Miscellaneous Classic Material From the Forum's Crates

The Perfect CD for a Hip-Hop Virgin

Recommend Me Some Classic... Hip-Hop! (focusing on Golden Era late 80s/early 90s classics)

Recommend Me Some Modern... Hip-Hop! (mid 90s til the modern era)

Common - Like Water For Chocolate... and 'conscious' hip-hop (recommending jazzier, smoother, socio-political stuff rather than gangsta/street LPs)

Keith Murray - What a Feeling

A blast from the past, from the album 'Enigma'. Bought the album when it was first released in '96... I think. I loved the album then, not knowing all that much about hip-hop, it's aged pretty well. I was well into Redman, Erick Sermon etc etc back then. Lot's of Erick Sermon production on Enigma.

Man, I just got round to listening to the Jedi Mind Tricks/R.A. the Rugged Man track about 'Nam. R.A.'s verse is INCREDIBLE. Absolutely nuts. The flow, content, emotion, wordplay, OH SHIT. He's such a brilliant MC. An interesting character, too. Some history. The bit towards the end where he's rapping about starting a family, but having "handicapped, spastic, quadroplegic" kids because of Agent Orange... that bit's based on his own father who was a Vietnam vet. Think R.A. had some Agent Orange-affected siblings with real problems.

Anyway, what an insane track. The bit where he has visions of heaven after being shot, and the music gets all mystic and shit. That bit's crazy.

I was saying this last month (Not in such fluid detail :) ). Great verse and he is definately one of my fave US emcees.

I just want to suggest ALL UK hiphop fans go out and buy DJ IQ - Brainfood, Zygote - Beats To Make You Frown and if you like your insane Yoda stuff; The Amazing Adventures of DJ Yoda. I know its been said before by myself, Das etc but having listened to all 3 of these properly today the first two have got some absolutely dope beats and quality selection of the best emcees around that cannot be missed. With Yoda's album its very much in his 'Cut & Paste' vein but if you like it you have to get it for the two insanely good Biz tracks on it, 'Fly Fresh Fellas' feat. Celph Titled, Kwese and 'The Brush Off' feat Aspects.

Its the last time I will mention these albums as they've been featured heavily in the last couple of months but easily the first two are in my top 10 of the year.

Fu-Schnickens - F.U...Don't Take It Personal

This is fucking amazing. Brought to me by my old mate Daimond D, this has to be some of the wittiest, fast paced, mad-shit hiphop I've heard in a long time. 1991 they came out, 92 they dropped this and you all need to own it. I don't know if you can get it anymore so I may upload it at a later date (When I get of my fat arse to do it!)

I guess you old school hiphop fans out there already know about this?

Check this nice track by Hell Razah from Sunz of Man, Talib Kweli and MF Doom in his more aggressive, funnier Viktor Vaughn guise:

Project Jazz

PHAT.

THAT! Is the fucking business man. Amen to that.

Yeah, I listened to it since. It was a nice trip down memory lane, it was fun spotting tracks, but overall it was pretty interesting to see how commercial hip-hop transformed from being great to being pure shite in the space of 3 decades. That last section, following the Rawkus-era stuff, saw a spell of maybe one great track after every 5 to 10 tracks. Compare that to the whole mix up until that point when every single thing was a STR8 GEM classic that defined the art.

Bad track selection? Probably, but the DJ did manage to get the odd piece of niceness in amongst the other modern shite. He did finish with 'Hip-hop is Dead,' though. Maybe he's trying to tell us something?

It was pretty well put together, but got on my nerves after a while though. It was like listening to an octopus DJ on 8 decks with ADD or something. The first 10 minutes with all those street party bangers were really good though.

Yeah I like Jean Grae's rhymes. She always raises a smile.

Yo, check this out: MF DOOM 'Air' - Madlib remix for some of that Madvillain flavour (maybe it's a bit too light and funky to compare it to Madvillain, despite who's involved). It's from that Madlib Mind Fusion 4. Not heard that, but I picked up volume 2 in 2004 when I was in Japan. Think it had an equally nice Doom remix on that too.

And now a request: I noticed Spine Magazine had an uploaded mp3 of a RZA track from that Afro Samurai cartoon that's coming out. Featuring Q-Tip. The link's expired, though. Anyone manage to get it? RZA and Tip, man. Gosta hear that. It's called 'Just A Lil Dude (Who's That)'

Ghostface sample from 'Strap' on the hook, maybe?

I'm liking it, Q-Tip sounds a little phoned in but some nice beats
