The old Man Utd Thread

You know you've gotten rid of too many attacking players when you're relying on fucking Valencia to save the game, a player who has been RB for several years and contributes nothing upfront anymore.

This season I fear that we're going to rue getting rid of Januzaj, Hernandez and Van Persie in one go. Not having a single proper game changer on the bench is just embarrassing for a team with our resources.

And Wilson. And Di Maria.

Yeah I didn't mention them because Di Maria was obviously going to go and Wilson is more potential than anything, whereas the other three seemed like we could and probably should have kept them. But, at the risk of sounding like a broken record because i've said this several times this season already, I simply cannot fathom the reasoning behind what we've done to our attacking options this season. I just can't make sense of it. We have a complete overload of passers in the squad and no attacking threat whatsoever on the bench.

Valencia and Fellaini are nowhere near good enough options to chase a game with. Not even close.

Hope shaws injury doesnt mean blind will now play at left back, hes been superb at centre back so far

Yeah, I was kind of hoping Rojo would come on at left back, even though Blind is probably better there. He didn't look that sharp and we missed Blind's calmness in the middle. Obviously we missed Shaw's driving runs more. Van Gaal is going to have to find that balance again.

A lot of Shaw's attacking game is about bravery, taking players on and committing himself, epitomised by him bursting through for the shooting opportunity. Although this is exactly what brought on the challenge (which was clumsy, but can only be considered part of what was a freak incident), it would be a huge shame if he doesn't trust himself to take these chances when he comes back. As is often the case with this sort of injury, his recovery may be as much mental as physical.

Bit better than ligaments isn't it? If there's any positive to take.

Hope he comes back strong.

Physically, yes, mentally, no. It must be very easy to hold back a bit on any future 50-50 and that's the kind of thing that can really make a difference at the top level. Feel for the guy, hope he recovers fully.

Am I the only one who saw Wilson in the stands in Utd suit gear a number of times last night? He hasn't gone yet I assume?

As for the performance last night, it was truly shocking. How Scholes said he was encouraged by it is baffling. "Looking" threatening is not the same as being threatening. It was a truly inept attacking performance, bar Memphis's goal. Everyone either wanted to take pot shots from way out, inevitably hitting the first defender, or wanted to walk it in. Mata had his 2 fuck ups, Fellaini, Memphis, Young, Martial, Darmian, Smalling(!), all just put the head down and drilled the ball straight into their defenders.

Smalling is the only one who can come out of that game with any sort of credit. Blind can't play LB, doesn't have the pace to attack or defend. Rojo played a world cup at LB, I know it's not his favoured position, but Blind has been a revelation in there and we might be better balanced with Rojo on the left, or maybe Young?!

I don't know what's going on with our attacking situation, it seems people are afraid to fail too much, but that attitude leads to conservative play and an attacking performance like we produced. Memphis for the goal decided to attack, Shaw for his injury decided to attack, Schweinstieger for Mata's 2 yard fuck up decided to attack, Smalling for his interception and run decided to attack. These are the only points where we WERE actually threatening. Everything else was just fluff. Moral of the story is, knock the fear of attacking out of them and we might get somewhere.

Looking at a list of recovery times from this kind of injury on the BBC website, it looks unlikely that Shaw will have any chance of making the Euros.

The tournament starts in 269 days. Henrik Larson recovered from a double leg fracture in 212 days, Bryan Oviedo in 218, Aaron Ramsey took 252, and Eduardo 296. Even if he recovers a month or so before the tournament, he's not likely to have enough time to build up match fitness, never mind the confidence to play in his usual fearless style. The final day of the season is on 15th May, 243 days from now. It might still be a good idea for him to target the Euros from a psychological point of view. Those sort of targets seem to be quite useful when recovering from an injury, as they help motivate the player to do the hard work to come back.

United though, will have to restructure their defence. It has to be Blind at left back, as he was good there last season, and Rojo is a really terrible fullback. He has no idea when to get forward and gets caught upfield at bad times. He doesn't give you much in an attacking sense either. Blind however was a big part of that left-sided axis we had at the end of last season, when Young and Fellaini benefited from his intelligent play.
