Hello,

I am a graduate student at James Madison University and I am

currently conducting a study looking at people who play video

games. If you have any experience playing video games, I would

appreciate it if you could please complete the survey at the

link below. It takes approximately 5 to 10 minutes to complete

and all responses are completely anonymous. I will not ask for

any identifying information. Also, if you know anyone else

with video game experience, please forward this along to them.

Thank you.

Done.

Question 57 doesn't need to exist, by the way. The categories are the opposite of those in questions 55 and 56 and since you can vote in both the positive and negative you're effectively asking the same question twice.

Sorry, I lost interest before the questions became gaming related.

While surveys are very difficult to take for the person taking them, they do provide a lot of useful information. I tried to keep the survey as short as possible and maintain the purpose of the study. The survey may seem tedious, but should not take more than 10 minutes to complete. I respect your right to withdraw from participating and I appreciate you giving it a chance in the first place.

Lofarius, mate, that wasn't nice.

Jonathan: "Avg grade in High school" doesn't really mean anything to we Brits fella. I suppose we can take a guess

and especially "avg grade in college" since we don't use A/B/C at UK Universities.

I have no problem filling out similar questionnaires for people who post here on a regular basis. But when someone just joins up and there very first post is requesting forumites to fill out a questionnaire then it seems spam like/suspisious to me. As indicated by your post he doesnt even take into account that this is a UK forum.

Done. Was annoyed by the duplicate questions at the end though.

.::: Actually they serve a purpose, as you can see how a person gets influenced by mentioning something positive negatively. Some people give different answers leading to more insight to how such a person thinks.

The survey was okay apart from the rating yourself bit at the end. I always imagine that those parts must not get accurate results as I was very bored by that point.

It also seemed to be a little loaded as well. In the sense that you could see what you are looking to get out of it and perhaps I found myself answering the questions a certain way. Its hard to explain.

Anyway. Good luck with your work.

I can understand your suspicion. I posted on this site understanding that it was mainly for UK gamers because I did not want to narrow my focus to only people of the United States. I want to find out the habits of all gamers without discriminating based on country. The best way for me to collect data is to poll as many people as possible and unfortunately that requires me to post on sites that I do not frequent. I am not trying to bother anyone and am simply asking for volunteers. To those of you who take the survey, I am very appreciative. I am hoping that my research may change general conceptions of people who play video games. I respect anyones right not to participate.

Questions 16 and 17 seem to be quite limited:

What was the MAIN reason you (started playing video games/play video games now)?

Competition (to be the best player of the game)

Challenge (the desire to beat the game or get to the next level)

Social Interaction (to play with friends)

Diversion (to pass time or alleviate boredom)

Fantasy (to do things you are incapable of doing in real life)

Arousal (because the game is exciting)

I don't think any of those quite cover why I play games: to think creatively to solve problems, to appreciate the craftsmanship, to ascertain meaning, and because it feels good. I suppose 'Challenge' and 'Arousal' cover some of that.

Also 'adventure' isn't listed as a genre.

I suspect you're fishing for links between fans of video game genres and physical/behavioural problems at school etc, which is pretty insulting to the wonderful diversity of the human race, and piss-poor conjecture. What's this for, pop psych 101?

That's a negative assumption. Perhaps he's trying to demonstrate that there isn't a link?

Either way it would be bad science, wouldn't it? Aren't you supposed to start with no pre-concieved views of whether there's a link or not (because that will colour the way your frame your questions), and instead draw any conclusions only from the data?

Yeah, but it's only done for the course, or a preliminary. If it were a serious questionnaire it would be twice, three times as long and he'd sit down with each participant and go through the questions with them.
