But good on Konami for dedicating another classic game to the wonderous handheld and giving the game a makeover.

This week has seen the Jap release of the Salamder, Twin Bee and Parodius collections -

Metal Slug A. is now out too.

Is the PSP now suffering from a bit of a GBA-alike old school re-release frenzy? I haven't been keeping up with the forthcoming game lists since punting mine. Hope not, it has so much more potential than merely old conversions.

Well....unless you have Mame, or a PS1, Neo-Geo or SNES, these titles are very hard to find normally.

Twinbee was available on the SNES and GBC (sporting slightly different levels) and Paradious game got a PAL release, as did MS 3 on the PS2.

But thats all i think.....(not counting the 8-bit conversions of Salmander).

The rare MSX version of Gradius 2 never saw release in the UK (and its been updated slightly too).

Only MAME sports the other games.

There's a lot of Castlevania around lately. As someone who's never played any of them, where do I start? I was thinking Portrait of Ruin first, but then would the older games feel like a step back? Maybe I could try Symphony of the Night when it hits Live Arcade and move onto the GBA games from there, unless this PSP version comes out first... :)

When you get round to the GBA games, make sure you play Harmony before Circle (not the other way round which is the order they were released). Otherwise you'll do what I just did and cry real actual tears that they took a big step backwards, graphically, sonically, and gameplay-wise.

This looks sweet, been meaning to play this for years...

One thing that does slightly annoy me is the way the string out these remakes and re-releases. They could have easily done Castlevania mega collection ages ago (along the lines of the Sonic) one with nearly all the games on. Still they've got to make money ... :)

BTW - Digging round Wikipedia's Castlevania pages (and jesus theres a lot of stuff on there!) I found this

Haunted_Castle_flyer.jpg

They don't make 'em like they used too, etc.

can you list a few?, not being facetious - genuinely curious for reference purposes...

Loco Roco. Lumines. WTF. Erm... FM2007. And lots of re-releases of stuff. *Cough.*

OK, maybe not 'loads', but two of the biggest games on the machine, plus SCEA's policy would surely cover the (many) directly ported/emulated re-releases.

I think Konami just saw what Capcom were doing with Ghouls'n'Ghosts and reckoned they had to do a similar thing to compete.

The saturn version was supposed to be better! 2 extra playable characters and more weapons and stuff like extra secret passageways that were unfinished in the PS version. Who's saying that it was crap, exactly?

edit: from wikipedia

Notable Saturn differences:

The Japanese Saturn version of Symphony of the Night features Maria Renard as a playable character.

A few new weapons/items/armor for Alucard's game.

A new sprite for Richter is featured in addition to the old one, based on Ayami Kojima's depiction of the character. This is the sprite Richter uses when he fights Alucard in the Saturn version and can be used as a playable character as well.

There are 2 areas of the castle (Cursed Prison and Underground Garden) which were not in the PS1 version. The Underground Garden area features a new boss, the Skeleton King.

Also, when playing as Maria or Richter, certain areas of the castle play remixes of classic Castlevania music, such as Vampire Killer and Bloody Tears.

.::: The Saturn had a few problems with animation and sound IIRC, but indeed in terms of content it was better.
