CF Cards are faster than SD

Not much difference these days (about 16mb p/s vs 12.5MB p/s) and cameras that use high burst speed rely on buffers, not the speed to write to the card. The 1DmkIV can hold a hundred or so pictures in its buffer - in most situations that is more than enough. If it does fill it drops to near-bottom of the range framerate.

Durability is the biggest advantage now.

Cheers for the insurance recommendation for photoguard- got my insurance all updated and set to go.

All I need now is a couple more 16GB cards- amazon seems to have the cheapest at £64, unless anyone knows a better deal? I was amazed 7dayshop are currently so expensive for them!

Mind telling us how much it cost to insure what kit?

Sure- £25 a month to cover my 2 cameras, 4 lenses, laptop and flashes (their combined value is about £9000). Got Europe cover (I'm working in Barcelona next month, and going to Paris next weekend), but didn't bother with personal accident or indemnity.

Anyone got any good tipe/sites on using flash's? I've got a speedlight 580II, but I don't tend to use it too much. I know about using it for flashfill but i'm not sure how to get it to automatically ballance the power of the flash. Ishould 100% of the time in manual on my camera, will the flash pick up on this by ttl mettering and ballance the power output accordingly?

I'm about the same, it has to be said. I really ought to learn settings properly, but currently I tend to just use the flash on manual too. Bit fiddly, but at least it does what I want.

I've never used it under-pressure though.

Strobist is really good - probably goes way beyond what you are looking for but there are some good introductory articles as well.

My monopod came in very handy in the Pantheon a few weeks ago. Probably wouldn't have gotten away with a tripod.

Basically it reduces the vertical shake measurably, not nearly as much as a tripod but sometimes it's enough.

The one in Rome? Thta's probably my fave bit in Rome.. love the place. It's like a nice version of Paris.

Yup, it's a great site. It does get a little carried away at times, but y'know. Another lighting recommendation*:

Pretty much as definitive as definitive can be for lighting.

*I suspect "read the manual for your flash" would be up there, but I haven't done that yet.

Just got the glidecam balanced (no weights) with my 550d and 35mm. Smooth as butter :D I'm so glad it doesn't need weights as that thing is heavy to use for anything longer than a minute.

Looks like my 1D mk2's shutter started to die finally on me today, disaster:

Anyone had any experience of replacing their shutter with Canon UK or heard from someone who has? Will be back in the country relatively soon. According to 1D-Count it had 72000 actuations. After a quick look online people in the states a couple of years ago were paying anything from $250-$500 to get it fixed. People in the UK around £300 - but price seems to vary quite a bit. Gonna contact Canon Malaysia tomorrow as could possibly get it sorted in KL but reckon they're only gonna be able to give me an estimate without seeing it.

Am in Japan for a couple more days and saw a 2nd hand MK2 for around £500 the other day, looked in good nick. Also 60D in the same shop for around £570, I think new! Cheaper than online here though so might've been imagining it. Gonna check it out again now I might be in the market for a camera..

Any advice appreciated, ie a good place to get it fixed in the UK or an idea of pricing. Presumably if Canon fix the shutter it's guaranteed for another however many clicks? Disappointed with 72k but this camera has been used and abused by more than one owner so was expecting it sometime soon. But I need to work out what's best before I leave Tokyo really.

My 40D is currently with Canon CPS having it shutter replaced. They originally quoted £140 for it - it was out of warranty but had less than 5k acutuations so I got a bit bolshy with them (good for 100,000 my arse) and they're doing it for free after a couple of firm, polite but not happy phone calls. I don't know if its more expensive for a 1D - although given that they're supposed to be good for 200,000 IIRC on a MkII you may be able to blag a free fix or price reduction. Probably depends on how much kit you own and whether you're CPN registered. I've been told I should have my 40D back by the weekend. I'm not sure what warranty the work comes with (i.e. 12 months or a full 100,000 clicks). I think the shutter actuation isn't actually a valid guarentee but more a "guideline" if that makes sense.

Thanks for the reply. Less than 5k is a joke - not surprised they agreed to do it for free in the end. But I'd take £140! I'm not CPS registered. I'm aware the number of actuations is a guideline but imagined at the very least they give a full year on a new shutter - really they should guarantee a shutter up to 100k if they're saying it goes to double that on average.. Let me know if they tell you what guarantee your replacement 40d shutter has, I'd be interested to hear.

Can anyone recommend a decent, not too expensive monitor calibrator for colour/brightness? I've realised my laptop screen and desktop monitor look really different with the same photos. Ta!

I use the Datacolor Spyder 3 Express, it's about £70. Only difference between it and the non-express versions is lack of ambient light sensor, and the fact that it uses a deliberately dumb system of only creating one named ICC profile, making it supposedly impossible to calibrate multiple screen setups with it. Actually, all you have to do is calibrate one screen, then find and copy the .icc file, then calibrate the other screen (at least on a Mac - no idea how Windows does colour management). You have to do a Windows style activation when you first install, but according to a quick Google, there's actually no enforced limit on how many machines you can use it on.

You allegedly should re-calibrate every few weeks, but I've never been able to see the results of doing so, so only tend to do it every 6 months, or when I've moved the computer or installed an update that includes Graphics Drivers.

Ask at your local camera club though, most of them will have a loaner that they'll lend you for calibration.
