Re-issue of the year 2006

To complement the thread on new releases, I think it has been a good year for re-issues. I would particularly recommend

jadewarrior.jpg

and companion releases - instrumental, ambient type stuff in the main. This one has the concept of a whale's journey from the deeps to the shore and back, others have more of an Oriental or Latin feel to them. Excellent background to games such as Disgaea.

Other recommended releases would be

B0clusterreissue.jpg

Short tracks, superb ambience (Mouse on mars must have heard this I am sure)

On the rock side we have

triffids.jpg

haunting music born in the Australian outback (although recorded in London) plus many quality releases from Peter Hammill, Captain Beefheart and others.

I got that Triffids re-issue after someone put a lovely song from it on a rllmuk mix tape for me.

Actually, that was you wasn't it, Cosmic_Guru?

Anyway, the album is pretty nice I guess. Although there was nothing on it quite as nice, in an 80s nostalgic kind of sense, as Wide Open Road.

Also, which Captain Beefheart albums were re-issued this year?

The Depeche Mode reissues were a highlight for me, especially Violator and Music For The Masses, even though they were a bit of a missed opportunity - the 5.1 remixes were excellent, but it would have been great to hear the demos for each album. I wonder if they're available anywhere else...?

Captain Beefheart reissues were

Unconditionally guaranteed

Bluejeans and moombeams

Live in London - Drury land 74

Shiny Beast (Bat chain puller)

Doc at the radar station

Ice cream for crow

Of these the last 3 listed are all excellent IMO.

Definitely. I think the documentaries are excellent as well. The one for Songs of Faith and Devotion is really depressing - it's amazing that they made an album at all, let alone one as good as it is (probably my joint-second favourite with Music for the Masses, after Violator, natch).

Makes me wish Alan Wilder would come back, though. He really comes across as being a real driving force behind my favourite albums.

He looked like he'd been drinking for the last 15 years in the SOFAD doc, didn't he?

Definately Depeche Mode here too, the 5.1 remasters are really great

I've only got violator so far but I'm definately gonna fill my shelf with them all in the new year

good to have the b-sides on them too

same here, everything since hes gone from Ultra to Angel seems to lack something
