counter-attacked with.

I honestly didn't realise Van Gaal's win stats were this bad:

Van Gaal has overseen four wins in the last 15 games amid growing criticism of the team’s style of play, and his win ratio – 50.7% – is currently below David Moyes’s 52.95% from his time at the club.

I liked the press conference. Politely and calmly told the press why there were all dicks, wished them a Merry Christmas, then strolled out.

I don't care for Mourinho, nor for sacking a manager after a few bad weeks, especially when this current rut of form was preceded by us sitting top of the league. If we don't give him until the end of the season at least I'll be disappointed.

The Sun's back page tomorrow is basically just a childish, personal attack on Van Gaal, framed as an "apology". Such wit. Byline says "by Apollo Gees", so they not even willing to stand by what they've printed. I know we shouldn't expect any better from these "journalists", but it seems low, even for them. It will be interesting to see how the players react against Stoke; with all the shit that's getting flung at the manager, I wouldn't be surprised to see them rally to him in a big way.

My take is, if the media doesn't create the drama, all of them will pretty much be out of a job tomorrow. It's unfortunate but rumours and stories are what readers love to indulge in, consciously or subconsciously. And that's where I have utmost respect for SAF (and now LVG) in the way they manage journalists - trust them like you would a thief, but give them enough to keep them off your backs.

So it's something like

De Gea Young Jones Smalling Blind Carrick Herrera Fellaini Mata Memphis Martial

Worried about that right hand side, but I guess Herrera will help out defensively. Probably the team I would've picked, except maybe I'd swap Schneiderlin for Fellaini. Van Gaal says Rooney is fit, he's been dropped for "tactical" reasons.

I'd say Louis will be out of a job very soon. The players he's brought in aren't up to the job, his tactics are terrible and he just can't get a grip on how football is played in our league. I just don't see any way back for him.

He pinpointed these games over the festive period to get things back on track, but if anything we've got worse.

I guess it's all about keeping possession as much as possible, but what are they actually supposed to do with it once they have it? They just look so uninspired and lifeless.

Yea but the midfield three really didn't keep hold of the ball well. It's was shambolic.

At this point in the season Moyes was two points better off and the team had scored many more goals. I think this is probably the nail in the coffin for LVG. I was excited to see what he'd do but he's had so much money and we're no better off than under Moyes and are arguably playing more boring football.

I'd rather write the season off and have Giggs as caretaker than rush Mourinho in, mind.

Do you putting Giggs in now is too early, I'd hate to see a club legend forced out of club because of a bad spell as manager. My other worry if I was a United fan would be not qualifying for the Champions League would probably stop Guardiola taking over when he has the option of a safe CL place each season at Manchester City.
