Charlie Brooker's Screenwipe

That was why.

It's weird how closely Charlie Brooker copies VLS in some places but not in others – the 'Magic Noose' bit last night was very much in his style, and he occasionally slips into what sounds like a full-on impersonation. He must be aware that he's doing it. Chris Morris copied VLS exactly in his early work, before he moved onto a style of his own, and it's surprising that someone who's already developed as distinctive a voice as Brooker would still be occasionally slipping into someone elses.

I could have done without hearing another 10 minute diatribe about big brother, or the Denis Leary impersonator, or the animation which was too long and unfunny. The BSG bit was great though, and I really want to see that psychic detective thing.

Forget the VLS comparisons, who these guys really want to be is Clive James.

Actually, I found the BB bit quite good, as I didn't care to watch any of the programme itself when it was on.

I like the show enormously though - great fun.

I don't think Brooker's copying VLS, personally.

There both very different whilst being a little similiar because of the area they're working in and, perhaps, a shared sense of humour.

That, however, is not copying. I think Brooker is excellent and completely his own man.

Oh, and can I add that VLS also did a programme called ''Ads Infinitum'' which was jaw-achingly good. There are a few clips up on youtube.

And, of course, TV Offal was brilliant.

There were parts of last night's programme where Brooker's delivery was exactly like VLS'. The whole programme is more-or-less in VLS' style. That isn't a bad thing because it's a show taking the piss out of bad TV - by definition it's going to have similarities with, say, TV Offal. Brooker's style is distinctive enough to make the show his own, but there are bits where he inexplicably goes from taking influences from VLS to copying him exactly – these are obvious enough that they could be construed as deliberate references, but it's still a bit odd.

Didn't he do a sketch in his Xmas round-up programme where he met some guy in a multi-storey car park to talk about those BBC blooper reels from the 70s, where his contact mentions VLS and Charlie interrupts before he's finished saying the name, "Nah. Never heard of him". It made me LOL, anyway.
