I can see where he's coming from. I do love the album, but it's a very different beast from the ep's.

It certainly took me by surprise when I first heard it.

I was very pleasantly surprised. 8)

They're kind of different, but the same. As I mentioned in the opening post I think they sound more like rough sketches whereas the album seems fully formed, there aren't any of the processed vocals either which means one of the signature sounds from the album is missing. They're still well worth getting though, Sz2 is still maybe my favourite track of theirs.

I know nothing about the ep's, I'm halfway through my first listen to the album. So far it sounds like a Talking Heads record being played at the wrong speeds, deeply irritating. Maybe I'm getting too old for this shit.

I love this album lots but I do think the first half is slightly better than the rest. Maybe not better, more immediate, I kinda wish they had balanced out the more experimental stuff with the more rocking, pounding stuff.

Gotta love the drum sound on this album though.

Can anyone recommend me do anything similar to Battles?

I'd recommend some Don Caballero, starting with American Don. The main reason I originally checked out Battles was because their guitarist used to be in Don Cab. Everything they've done is worth checking but American Don, although certainly not identical, is the most similar in sound to Battles; very mathy jazz influenced instrumental rock - their earlier stuff is generally heavier.

Don Caballero - Fire Back About Your New Baby's Sex

Consistently great song titles, their drummer was incredible too.

It's hard to know what to recommend really, there are lots of bits of Battles songs that really remind me of other bands but nothing that's really general enough to say 'Battles sound like x'. The vocals are quite reminiscent of Animal Collective as a few people have said, 'Rainbow' always reminds me of certain Boredoms songs and the guitar style is similar to lots of math-rock bands but the way they've put it all together is pretty unique I think. It might have been the Pitchfork review that compared them with Disco Inferno which I thought was an interesting comparison. The only other direct one I can think of is Tortoise's 'Standards', I've never been much of a fan of theirs but most of my friends with similar taste love them so I'm sure that's my failing rather than them not being any good.

Chalk me up for thinking of standards as well. I can see the knife and AC vocal comparisons too, although I think they aren't as obvious comparisons. Why did I write this? I don't know.

Ok guys, i've listened to the second half now. It's fucking great too! This is pretty much the only new rock album i've really liked since God Speed's last one. Except maybe for Sun O))). I'm hearing a lot of Jungle in it too.

I would say it's up there in the top 5 albums so far this year.

Have you got Pink by Boris? Very very good album, totally recommended.

If it's good enough for you to make your 35th post in 2 and a half years, i'm all over that shit. Thanks for the recommendation.

Nice find! Been waiting to hear something new of theirs for ages. Kind of cringey that you have to go on that Twilight site to listen to it though.

It's good, although part of me can't believe they'll ever manage to top Atlas.
