Don't digital sensors (as opposed to film) filter out UV anyway, making a UV filter just a bit of glass? To that end, Hoya/Kenko do the Pro 1-D "Protector" range, which proudly do absolutely nothing other than act as a barrier on the end of your lens.

A lot of people confuse UV filters and polarising filters too. I have UV filters on some of my lenses purely for the protection. They do help with flare a bit, it seems.

Canon gang -

On a 5d Mk2, i can only see one "jog dial". how do you change the shutter speed + the aperture quickly? on my D90 and d3s i have 2 dedicated jog dials on the front and back for this. What am i missing?

Looks like the dial (around the 'Set' button, to the right of the main LCD) does this.

There are two, one just behind the shutter button, and one on the back that you can operate with your thumb.Same as all Canons bar the entry level models.

this being the flat clock type dial down on the back?

this big round thing?

that's a bit bonkers. Ah well, cheers!

This took me a while to figure out as well when I got my Canon, coming from Nikon I did initially think the Nikon layout was better, but this is starting to make more sense now. Also took me a while to realise that to change the aperture with the wheel the on switch has to be on the wee line bit.

Well, I sold some music equipment, paid off my credit card and have some cash left.

The choice comes near now ... blow it all on a Canon EF-S 17-55mm F/2.8 IS USM or get the Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM and get some change? And why isn't there an EF lens with a decent (wide)range for crop with a decent constant aperture and IS on board?

What's your current lens line up ? Is it the 50 1.8, 15-85 & 70-300 ?

Is your 15-85 wide enough for you ?

No, I have the following:

- EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS (kitlens)

- EF 50mm f/1.8

- EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM

I mainly want high quality in the wide angle/'general purpose' range (ie a high quality walkaround lens for a crop body), I got my telephoto quite well covered with the 50mm and 70-300mm. I'm not looking for an ultra wide, I borrowed a 10-20mm for a while but it was too wide for my liking. A replacement for the kitlens is what I'm after and I just have a hard time making up my mind between the 15-85 and the 17-55.

Both have great image quality

Both have IS and USM

The 17-55 has a nice wide aperture through the whole range

The 15-85 is a lot slower and has changing apertures through the range

The 15-85 has a better range on both ends

The 15-85 is considerably cheaper

The 15-85 is considerably lighter

Sigh. If it wasn't for the f/2.8 on the 17-55 (and lack thereof on the 15-85) it'd be a no-brainer, but I like the ability to shoot pictures without flash in low light conditions and I also like the extra DoF a f/2.8 offers. Apart from that, the 15-85 seems to be king and cheaper too. But that hateful f/5.6 on the 85mm!

I'm being very tempted to upgrade my DSLR. Currently have the Canon Kiss X2 (450D) but since seeing the 600D I've been getting cravings. Not sure if it's really worth it though, mainly wanting it for the HD video function. I could sell my camera and the kit lens along with another, maybe my Sigma 30mm 1.4 and it would probably come close to covering the cost of the full upgrade. Any thoughts?

*Actually it probably good you aren't here. I can see a weekend with zoom lenses, my local nudist beach and both of us ending up on the sex offender's register.

Would be totally worth it though.

Currently I'm looking into a second hand 17-55mm - it seems to go for a little bit more than a new 15-85mm and might be a smartet investment than buying new considering the big chance of selling it on eventually when I upgrade to fullframe.

@kimchi: nah, I really want a wider lens, and I prefer first party stuff over third party offerings. Especially for this range as I expect that to be my 'always on' first choice lens.

@dingle: Yeah, I want a zoom.

I've been lucky, and not had an issue with any of the Sigmas I've owned apart from the AF motor packing up in my 50-500mm after five years and it having to go in for repairs. And then there was the time I dropped a 10-20mm on a concrete block, but that was my fault. It still hurts today.

If I could have a bag full of Ls I would. Third party lenses can be a good balance between performance and cost and, from my experience, I think the QA issue has been exaggerated.

The 17-55mm is bloody excellent though.

That's pretty impressive Dingleberry, considering it's handheld. The 50-500 was a lens I was looking at buying and I went to the camera shop to test it out. The thing looked ridiculous on my little 450D. It's like a bazooka

The 550D body is crashing in price at the moment, if that's of any interest.

I can surely recommend the 550D. I bought it last year before any pricedrops and I'm very happy with it. The fact that I don't feel short-changed at all now that it's much cheaper says enough I think. Well worth at the old price, even better now. 18 Megapixel images, excellent noise reduction on high ISO, full HD video ... it's a very compelling package.

I just had a quick look, £526 on Amazon for the body-only. I don't trust Amazon when they list the original price as £799 though, especially considering they list the 600D for £678. How much was it going for before?

It is £524 on Warehouse Express who I can recommend.
