Just picked up a couple of new rentals - a Canon EF 35mm f1.4 L USM and a Canon EF-S 17-55 f2.8 IS USM, both for the wedding we're shooting on the weekend. I did a bit of digging and discovered the venue is quite small with a dark function room, so I went with a 35mm on one body for the low light/tiny dof stuff, and my 24-105 f4.0L IS USM on the other for when I need a bit of zoom. I must admit I've gone off the 24-105 quite a bit since getting it, I'll probably sell it and get myself the 24-70 instead at some point. My fiancée as second shooter will use the 17-55 the whole time, though I'll nick it for the largest group shots.

I also shot a charity event on the weekend which went quite well, got some great shots for the Alzheimer's society website/flickr page/newsletter. Came across my first 'Uncle Harry' character, a society staff member who had brought along his camera (with flash for some reason) and attempted to jump in front of me at every opportunity and flash the visiting Lord Mayor of Bristol at point-blank range. Thankfully the event organisers told him to cut it the fuck out and let the professionals do their job. Professionals! I like the sound of that. Wish it were true.

I've got to take mine in for repair again, and partially related to that I've gone right off it. I'd rather be using any of my other lenses - probably in order of use for the last 6 months it's been Sigma 50mm, Samyang 14mm, Canon 24-105, Sigma 100-300 with the latter making swift progress upwards.

I'm hoping the 5D3 will prompt a new 24-105, or more likely a new 24-70.

i'm itching to get the 24-70 (hope the new one has IS.. sure it will).. as it's a real gap in my kit, I currently mainly rock with the sigma 10-20 and the 70-200 2.8 is.... so there's a nice fat gap between 20-70 that is starting to iritate me. I took the kit 18-55 with me on the corfe shoot to see what i'm missing and it pretty much made my mind up. Currently going through all my old crap in the loft seeing what I can ebay (anyone want to by a complete Cisco CCNA lab setup?)... pretty sure I've got enough to get one and a set of lee hard grads. I could in theory just go and buy it, but with Crimbo round teh corner, 2 kids and a wife I can't really justify it.

How do you find shooting wedding Morius? I've thought about it, but to be honest i'm not really comofrtable with the responsibility and I don't really feel comfortable doign portraits or directing people, I much prefer doing landscapey stuff or just documentary/off the cuff stuff. I've got a friend who does it, and to be honest the quality is a bit shocking. Uneven horizons, lopsided building, photographs of the bride/groom on patches of muddy grass.... a real lack of attention to detail.

I've only done one prior to this, which was really enjoyable. I don't really have any experience with formals/group shots etc, so that's the bit I'm most worried about. There's a bit in the contract about how the bride and groom have to dictate who is in each shot (and then I direct those people) which takes the edge off a bit. I've got a PDF full to the brim with wedding poses on my iphone which I can refer to for inspiration if need be. Everything else I shoot in a fairly documentary and unobtrusive style, wandering between guests and areas trying to catch little moments that set the day apart from every other wedding.

You learn a shitload the very first time you do it, I'm nervous as hell handling this upcoming one by ourselves for the first time, but we've made very clear to the bride and groom that we're new to the game. We've only charged a token amount, enough to get ourselves there and a cheap B+B for the night. She's immensely happy to have us, even despite our lack of experience, as her entire wedding budget is about what most people spend on a photographer these days. I'll let you know how it goes :D

I've just had a play with the 35mm 1.4 L. That's one yummy lens. The 17-55 seems a bit plastic fantastic but it's hard to argue with the specs or the optics.

Hola. I'm looking at getting a bridge camera and the Panasonic FZ150 looks lovely, yum. I just went to check prices and have seen it as low as $415 (£270) in the US and the best price for UK is about £380.

Is this sort of gap typical or is it because it's a brand new camera? Will the price drop if I wait a month or so?

Well, 20% is £60ish, so that makes it £330 before you consider anything else, so it's not *totally* ridiculous...

Just traded in all my Nikon gear for m43

Thus far, just the E-P3 twin-lens kit, with the Olympus 9-18mm and 75-300mm on order. I already have a VF-2 and FL-36R from the XZ-1. I'll sell the 40-150mm from the kit for a tidy profit.

I've barely had a chance to play with it since the battery charged, but first impressions were good - taking photos indoors with the fairly slow kit-zoom (I'm used to the XZ-1's f/1.8 ), and not realising it was shooting at ISO1600, as the picture quality was so good! AF is incredibly fast on the bundled lenses. Overall package is small but solid feeling - one of the densest bits of technology I've ever held. The FL-36R feels like a good balance on the body, while on the XZ-1 it completely screws the balance. Oh, and the grip isn't really good enough - I'll order the optional larger grip, I think.

More updates when I've had a chance to use the thing!

Pretty sure Adobe were not the first with this, I am sure I have seen a specific piece of software that claims to do exactly this. Does it only remove motion blur, and not focal blur? i.e the blur has to have a discernable direction/vector path?

I've got around £500-£600 to spend on a replacement for my aging Canon 18-55 kit lens. Is there any reason why I shouldn't buy a Sigma 17-50 f2.8 EX DC OS HSM? It'll complement the nifty fifty and 70-300 (AF) I've got already.

I also fancy something a bit wider for landscapes and the odd building, any thoughts? The Sigma 10-20 f3.5 EX DC HSM?

Is it worthwhile spending more on the Canon equivalents in either case?

Got an Olympus XZ-1 that I'm picking up tomorrow (so excited!).

Can anyone recommend a case that isn't crazy money. Only want a slim case to put it in whilst it's in my bag.

I got a Lowepro one for mine - I'll check which one it is in the morning. You'll love the XZ-1.

I'd be tempted to go with the sigma soong mentioned or better still a canon 10-22 which is meant to be amazing.

Depends if you only ever want to carry about one lens though. Did you look into the Canon 17-55 2.8?

Which 18-55 do you have? The EFS IS one? I really like mine, just needs some good light, which is why the 17-55 2.8 appeals to me.

I'm out off buying into the EFS lenses though in case I update to full-frame, which I really want to at some point.
