2007 - A Great Year For Music

January's not even finished yet and I'd say the year is off to a cracking start music-wise.

Currently massively enjoying the following :

Little Barrie - Stand Your Ground A tight bluesy rocky effort. Similar to their previous We Are Little Barrie album, but choc-ful of delightful nuggets. Primal Scream meets Jon Spencer for obvious reasons.

Husky Rescue - Ghost Is Not Real A real grower, simple on first listens but just gels and stays with you. In Zero 7 territory with an ambience for a David Lynch soundtrack. Feels more complete than their first album, Nightless Night jars slightly at first and is an obvious attempt to repeat Summertime Cowboy. Great wintery chilled night time listening

Findlay Brown - Seperated By The Sea Peacefrog continue to forge the downbeat/ folk sound. Only listened to it today but grabs you immediately. Taps Crosby Stills and Nash vein and is going to be a future classic. His biog seems a little contrived but really enjoyed what I've heard so far.

Global Underground - Afterhours 3 Suffers from obvious computer mix syndrome, but a quality tune selection makes a particularly fantastic Electronic CD2 - couldn't possibly fail though by featuring Carl Craig's A Wonderful Life. One of the best commercial dance mix CDs I've heard in a long time.

Field Music - Tones Of Town A short punchy affair that makes for required repeat listening due to constant chug-chug staccato changes of melody and rhythm. Visits similar motifs throughout the album so becomes familiar and catching out at the same time. Reviews have tried to throw all kinds of comparisons and influences to try and pigeon hole it, but really is one of those CDs that achieves something new and different.

Looking forward to :

The Shins - Wincing The Night Away

The Earlies - The Enemy Chorus

Fred Deakin - Triptych

The Bees - Octopus

Adjagas - Adjagas

Explosions In The Sky - All Of A Sudden I Miss Everyone

Jesse Malin - Glitter In The Gutter

Richmond Fontaine - Thirteen Cities

Ma Fleur - Cinematic Orchestra

!!! - Myth Takes

Amon Tobin - The Foley Room

LCD Soundsytem - Sound Of Silver

What's grabbed your attention so far?

I've been enjoying Rainbow, yet another Boris collaboration album. I've not listened to it enough for it to properly trickle into my wee mind though.

Supposedly Shellac will be putting out their first LP in almost seven years at some stage soon, that's the main thing I'm looking forward to.

I've really liked all of the following so far, and it's not even the end of January!

Air - Pocket Symphony

Amon Tobin - Foley Room

Bloc Party - A Weekend In The City

Charlotte Hatherley - The Deep Blue

!!! - Myth Takes

Klaxons - Myths Of The Near Future (fantastic, the hype is justified for once)

but probably my favourite so far is LCD Soundsystem's new album. "Sound Of Silver" is one of the best songs I've heard from anybody in ages

My most anticipated for 2007 is El-P's new one, I'm looking forward to the Timbaland solo, MF Doom/Ghostface collab and the Justice albums also. I'm sure they'll all disappoint though.

So far in 2007 I've very much enjoyed the new !!!, LCD Soundsystem, Pole and Ghost albums. The new Arcade Fire album is pretty great too from the few times I've heard it today.

Ruby by the Kaiser Chiefs is propperly amazing.

Sounds like a Madness album track to me, especially in the verse. That's not necessarily a bad thing though.

Biggest release of the year so far for me is the new Kristin Hersh one.

Looking forward to new albums from:

God Is An Astronaut

Third album from my favourite band due in the first half of 2007, hope they continue evolving their sound.

The Soulsavers - It's Not How Far You Fall, It's the Way You Land

This one has vocals from Mark Lanegan and one of the new tracks sounds pretty similar to Massive Attack's last single. Quite different to their last album, I think this one might get them a whole new fanbase.

Sasha - Involver 2

Heard nothing about this one since it was announced ages ago, it's due in late '07. Should be worth the wait.

Shit, I forgot about this, I recognize about half the artists on the tracklist but not a single track I know. Have to buy this one, AH2 is a fucking brilliant compilation.

Amon Tobin - Foley Room

I love The Killer's Vanilla; the rest is pretty well produced but perhaps a little too experimental for me to really remember fondly, it could well be a grower though.

Noticed local record shop was stocking a promo single, which has pricked my attention. Always been a huge fan of their mix cd's and this is the second xmas running where they haven't produced one, so hopefully the time's been well spent in developing the new album - any idea of dates?

Discostu - seem to remember Modest Mouse having vastly changed their line-up, which might explain.

April, according to Amazon.

Never noticed any mix CDs, I'll have to track them down.

Blurb from their myspace page - The Soulsavers are to return with the new album "It's Not How Far You Fall, It's The Way You Land" This time round, Soulsavers have joined up with Mark Lanegan who provides vocals on 8 of the albums 11 tracks. The album also features cameo appearances by Will Oldham, PW Long & Jimi Goodwin(Doves). It's an eclectic recording, a unique mix of hip-hop, rock, country, soul & gospel. The album was recorded throughout 2005 & 2006, between the bands home base in the North of England, and Los Angeles. The record is due for release in March '07 on V2 Records.

Mix CD's - they're fantastic. Mainly old retro funk, R&B - similar to some DJ Shadow mixes. The guy's not precious about some major rarities featuring either. Not sure where you can get from now, as I always picked them up from Piccadilly Records.

No definite release date, but it it coming.

I'm looking forward to what the Stooges come up with (all surviving band members I believe).

Call me pessimistic, but I'm not looking forward to it at all. Crap title, crap song titles that don't sound Stooges-y at all and the fact Iggy hasn't done a really great album in 30 years makes me wish they'd just leave their legacy alone.

There's a track up at their Myspace page, it's alright I guess but nowhere near previous standards. Their legacy is virtually flawless so I really want this to be amazing but I can't see it happening unfortunately :P

Stooges: It'll be rubbish. These old band comebacks fall into two things generally. Either they modernise their sound and sound bloody stupid, or they keep it much the same vain but ultimately it'll sound a little tired, mellow and lacking in the same youthful energy.

That's a fantastic title. With every upcoming Shellac record I always, always hope for Rapeman V. 2. I'm always slightly dissapointed but still massively happy when I compare an Albini record with everthing else released in the same year.

Fridge might just push him this year though given the quality of the new material I heard them play back in september.

And, oddly enough, I ordered a copy of the Boris/Kurihara Rainbow collab a couple of days ago myself, hope it's as good as it sounds...
