Anyone got any tips for playing on Hard?

I've been playing through the game on medium and its getting a bit boring because it doesn't take much effort to 100% every song, but when i take the difficulty up a level i'm fucking rubbish. The extra fret button completely fucks me up, especially when so many notes are coming down the screen and i have to constantly switch my hand position. I can normally get through the songs thanks to overdrive, but it doesnt stop feeling like i'm playing like a retard.

Keep at it, it just takes a while to get used to. One thing that might help though, is to have your fingers starting on the red button, rather than green. I quite often found it easier to stretch my index finger for the green, rather than my pinkie for the orange.

I suggest possibly "the middle" if you have rock band 2.

The note chart is fairly 'mundane' as its just long stretches of the one note with a couple of sections using the orange note.

It should also get you used to 'alt-strumming' if you don't do it.

I play mostly like Squigs does. My hand tends to stay in one place, with the index finger moving to the side to cover the green button as needed, with the occasional shift of the entire hand if I genuinely can't do the fret combination that way. There aren't many of those, though.

This method got me through Expert on Rock Band and most of Hard on Rock Band 2 so far.

I don't alt-strum. Should I be? I can play all songs on RB on hard except GG&HT and Flirting With Disaster, (not finished RB2 yet), and it's the solos with the tricky hammer-ons that are beyond me on those.

Quite fancy the Belly. Might be fun, (by which I mean the song is now stuck in my head).

I think alt strumming is necessary for Rock Band 2 particularly, and my hand dies on some songs if I don't try it. I can't get it right, though. So I just end up frantically strumming like a madman instead - at least that way I can get the timing right, although my hand ends up throbbing like a sumbitch.

I find two things help my alt-strumming.

1. The click on the strummer of my GH3 controller

2. Tapping my foot along to the 'beat' as well.

Both help me keep in time.

Since playing Rock Band I can't get on with the fret buttons on the GH 3 guitar. I save that one for guests. I like being able to slide my fingers up and down on the fret buttons of RB guitar.

Maybe just practice alt-strum on something like The Middle as suggested, but even then only when it becomes obvious that I really need to.

There's no hard rule to determine what to do with your hands, just use whatever's most comfortable. I'm pretty sure I started out keeping my forefinger around the red and moving when needed, but these days I'll play with whatever's in mind. Easy and Medium train you to associate a fret with a finger, on Hard and Expert you then need to un-learn all of that.

It's not unusual for me to play a sequence of blue and orange notes with my fore- and middle fingers. Whatever I find easiest to do a section, I'll use. I might even change the next time I play it.

Practising is the only way to get there, so stick at it.

I've never bothered learning alt strumming. The only times I've used it are when the notes are too close for me to expect to hit them all over a long period of time (Hier Kommt Alex is a good example of that if I remember right and am not getting it mixed up with its GH3 cousin). Instead I just vibrate my arm.

Yup, I'm like this as well. It's how I ended up using the red button as my starting point.

I'm also another one who never bothered to learn alt-strumming, mainly because I'd spent so long on GH using just down-strums that I could never quite unlearn my way of playing.

I reckon I'd be shit using the GHWT drums or a twin-rocker for the very same reason.

Yup and this makes Let There be Rock on Expert bass a hand destroying song.

I was playing this (RB2) the other day and only realised that I hadn't yet got the Flawless Fretwork achievement when it suddenly popped up at the end of We Got The Beat. Not sure why I never got it sooner, or on an easier track (So What'cha Want springs to mind... )

Hey gang,

Here's the DLC announcement arriving on the week of 1/27. We're busting out our second Grateful Dead pack, bringing you six more tracks from one of the jammin'est bands around. Seriously groovy stuff. The Grateful Dead Pack 02 will contain the following tracks:

Hell In a Bucket

Don't Ease Me In

Cold Rain & Snow

Doin' That Rag

Fire On the Mountain

Uncle John's Band

All tracks are original master recordings.

These tracks will be available on Xbox 360 in the Xbox Live Marketplace on January 27th, and they will be up on the Playstation 3 in the Playstation Store on Thursday January 29th. We'll have more information on upcoming Wii DLC posted shortly, so keep posted to this thread for more info.

These classic Dead tracks will run $1.99 (aka 160 Microsoft Points) a piece, or $9.99 (aka 800 Microsoft points) for the full Grateful Dead 6 pack.

:D
