So why am I now again torn between the Canon EF-S 15-85mm F/3.5-5.6 IS USM while I just thought I made up my mind about getting the EF-S 17-55mm F/2.8 IS USM? Is it the larger range? Is it the favourable reviews? Is it the 300 euro price difference in favour of the 15-85mm?

Do I really need that f/2.8 when I already have a 50mm that can do f/1.8?

I swapped a 16-105mm for the Tamron 17-50mm f2.8 and haven't missed the extra range at all. That's largely down to the kinds of things I like to take photos of but you've got a 70-300mm, haven't you?

I guess the real question is - what's wrong with the 18-55mm (if that's your current 'kit' lens)? Quality, range or speed?

Quality mainly. Range isn't really an issue, although I suppose a total range of 15-300mm would be better than a range of 17-55 and 70-300mm with a gap inbetween. Speed isn't an issue most of the time (unless I'm photographing people indoors), although I do like the narrow DoF wider apertures provide.

Of course there's also the budget factor. I can get the 15-85mm for about 500 euro, while the 17-55 goes closer to 800. That's quite a huge difference, especially as the wider aperture is the only benefit if the comparisons on the review sites are anything to go by.

Just popped this in ATF but you guys probably know...

What is this style of photo called?

How would I go about taking a photo like this? Is it some sort of special lens and/or software?

And could the effect be achieved using a 3D model of a scene?

Cheers

Edit: Already sorted in ATF, thanks!

Yeah man, for a start it's not all about DOF but rather light levels, you can capture motion in lower light with the 2.8. But more importantly, the 17-55 has the same maximum aperture right through the range. Having a lens that jumps about in aperture as you zoom in and out is a pain in the twunt.

This. Having had a 18-50mm f/2.8 Sigma going back to something that moves aperture as you zoom is a pain. Plus, portrait pictures look a lot nicer when you can blur the background! I found I used my 50mm a lot less when I had f/2.8 right through the standard zoom range!

Got to be the body, surely?

Not sure if you've used a 1D Mk IV before, but if not, you're in for a real treat (could get expensive though as you'll almost certainly want to get one afterwards!).

(It's a shame they don't have CPS set-up out here. Silver's pretty easy to qualify for, Gold not too difficult, but Platinum is a bit tough, needing 3 bodies with only 5D Mk II, 1D III, IV and 1Ds III qualifying)

So as I wait for my large format camera to be built, I'm reading and learning loads of stuff all over the internet.

A link on the Large Format Photography forum led me to Fred Parker's website, and these two absolutely wonderful guides:

Calculating lens field of view; and

the ultimate exposure computer.

Bless :)

/edit

Another great article, not quite in the same spirit as the above two though ;)

Optimising the f-stop for circle of confusion vs diffraction

(really eye-opening that one, if you can get past all the maths)
