The old Man Utd Thread

Lovely goal from Lingard, but another blunt, overly-conservative performance. Four shots on goal all match. It's all very well being patient, but you have to at least try to break these teams down. We passed sideways and backwards and in the end relied on a poor defensive header (we hadn't even got enough players in the box to mean it was made under pressure) and a great finish. We didn't create anything ourselves. The second goal was down to WBA chasing the game and wouldn't have happened if we hadn't got the first.

Even then Berahino missed a simple chance that would have allowed West Brom to revert to their defensive style and most likely hold on for the draw. Let's face it, we were lucky to win, and we're certainly dull to watch.

The Carrick / Schweinsteiger axis has its place then. With Blind coming back into the side, the emphasis was clearly on passing ability from deep. Makes sense against a side that will try to sit back and frustrate. Doesn't make so much sense against Ozil, Ramsey and Walcott.

Depay is definitely on the naughty step then. Lingard was much more effective, in the same position no less. Rooney looked alright too, but really in that second-striker position when the rest of the team is doing well, he doesn't have to do a whole lot. Would rather we played a real playmaker there, or switch to a 4-3-3 with Herrera so we have more control in midfield. He should be rotating with Martial for the strikers position, or playing on the left (though this would make our attack quite narrow if Mata was on the other side too).

  • 2 weeks later...

Louis van Gaal tells #MUTV Carrick, Martial, Fellaini and Valencia are all injured, while Rooney is ill. All will miss Watford.

The boss hopes Martial and Rooney could return against PSV. Valencia has had an operation and requires a long-term recovery. #MUTV

Terrific

I like the man, and it's obvious that LvG has got the team playing this way to try and be secure as possible while hopefully nicking a goal, but shit, is it boring. I think I enjoy how we play less than when Moyes was in charge. Ok, maybe not that bad, but considering the players we have, this cagey, creatively redundant shite is fucking awful. It might seem a bit rich, but I wish we had a manager that had some flair. Some balls. Some sense of challenge. Not the boring, yet tactically sound shit we've got.

And Rooney is done. We should be trying to get as much money for him as we can before other teams cotton on.

Everyone has cottened on bar LVG. Pereira or Mata in instead of Rooney last night and things might have been different. Herrera needs to come and lay claim to the #10 role, get Rooney the fuck out and stop always trying to rely on microphone head. It is depressing. Can't see anything but Europa League football now. Thursday nights are a terrible night to watch football.

I think whoever we have upfront is going to struggle to score with this setup. I do think LVG has looked at the rest of the Premier League and decided this was the best way to set us up with our current personnel.

I don't disagree with Scholes's opinion that we are a defensive team now, which is boring as arseholes to watch and is a bit hit and miss with results as well, but we could go top this weekend with a win at Leicester.

Now we have no back up so it makes no sense. Christmas is going to be fun.

He can be recalled if need be. No point having him on the bench or in the 'stand just in case'. He needs football, he's stagnated in the last 12 months and I'm sure this loan move will do him the world of good.

I'm not convinced by the loan system as it's used these days. Did any of the loans we've sent players out on in recent years actually do any of the players any good? It hardly helped the careers of Fabio or Machada. Lingard got loaned here there and everywhere, but did that help him?
