I want a good RPG for the PS2 (not including FF or Dragon Quest). I hear Suikoden III is legend. Is it worth getting?

Yes Suikoden III is very good (IV is OKish and V is decent).

Also look out for Xenosaga 1, Star Ocean 2, Shin Megami Tensei, Shadow Hearts etc. There's loads out there and you can double that figure if you can play US games.

Xenosaga 1 is a USA/JPN only game.

Star Ocean 2 is a PSone game.

I personally think Star Ocean 3 is a decent enough RPG.

Don't like Suikoden III - but that is USA/JPN only.

I kinda like Star Ocean III, it had some good points, namely a fun and interesting (action) battle system and a fun item creation system. Bit of a dodgy plot though and quite the level grinder. Quite challenging too.

Lucifer's Call was pretty fun too. I never finished this because I opted to do the final subquest, which proved a bit too tricky to persevere with the levelling. A very very hard RPG though, forces you to actually strategise much more than the average in the battles. It had a bit of a weird push/pull system whereby exploiting weaknesses result in extra turns for both your team and the enemy. Really nice art direction though, well worth checking out. Also it features Dante as an optional character.

Atelier Iris has some charm, but apparently Atelier Iris 2 is a bit gash.

Rogue Galaxy developed by Level 5 comes out Q1 2007

There are plenty of Strat RPGs on the ps2, if that's your fancy. Disgaea or Disgaea 2 are probably the best of those and shouldn't be very difficult to find.

Sorry i meant SO3, didn't realise that Xenosaga never came out in pal land (especially as they managed to bring out the nasty Xenosaga 2).

Ill always say this and always will, the Shadow Hearts games are some of the best rpg's around, with some really good humour in them. Atelier Iris was ok but could have been so much more, it had such a deep system for making things at shops or on the fly, but it just wasnt needed as the battles were so easy you could just use your most basic attacks and win, although there was one battle that stumped me a few times

Xenosaga is pretty damn good as well but not a scratch on Xenogears

Shin Megami Tensei: Lucifer's Call

Much better than the Digital Devil Saga games which followed it.

Another vote for Kingdom Hearts II here - perhaps not if you're after a more traditional RPG, but it's lovely all the same.

I'm very much looking forward to Rogue Galaxy meself.

Have you played it through? I mean isn't that like saying that Vagrant Story wasn't a scratch on another game by a different company?

Ive played about 30 hours of it, but finishing the series is on my list of things to do, but it employs a very similar battle system to xenogears and story telling approach, but so far its not grabbed me as much as xenogears did, although they have made the battle system deeper which is good

The PS2 has been somewhat dissapointing in terms of out and out RPG's with many inferior sequels to awesome PS1 games.

Anyhow the two PS2 RPG's I'd recommend are Dragon Quest VIII (although VII is better) and Suikoden V (although again both Suikoden I & II are superior, still it's better than both III & IV).

If Valkyrie Profile Silmeria is nearly as good as it's PS1 prequel then you should add it to your list.

Shadow Hearts and Shadow Hearts: Covenant are my two favourite ps2 rpgs.

Atelier Iris is quite good, 2 is horrible.

Disgaea 1 is very good though I didnt like 2 as much.

Wizardry: Tale of the Forsaken Land is an old school style dungeon adventure and is awesome stuff.

Dark Chronicle is beautiful if a little repetitive.

Shin Megami Tensai: Digital Devil Saga is fantastic and PAL players will soon get the second game.

SMT:Lucifer's Call is decent too. Bit like an adult pokemon.

ARC: Twilight of Spirits is gash. Total gash.

Wild Arms 4 is pretty average.

Ars Tonelico is out soon.

Stella Deus is a standar fare SRPG.

Star Ocean: TTEOT is very very lacking in my opinion.

Suikoden 4 I loved this same with 5 and tactics is decent too.

Breath of Fire Dragon Quarter. Worth a look but I prefer the older BOF games. This went another direction.

Dragon Quest 8 is great stuff.

La Pucelle, Makai Kingdoms and Phantom Brave are all srpgs but I wasnt that sold with them.

Magna Carta is a bit weak sauce.

Theres more I guess but thats some off the top of my head. Finished some of them, others I lost interest in and gave up.

I'd say on the PS2 the cream of the RPG crop is the Shadow Hearts games, DQ8, FF12, Suikoden 3, and Disgaea. Though my knowledge of RPGs isn't exactly comprehensive, those are clearly the best of what I have played.

edit - Rogue Galaxy is out in the US on the 30th Jan, and that's looking like it could be pretty good.

Nope, not the end of thread. I'm posting now.

The Shadow Hearts series is comprised of three games that are blindingly fucking awesome. You don't get much better than this on any system, and you need to get them now. I'm glad people in this thread are mentioning it because it's more a 'cult' series than anything else - but by the beard of Moses, as a series it rocks and rocks hard.

Up next is Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne. It was called SMT Lucifer's Call over here, and gave me a lot of enjoyment - it's stylish, has good music, a nice dark storyline and a cameo from Dante. It's also pretty challenging, and I thought it was much better than Digital Devil Saga.

Dragon Quest 8 was a splendid, old style adventure which was distinctly charming. I had a great time the whole way through, even though it felt a lot like an older Snes RPG - at least the battle system did.

Suikoden 3 and 5 are good choices, but disregard 4 - I hear it blows ass.

Nippon Ichi do decent strategy games.

And finally some people hate FFX, but I rather enjoyed it. Not sure how it holds up these days, but as one of the first PS2 games I played it gave me a lot of fun.

But yeah, Shadow Hearts. That's the important one.

Dragon Quest VIII gets mentioned a lot in reccomendation threads and I've got to say I don't see why. I spent a good 20hrs on the game and it was indeed beautifull, with a fantastic score and interesting enemy designs, topped off with good animation. BUT as an RPG it's battles were far too easy, in fact they didn't seem to get any harder then press attack when your turn came around, 20 hrs of that was plenty for me. Have I misjudged it? Does it improve in quality gameplay-wise?

Anyway a bit more on topic... Breath of Fire: Dragon Quarter That's a quality RPG right there.

I'd love to play more of BoF:DQ if only it wasn't so bloody difficult. I've tried like 5 different guides and I'm still stuck on the damn thing. :D

Disgaea, Star Ocean, Shadow Hearts and the first Kingdom Hearts all get my recommendation.

I must be one of the very few to give up on Dragon Quest VIII. ;)
