Well that is why primes are fun to shoot with isn't it. With a zoom, you see something worth taking a picture of, then you frame the shot by zooming. When you have a prime mounted, because the field of view is fixed, the framing is the first thing you think about. Eventually you become so used to it, you can see a shot before you raise the camera up to shoot. If you like the perspective that a particular fixed-focal lens gives you, I'd agree there's probably no better way to shoot.

In other news Tamron have joined Sigma in developing lenses for the micro four thirds format. I was disappointed by Sigma's recent announcement though, pulling double duty as NEX lenses means they don't really fit into the system's ethos, as they aren't particularly small and light. If you're fine with the extra bulk, you're probably already using converted lenses. Here's hoping Tamron's efforts are more tempting.

Well I did it, I bought a GF-2 with the 14mm lens for £279.. I'll play around with it for a bit and look out for a 14-45mm on the cheap in the mean time. I'm sure it will cater for all my needs, will let you know how I get on.

I'll be putting my 20D with kit lens, carry case, and 8GB card up for sale tomorrow and I'll also have a 50mm f1.8 for sale too.. just need to figure out prices.

Nice one! I love the 14mm on my GF3, Its such a versatile lense, I find it on my camera most of the time.

I may be interested in your 50mm, my brother has just got his first SLR and 'borrowed' my dads 50mm so he is on the lookout for a new one I think.

So I am not really been active in photography partly since the day I was snapping insects and 3 guys approached me because I was taking pictures in the grass and a kids football match started up (I had been there first and it was a lens with no focus beyond 6")

Anyway we are going to New York this year and I am definitely taking my camera. It's a full frame camera and I have 24-105, a 50mm and a 100mm.

Now I dropped my 50 and while the lens is fine the AF is fudged. I tried to fix it myself but it's still a bit hit and miss on AF. I was thinking of replacing the 50 but then wondered if I should get something else.

I assume the 100mm prime won't be needed in America so it can probably stay at home. The 24-105 does just about everything - but should I consider something wider? Prime or zoom?

Its very hard to see past the 50 as a useful length and I expect 85 is a bit too long for tighter spaces. But maybe I am missing something. For New York I can't imagine I will really want something longer than 100mm - or should I be thinking of a longer zoom?

For Iceland I'm taking (on FF also) 16-35 (rented), 24-105, 50mm and gorillapod. If it wasn't for the landscapes it'd probably be just the 24-105 and the 50, so I think you're probably fine.

And don't worry about people telling you to stop taking photographs. Just tell them what you're doing calmly and confidently and offer to show them on the screen. If they're being aggressive move to a safe distance and phone the police.

I use a similar pair to these...

I think I'd rather get ones that I didn't need to reveal my fingers for. It's probably not going to be crazy cold (probably just a bit below zero) but my hands get cold at the best of times...

Hm. There are some on eBay, but I can't see any real shops that are selling them so I'd be buying blind. They're probably going to get bought though, I can't see much else. Mannfrotto seem to make a very similar pair for a mere £300, which is nice of them. To be fair, they do have a pocket to keep a memory card in, so it's not exactly for nothing.

I used Gore Bike Wear gloves which are pretty good, thin and light, and have small rubber grip bits so it's easy to hold the camera. Still found my hands were cold after a while but good overall.

Kinda like these. Although I didn't pay anywhere near that!

Woo just bought a new lens, the Tamron 17-50 2.8 which seemed to get great reviews and is pretty well priced as well. I went for the model without VR as from what I've read the image is softer on the VR model and on the range of the lens I can't see it being hugely important to have.

ive just got myself a lovely hand made leather camera strap for my X100, when my half-case comes, expect some top notch camera porn.

What did you go for if you don't mind me asking?

I've been on the hunt for one and settled on Wapiti Straps, it's yet to arrive to see what it's like ~ The stock strap feels like it sits in my armpit.

Nice, thats what I just got as well! Been really happy with it so far!

I think it was you talking about it that made me go and check it out, so cheers for that. I had a play in Jessops on sat and it seems really nice, ordered it from Wex though as they are cheaper.

Whatever, definitely read back through the last, 6 pages or so. We've done it a couple of times recently for bodies.

Do you want them to be saleable? That more or less rules out the XZ-1 which would seem to be the most obvious choice so you'll definitely be in M4/3 or NEX territory. The latter is definitely better quality-wise, but for me they were too big for a second camera.

Lens wise, I'm not sure. There are some nice wide-angles but they're expensive, but the mid-zooms are all a bit average - there isn't anything I've been convinced about. Nothing particularly fast. I've very much treated it as prime-only territory.
