Has anyone had problems with Flickr recently? For the past few weeks operations will randomly stall or time out, such as saving tags, adding photos to groups and so on. My connection is stable and other webpages work fine, it's only Flickr that seems to have a problem.

Criticism sure is anathema to this place.

(Andy S just called me a cunt and then deleted it )

Thanks for your great rebuttal though matey.

I deleted it within a minute of posting because I realised the discussion was from a few days ago. The sentiment still stands - you're comments just come across as bitter personal attacks against Gerald rather than anything constructive.

He was absolutely right though. You are a cunt.

You see, the problem is this.

You're one of the, sadly increasing in number, people here who think that it's perfectly acceptable to take the fact that you disagree with someone on one particular subject, in one particular thread, and carry that vitriol around with you as you saunter around the forum, looking to pick an argument purely for the sake of, well, picking an argument. In a thread that - until your contribution - was full of hundreds of posts from people all contributing in a positive manner (even when disagreeing with one another) on whatever subject was under discussion.

You don't make any positive contribution to the thread in question, because - unlike everyone else who posts in this particular subsection of the fourm - you were never looking to make a positive contribution. You just wanted to look cool. To look clever. To score points.

By now of course, there could have evolved an interesting discussion about the merits of the particular piece of kit in question (it's arrived, I've been testing it out for a couple of days now), but your pathetic, childish, envious, little snipes killed that stone dead.

Should I be the better person and ignore you, and share my thoughts about this particular tripod head compared to others that I have owned, perhaps helping someone at some point make a better informed decision on what to buy, based on the my experience?

Quite possibly.

But you know what?

I no longer give a fuck about this part of the forum. I used to, but no more.

I'll share my thoughts and opinions with other people, in other places, through other channels.

Whilst the likes of you pollute what was once one of the better corners of this forum with your pathetic, purile, snide little comments, I won't trouble you with any contributions.

You're misreading the crowd. People often have to find a little courage to post their creations online, and traditionally this folder has been (I think) quite welcoming of stuff ranging from beginner to professional. There isn't much space for criticism because on the whole, people aren't receptive to it. If they are beginners, their confidence will wither, and if they're professionals, they're not going to pay attention.

It's certainly not the place to maintain some personality clash spilled over from another folder/subject - not that I know if you are doing that, but the search function doesn't show you in a fantastic light when talking to Gerald about his photography. And whilst you're probably thinking you're only helping, you should realise that questioning the very point of his work was always going to annoy.

@Gerald

You've over-reacted.

Maybe so.

But for me this is no longer an enjoyable place to post. And if there's no enjoyment, why bother.

You're one of few on here who have allowed us all to see what you've done to become a better photographer (certainly not something I have done at all) - your journey is different to most due to the fact you can afford a more regular purchase of toys, but that makes little difference to the process or end results really. From gigapixels to tilt shift to large format is always going to be interesting to hear about, but there are some cracking pictures in there too. I'm sure I'll bump into them on twitter so I don't think I will miss out too much on that front, but your pending disappearance will make this place a bit worse, certainly.

Just got back from the wickerman festival. I'd managed to get hold of an access all areas pass from a band member so I spent a bit of time against the stage in the photographers bay. Best view out of a croud of about 10,000 people watching The Coral and Feeder, so I'm a happy boy. Got 12gb of photos to go through now!

12 gig of photos? I do not envy you... Worse part of the whole thing.

What's the difference between the Manfrotto 498RC4 and 498RC2 heads? Is the RC4 just a newer model?

I'm through most of them. Out of everything I took, only about 200 are of bands. Feeder, The Coral, Gun, Twin Atlantic and Oil on Canvas. So it's not too bad,

Some nice photos there. What're you shooting with?

Hello chaps,

I'm currently looking at investing in a new DSLR and I thought this might be a good place to ask for people's opinions.

Firstly I'm a Canon boy, having used them for years, so it'd have to be something special to move me away from them, although I am open to suggestions.

So, for the camera, my primary focus is for taking great stills. I'm more concerned about image quality than anything else, although the higher megapixel offerings are pretty appealing to me. I'm not overly fussed about continuous shooting or video, I basically want a great stills camera.

I initially started by looking at the 7d and this looks like a great camera with all the functionality I could ask for. The 19 point focus grid looked pretty nifty, in particular. The only downside to this is the cost. It's really at the top end of my budget, so I started to look for a cheaper alternative.

I then found the 550d, which is considerably cheaper but not a million miles away in image quality to the 7d and also has the added benefit of a better LCD display.

I then looked at the 600d, which seems practically identical to the 550d, but with a poseable display and a few more beginner functions/auto settings thrown in.

So, have any of you used any of these cameras and what are your impressions? I'd also like to hear if there's anything else out there that fits what I'm after better than what I've looked at. In fact any opinions or advice welcome.

I'd love a 5d MkII, but they're way out of my price range at the moment. The original 5d doesn't seem to have dropped much in price either, so that's a bit too much as well unfortunately.

You seem to have missed out the 60D which falls between the 600D and 7D. It's main advantage is that the controls are nicer than the 600D, especially if you're not going to be on full-auto all the time. I'd definitely go and get your hands on the three to decide.

Or you could be patient and wait for the 5d3 to appear and get a second-hand 5d2 when people start selling - I think I'll be upgrading to the 3 if the price isn't too ridiculous.

then on the other side of the fence

http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/d7000.htm

In Kens oppinion (wether you like him or not)

The D7000 is Nikon's most advanced camera at any price. The fact that it sells for $1,200 make it a no-brainer, which is why it's sold out. The D7000 is Nikon's best DSLR ever.

comparision with the 7D

http://www.digitalphotographywriter.com/2010/11/canon-7d-vs-nikon-d7000-comparison.html

but if you're set on canon, i cant really help you after jumping from canon a couple of years ago I havent kept up on canon stuff.

Id seriously go to a camera shop and try get hold of the cameras in your hands, the ergo's on the D7000 are great

I love the 550D, but it's firmly at the consumer end of the market. Great image quality and as feature-packed as I would need it to be.

Is it really? It looks pretty feature packed, with a lot more settings than your average holiday snapper would ever use.

Anyway, I've continued to look and I'll post my summary up shortly. I know it's really going to come down to personal preference and budget in the end, but it's still good to hear knowledgeable people's opinions on the matter.

Has to be 7d if it's within your budget. Meant to be the mutts nuts..the problem with getting a 550d or 60d is that you will always have that nagging feeling "what if I had gone for the 7d..."

All the write ups i've read have been universal in their praise.. the autofocus is meant to be ungodly....
