The old Man Utd Thread

Liverpool are terrible. If we had a half decent frontline we'd smash them but we don't. Because for some reason we got rid of them all and didn't replace them.

Every single game I watch us, I just wonder how on earth we're ever going to score. We look good to a point but there's no edge at all. We have to ask how we've spent so much money to end up with Fellaini up front and an unproven teenager as the only other real option.

I think you also have to question whether we really need all of Schweinsteger, Carrick, Herrera and Mata on the pitch. There's just too much duplication.

Mignolet has been our most creative player.

Shaw is playing well, and I'm enjoying watching the thoroughly devious Darmien, but our attacking players have all been disappointing. Fellaini up front is throwing them off. His movement isn't that of a natural striker.

I've never seen a team more capable than ours of neatly working the ball from the edge of the opposition box to the halfway line, though.

Van Persie and Hernandez leaving were such huge mistakes in that having such players can only be a benefit considering how much we just spent to try and replace them in the guise of Martial, who apparently is only potential for the next manager. I wasn't that bothered about Welbeck going but it's a sign of us really not being able to bring anyone better in. Even Januzaj would be better up front, he at least has control.

Fitting that the breakthrough came from a set-piece! Nothing's happening in open play.

Lots of teams only have one orthodox striker in their first team (Benzema at Madrid, Suarez at Barcelona, Lewandowski at Munich) but crucially they have others that can still be effective in that position if injuries happen. For us, those players were probably Depay and maybe Januzaj, and we missed out on signing a player who is an excellent 'makeshift' striker in Pedro. There aren't enough strikers out there to be able to have two top-class ones in your ranks, but you should be able to shift things around, tweak your approach if need be and still carry a threat.
