A 'friend' at work had a spare after Woolworths initially didn't fulfil his pre order. He bought one from Game on launch day then went away for a week and the Woolies one got delivered. I told him that my little brother was after one for xmas and he had his name down on a list but it wasn't looking hopeful. He said he wanted to spread some Christmas cheer by selling it no profit to make someone's Xmas day.

"But I want to ask around in case anyone has got a better story" he says. Whatever, I thought - and put it out of my mind. So yeah, he sold it to CEX for £250, so presumably some stressed out parent will fork out £350. That's the Christmas spirit!

Anyways, my Mum called to say his pre order had definitely fallen through - in that he couldn't get a Wii before Christmas. Bummer.

So this morning I phoned around a few Game stores, HMV, Virgin, John Lewis - didn't think about Woolies (there are none in Central though?). Game on Oxford St did get 30 in, but there were apparantly about 15-20 people already queueing, even though none of them could have known, they were just chancing it. By the time I would have got there, no chance.

I spoke to a lovely woman at Game in the basement of Hamleys who said yes they were getting a few at 10am or so, she said she nearly fell over when she saw they were having a few in today. So I jumped in the shower, shaved and ran down with a different brother. They were just about putting the boxes away to the stock cupboard, while wheeling them at the same time to the counter and ripping them open to sell immediately. There weren't many people around and I was queueing for maybe 15 mins with Mums who were just buying PS2 games.

So yeah, success! It's not even for me though!

What disturbed me was the cross section of society waiting to buy one:

A builder (in complete building regalia)

Spikey Haired Investment Banker spiv

Tired looking mother

Young 20 something businesswoman

OAP age couple

And me (stylish 30 something man about town)

Can't argue with the Wii's demographic defying sales power...

lol.

I once read a text about how developers were wasting their money chasing the 8-30 male market because in actual fact, the biggest purchasers of games were women over the age of 30. It implored developers to make more games for this market.

What this "research" spectacularly failed to understand, yet anyone with any common sense would twig easily, was that these people weren't buying games for themselves but for their children. With that in mind, I'd confidently say:

Present for kids

Machine for self

Present for kids

Present for boyfriend

Present for grand children

Machine for self

Cavalcade's tip was right on the money - I got there about 9am and got ticket number 10. By the time units arrived at about 11am, it was me, a half-dozen or so middle-aged women, and a few guys including a managerial type in a suit and two who were probably builders. No sign of the investment banker or businesswoman.

Some trekking across town later and I had a Wii and all my accessories, only having to pay Game Tax on the last available nunchuk. Ironically had I not been woken up at about 3am by some prat banging doors, I would not have seen his tip and would've missed out.

However I'm still massively sleep deprived and exhausted. To give you an example after I got the Wii and came in I slept until just now, dreaming about trying to get a Wii. I'm still far too exhausted to play it properly and I've got gift wrapping to do as well as laundry, so it's going to have to wait until tomorrow.

Whay do you need an extra nunchuck? Only for the boxing?

Pretty much boxing at this stage, yeah, something on Wii Play uses it too but I don't think it's particularly major. I considered leaving it but the prospect of family members beating eachothers' Miis on boxing day was just too good to miss out on.

Glad they seem to be starting to appear in the shops - I have 15 hours of overtime due to me tomorrow so I may just nip off from work and go have a look in Glasgow in case any happen to be available.

Worst thing is it's only Zelda I really want just now but I can't bring myself to put up with the GC's aiming since I tried it on a mates Wii.
