Rock Band!

Recommended Posts

I did a twat thing and got rid of my PS3 Rock Band 2 (with RB1 instruments) last December thinking I wouldn't miss it, I want it back. Does anybody know when it's out in this country? Also, what are the best instruments to use, the Guitar Hero WT ones (not interested in that game), the Rock Band 1 or Rock Band 2 set?

I'm back! :(

After trying unsuccessfully to repair my broken red drum, I've ended up buying a set of the Madcatz portable drums and just attaching them to the old frame.

There's sticky-backed Velcro under the Madcatz pads, then the old official silencing pads are stuck on top. The self-adhesive backing isn't too sticky any more as it's been on and off the RB1 kit a bunch of times, hence the duct tape. It's not very elegant, but it gets the job done.

First impressions are actually pretty good. Seems nice and accurate. I wouldn't be surprised if I end up totalling them, but we'll see.

The nice thing is that the 'brain' (the wee NES-controller-looking thing in the middle) will take an input from any piezo trigger, so I'll be able to use proper drum triggers in future. :(

I've done the Beats and Fills achievements. Now to grind through the Challenges. I do wish you could go straight to the Impossible Challenges.

beenabadbunny/Eleventyjeff... you're my hero :)

BTW... did you dismantle 2x Rock Band pedals and buy two separate beaters to hold the magnets?

What's your setup!? PM me please :(

shirubagan, shirubagan, shirubagan. I've been telling you to do this for months, if you'd just read the thread. :(

Didn't dismantle anything official, I just bought some bits from Maplin and hacked it all together myself.

Old pics abound in this very thread: here and here.

The only difference now is that as I'm using my pedals regularly in an actual band, I had to put the beaters back in the right way up, hence the practice pad for them to hit. The switching magic is still under the footboard rather than at the beaters.

The left pedal doesn't do anything game-wise, I just prefer having it there because it's easier to play the double-bass sections when it's there, even though the game only expects the right foot.

I am going to install some piezos in a set of beaters and run them out to a drum module for triggered kicks when I play live, but that's a whole different story. :(

Grr, slightly annoyed now.

I decided when RB2 came out to keep the original as I had the five remaining songs on expert guitar to do. I hoped with the practice I gained on RB2 I would be able to go back and finish. So I ploughed my way through everything in RB2 (bar 'Visions' but that's another story) on Hard difficulty. And started working through expert. Then I bought a new LCD TVand with a little bit of messing around I managed to calibrate RB2 properly.

So tonight I'm playing RB2 on expert and what should pop up in a mystery setlist but 'Train keeps Rollin' by Aerosmith and I managed to four star it first time. I'm well impressed so afterwards I put the original game in and attempt the same song on Expert guitar where I promptly fail at 22%.The calibration settings are no good on my new TV so I try altering them. Over an hour later, I'm still no better off no matter what I try.

I've tried the LCD setting - no joy. I tried matching the settings to those in RB2 but in that game the calibration is split between Audio calibration and Video calibration. The original game only allows you to calibrate Audio/Video together with a seperate setting for lag.

Can anyone help? I realise it's not that important, but I would love to finish the remaining five in the original if I could.

Sounds strange. What version are you playing? On my 360 versions, I'm sure both games have separate audio and video calibration.

Anyway, I generally found it easiest to calibrate by audio first - get that one right as it's easier to tell if you're playing in time to the music or not. Then (unless you have major lip sync problems with your TV in general) you should find your video calibration is the same as your audio. Well, it worked for me.

I found RB1 easier to calibrate than RB2, though, and they did seem to require different settings.

It's true. You have been telling me. I have many shames. I also now have 2 working Rock Band pedals. Need a switch controller

They're handled differently. In Rock Band 1, you calibrate the video and offset the audio in relation to the video. In Rock Band 2, you calibrate both individually.

Generally, the audio and video are off by the same amount, unless you're using a separate sound system. In RB2, this means keeping both values the same. In RB1, it means keeping the audio offset at 0ms.

Brilliant. That makes perfect sense based on what I've seen (after endless, endless calibration attempts on both games) and explains why my figures are so different for the two titles.

It's also worth pointing out (because it's badly signposted) that you can manually adjust the lag offset in RB2 by pressing [yellow/R1/pedal/something] before starting the calibration tool. If you happen to know your TV's lag, you can set it exactly (same figures for Guitar Hero too), as I find the tool isn't very accurate, giving me wildly different results every time. The whole thing's unintuitive and took me ages to get it 'right'.

You can get yourself another 1 by setting up a new ea account with a different home address and email. That way it'll be sitting waiting for when it DOES happen again.

I got my second one with the same account after only 2 days. It was legitimate, I destroyed the second one so quickly.

After far, far, far too much messing about, I got the original game somewhat playable. Enough so that I managed to complete 'Train Keeps Rollin' and 'Run To The Hills.' It's still nowhere near as accurate as my RB2 setup though.

And I doubt I'll ever complete GG&HT.

Now I just have that really long song with the two massive solos on expert guitar, the Green Grass something something. I can get 85% through it and then fuck it up on the 1232123212321232123212321 bits because the pressure is far too immense.

The 'safest' way is to get to that section with a full overdrive bar and spam your way through it hitting only the 321 parts (basically going down constantly) and before the next zig-zag, whammy the fuck out of the white notes to get half an overdrive bar to spam your way through the next zig-zags. Don't ask me about the very final part though, I always fluke that part.

The words of a man who has done it more than once :(

I've gotten better! It is also a lot easier on the Rock Band 2 disc since you get Breakneck Speed mode, to be fair. The only songs that frighten me are Thrasher and Aesthetics of Hate. They look mean (I'm too pussy to download them). And the Malmsteen instrumental track.

Does the band in a box edition only use one usb port or does i t come with a hub or anything? I have seperately a guitar hero 3 guitar, the rock band drums and then today bought the logitech USB mic but i just went to play it and found out the PS3 only has 2 USB's... Sick as i never bought a USB hub.

Anyone know if a USB hub will work on the ps3 or what my options are?
