The old Man Utd Thread

I don't begrudge Boro the win last night, they certainly fought their asses off and deserved it, but special mention needs to go to the ref. Lingard probably should have been sent off, if that guys foot had been planted it would have been a disgusting break. But similarly, everything else went to Boro, as if he thought he had to atone for it. At least twice, Martial and Young, were both fouled but the decision went inexplicably the wrong way. We should have had at least 1 penalty for handball, the other 2 were inconclusive. Apparently raising your foot to head height is ok when you are Boro and a Utd man tries to head it. It's perfectly fine as well to push an attacker in the back when challenging for a header in the box.

But even so, Boro deserved it, we are just completely ineffective in front of goal. When our 3 youngest players are our 3 best players on the pitch, there is something wrong. (I'll give credit to Fellaini as well, I thought he played well if it weren't for his misses.) But thank fuck De Gea signed his contract, if I had to rely on Romero for the year I think I'd have a nervous breakdown.

This is poor. After a decent spell of games, in the last 3-4 matches we've gone back to being a team creating very very few chances. Rooney had a great opportunity when played through but was just too slow to get on the end of it (quelle surprise) but aside from that we've done very little and Palace are looking more likely.

We really need to get Martial back in the centre, it's such a waste playing Rooney there instead.

It seems like Van Gaal's plan is to monopolise possession - 65-70% each game - with a safety first approach, while counting upon our strikers to convert the 1-2 clear cut chances we might create per game. Boring but effective if you have a great striker.

The fatal flaw in this plan is that he seems hell bent on playing a striker having his worst spell in years, and quite possibly in 'past it' territory given his startling lack of pace and ball control, as our main striker.

Three 0-0 draws in a row given the amount we've spent on this squad is simply unacceptable, whether we're third or not.

If these performances carry on we'll quickly slip down that table though. Why LvG is continuing with Rooney up top is baffling. This is the worst prolonged loss of form I've ever seen from him and the team needs shuffling around to take the focus off him. We're just so boring these days, it's painful to watch.

I really can't wait for the LvG era to end. I've no problem with us not winning stuff so long as we're competitive and play the right way. I don't look forward to watching the games any more.

This. I'm sure all our players would play much better, playing fast and enjoyable football.

I thought we were decent last night, not much to grumble about. I'd like to see us play with just one holding midfielder though in more games.

Lining up with

Schweini/Carrick/Schneiderlin

Young/Lingard, Mata, Memphis

Rooney, Martial

Opta’s statistics show that United have made more backward passes (17%) than any other Premier League club so far this season. They have the lowest percentage when it comes to moving the ball forward (30%) and their ratio of sideways passes is the joint second highest in the league. At the same time, a club renowned for attack-minded football has a team that has taken only 77 shots, lower than every other top-flight side bar Sunderland and barely half as many as Manchester City’s 148.

:hmm:

Pretty much sums up why fans don't enjoy watching the games anymore.
