Wii Virtual Console

Bumping up the screen res without touching poly count / texture res doesn't really improve the graphics. It throws out the ratio between the different elements and can make things look worse. In this case, exposing the very low poly count / texture res, which looked OK at low screen res.

I think you're right. Upping the resolution to 640x480 (or whatever the Virtual Console re-releases use) works pretty well as it just looks like a slightly cleaned-up version of the original; it doesn't actually change things too much. All the N64 games look pretty good on the VC.

Running N64 games through an emulator at high-resolution, though, looks terrible for the reasons you describe. It just doesn't look like the original game any more. This was always one of my main gripes with Retro Gamer magazine - their screenshots of N64 games were always taken via an emulator running at a ridiculously high resolution so they didn't look anything like the originals. Whereas EDGE's feature on Ocarina of Time featured shots that looked to be taken from either the original or the VC release, and was all the better for it.

Bubble Bobble Plus, Equilibrio and Family & Friends Paty this week.

I bought Equilibrio. It's like a 2D version of Kororinpa, sort of. Different types of ball and different hazards. Quite good.

.::: Looks like an upgraded Cameltry/On The Ball.

As well as being awesome in its own right, I like to think of Majora's Mask as a glimpse of a direction I wish Nintendo had taken with its games.

A re-used engine (to this day, I think MM is the only time Nintendo have done this) allowing faster turnaround on a title that had new ideas in gameplay, art direction & story.

Anyways, its a must download, & i'm glad the days of delays of titles between regions are, if not over, at least more rare.

I always thought TPP was pretty much WW in New Clothes.

I was considering getting Bubble Bobble on the NES for 500 points, but if Bubble Bobble Plus is the exact same game but with nicer presentation & extra levels for only 300 points more should I get that instead?

Bubble Bobble Plus is awesome, so yes, yes you should. The new Arrange mode is the first attempt at a new Bubble Bobble that keeps close enough to the template of the original to be on a par with it. As fun as they are, Bubble Symphony, Bubble Bobble III, Bubble Bobble Revolution, Bubble Bobble Old & New etc all try different ways to update the first one, but are all lesser games for fiddling with the simplistic magic of the original.

Equilibrio is great for 500 points, the kids are loving it too, especially on the balance board. In the conquest mode we don't seem to be able to go back to unlocked levels, which is a bit pants as you are shooting for a hightscore. Am probably missing something obvious though

Can you tell me a bit more about this? Everything I've seen regarding this version of Bubble Bobble just makes it look like the original. What's new about this version?

Oh man, Majora's Mask I probably even better than I remember.

Yeah same for me, this time i was prepared to put the hours into the game that it demands (and deserves) and wow its just really really good.

The next big one for me is Ogre Battle! Th N64 one was a lot of fun so im tempted to try out the snes one.

Hmmm, one of the optional masks you get almost seems like it was given to you at the wrong time. It would have been helpful to do a sidequest with but you have to do that sidequest to get the mask in the first place so it becomes useless. Odd.

Standard Mode is just the original Bubble Bobble with a fresh lick of paint. Higher res (480p - whoa), new sprites, but other than that, the same. Arrange Mode is 100 entirely new levels, with new enemies and slight tweaks to the gameplay, including 4-player action. Super Standard and Super Arrange are harder versions, and for 200 points each, you can buy Extra 1 and Extra 2, two even harder new modes, with 50 new levels a piece.

So just looking at the Standard Mode, you could think of it as a Rez HD style update (Bubble Bobble SD). Arrange mode doubles the package, with the optional Extra packs adding even more. All modes have ONLINE LEADERBOARDS, if such things are of interest to you.

  • 3 weeks later...

Are the other Master System Alex Kidd games any good? The ones* that aren't Miracle World?

I remember having Miracle World built-in to my system and I remember it being really fun. I played it again a few years ago and still enjoyed it, so I'm probably going to get it for nostalgic value. Is it worth getting the others considering I've never played them? Will I hate them?

* I think Lost Stars is the only one of the VC at the moment that isn't Miracle World, but I'm sure the others are coming soon.

what is this? I was going to purchase... is it broken?

This is how you have to compete 72 in the arcade version:

But, you can't as you can't put your back up against the wall any more. If you tap right, you move right - even if you do the tap-and-turn in midair. So there's not enough space in the hole to blow bubbles and jump on them.

I think largely thanks to the Virtual Console I have reverted back to the old way I used to play games, pre GameCube.

Playing Kirby's Dream Course is a breath of fresh air because I can dedicate hours at a time to simply messing around and experimenting on the different courses, working out the best strategies to defeat the enemies and sink Kirby in as few holes as possible. The medal awards are challenging but achievable (and they don't have that annoying feature that newer games are more keenly relying upon whereby you'll spend weeks earning gold medals only to discover that there is actually a special platinum award available if you pull off some absurd feat of gameplay), the courses are imaginative and fun, and I can play it in bed from the other side of the room without worrying about having to stay up for hours between save points if I get too tired.

:(

Is this just in theory, or has someone tried?

Except it isn't. They've broken how you turn around, so level 72 is now impossible.

I was playing this last night and did level 72 first time without any bother.

Jump right, shoot left, bounce, facepalm at somehow wasting an hour on it :o

I don't think I've ever completed Bubble Bobble before - those last levels with the invisible holes in platforms, or where you're totally dependent on the airflow, or where you'll get stuck and have to wait for whale-based death if you mess up are totally evil.

Sorry to be uncouth, but what's the best (read: cheapest) way to buy US Wii points these days? From vg+ it works out to £16.60 for 2000, through the console it's £13.80 plus the £1.50 Visa charge. Any cheaper options than those?
