Thanks for all the help guys, if all goes well will be taking Liam's lens off his hands and will no doubt be posting the results of my endeavours elsewhere in the creative design folder soon!

Also hope to be back in here when I've got a bit more money to spend to upgrade, although I think we covered the bases pretty well.

Ah, nice suggestion, excuse my ignorance but what's the deal with a lens with that kind of range then, I presumed you'd either have to have a telephoto style lens for longer range shooting and then a wide angle macro for the closer range stuff.

As has been said, when shooting macro you don't want to be widening your field of view. I've got the Canon 60mm Macro (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Canon-EF-S-60mm-Macro-Lens/dp/B0008G2P72). It's a brilliant lens, but it's about as low a focal length as I'd ever want to go with a macro.

Oi Blunket!! RE remotes... Look for the interfit strobes Titan pro. Exactly the same as pocket wizards but only 90 quid. Will fire flash and camera remoltey up to 100m away.

Just read a review and they got 97/100, mainly because it's over half the price of a pocket whizz(it's compatible with them too)

Camera arrived which is awesome, but for some reason after about 10 mins use it just dies and I have to charge the battery again, battery shows full charge after about half an hour and then I get another 10 mins use, bit of a weird problem, not sure if it's the battery or the camera that's at fault.

Contacted the seller(it's a Hong Kong import I bought off eBay, lots of positive feedback but I won't deny being a bit concerned), they're cool about it and are going to send a replacement battery over to see if that's the problem.

Has it got an official battery in it? It might be hard to tell if it's a fake, maybe worth going on a google hunt for similar. Was it all sealed and stuff?

Does anyone have experience with a Canon EF EF50mm F1.8 II?

I'm looking for something cheep and cheerful that I can get up close and personal with.

Currently I'm using the kit 18-55 that came with the 550d, but get frustrated by the amount of times I miss a shot because I'm to close to focus.

I hear the bokeh is pretty poor on it, but the cost is only £60-70 so I guess that is to be expected.

Just wondering if there are any alternatives I should take a look at first.

The bokeh isn't all that bad imo. The construction of the diaphragm is pretty basic, so yeah it can get pretty rough stopped down. If you're using it for portraits, the focus distance is pretty close, so the background ends up being so blurred the 'quality' of the bokeh isn't a massive issue. When there's only a medium or low amount of blur, yes it's not ideal, but you expect that for the price and you have to spend a lot more to do better. Not sure why you'd want the 50mm to 'get up close and personal' though. The min. focusing distance is hardly outstanding and it doesn't have any more reach than the 18-55. That said it's a great lens, an amazing one for the price, and you should probably get one anyway.

Argh! I read it as 0.45mm :) I just took another look and it's 0.45m. Oh well...

If anyone uses the Canon Picture Styles, there are some additional ones for download at the Canon website here. A couple of them look quite interesting and if anyone wants a know how to get these on to the camera, please let me know and I'll put up a short description.

It's a possibility, it wasn't sealed. I'll see what happens when I try the one that turns up. They've been very helpful and responsive which is good.

If it was sealed I'd be very worried, if it isn't it is more likely to be a (reasonably) honest mistake. Just pay attention to your spider senses!

Yeah, they've been cool about it, they're sending an 8th sd card as way of apology and said they open the boxes to replace the power cable with a Uk one and a UK manual.

They're happy to replace it if needs be so I'd recommend them, £550 for a 600D is a good deal and faults can happen to anyone.

This will be a slightly annoying suggestion...But...Get Lightroom 3. It's very much worth the money and it'll make your life much, much easier - Photoshop is for editing images, going through and sorting out a weekend's 500 photographs is a nightmare - with Lightroom it's a pleasure.

I'm a week into my 30 day Lightroom trial and I am very, very impressed! I definitely want to buy it, but I noticed Lightroom 4 in in Beta. Does anyone know when it's likely to be released? I don't want to shell out a fair amount of cash for v3.4 when v.4 may be released in the near future.

Thanks.

Probably towards the very end of this year. Total guess, mind.
