Preacher: now an AMC TV show - No comic spoilers please

Okay, watched it and yeah, it's kinda flat, Jesse comes over as way more broken and sad sack-y to an rather annoying degree. Wasn't really a fan of Cass' entrance blowing the surprise right off the bat but otherwise Gilgun is pretty much perfect, occasionally dodgy accent moments notwithstanding (some of his plane dialogue was harder to make out than anything Arseface said). Tulip is great, loved the scene with the kids and shall be gathering some soup tins tomorrow for, er, 'testing'.

Still, early days, pilots often have issues, etc, and I'm inclined to stick around a while longer for Cass and Tulip (and, eventually, the Saint) if nothing else.

As someone who is clueless about the IP, I found it entertaining (mostly because of the presentation) but I didn't connect with anyone or understand the gist of the core story. My understanding is;

Spoiler

Man has a violent past, becomes a preacher. There is a demon thing that goes around, planting seeds in preachers before moving on. This seed gives the priest a power in that people take seriously what they say (i.e give your heart to her).

It felt kind of odd to me, none of the characters really matched up to how I read them in the comic. Different is good though (as long as we aren't talking about Game of Thrones). Will keep me watching I suppose.

I was most worried going in about the word of god looking like a rip off of Jessica Jones, and unfortunately the way they chose to introduce it made it look exactly like that. If they hadn't played it for shocks, or had picked a different scenario it might not have had that problem. Not that it should really matter to me I suppose.

He doesn't/didn't have powers or anything, but if they even stay in the same county as the source material, you'll find out he had a tough upbringing.

If my memory servers me correct, it's even mentioned in the comic as one character who may appear later (hope so!) mentions something along the lines of Jesse not being 'fucking Batman' in an ironic dig at itself for him being such a hard bastard.

Right.  I guess I was confused because Cassidy does have super powers and the Preachers fighting skill was so over the top - particularly snapping that blokes arm effortlessly.   I wasn't sure if they all are meant to have powers.

Yeah, Cass has relatively super strength and reflexes while Jesse's just a really tough sonuvabitch who can fight better than just about anyone. It's something of a plot point later on as Cass can't actually fight very well, he's totally reliant on his strength and speed and actually kind of shit in situations where he's up against people who know what they're doing.

Not familiar with the comic but how come the preacher had super powers/strength before he was possessed by the space sperm?

I get that the space thing was looking for a strong enough preacher. Hence the Tom Cruise gag.

I took that more as it tried a purely good/godly person, then a purely evil/satanic one.. then Tom Cruise (purely weird?) None of which could cope with it..

It's taken to Jesse as he's a mix of extremes.. Tries to be a good person but is capable/willing to do very unpleasant things..

You wouldn't have, not from that episode. It's not revealed in the comics until later either, though my memory is a little hazy.

I can't really remember, but I think you knew more pretty early. Certainly not the whole shebang though.

I was just trying to remember where that comes out in the comic.

I remember there are scenes with the angels in heaven very early on, and you find out that Genesis is missing. But isn't the actual reveal that it's the offspring of a demon and an angel held back, until the point where Jesse goes to rescue Cassidy from the Grail? (and they have the angel imprisoned in the Grail fortress).

I did quite enjoy it - however I did spend quite a bit of time thinking that I would actually quite like to see the Preacher comic turned into a TV series, rather than a TV series with characters with the same names, and a few plot similarities, which this seemed to be. Obviously it might turn out to be a fantastic thing in it's own right, and even if it completely ignores the Preacher comic storyline it could be a good story. But still, I'd like to see the proper Preacher comic story as a TV show.

I guess maybe they are building up to it though - after all the obvious aim here is to come out with another Walking Dead, which will run for a decade or so with 24 episodes each year. So they could be stretching it all out. Jesse getting annoyed with the wife beater could just be the start of his slide into anger and frustration, which ends when

Genesis wipes out his congregation, setting him off on his proper quest to find God - in other words maybe by the end of season 1 we start to see a more broken down and despairing Jesse, similar to how he is in the comics when he is a preacher in Annville.

I guess those guys who turned up at the end and said "We've found it" or whatever are going to be The Grail, right? Or were they angels?

He's not super-powered as such, he was just brought up fighting due to his family (intriguing plot development ahead).

I've forgotten how much Preacher starts in the middle of things. There's at least four back stories waiting to be told coming out of that first episode before they even begin to get into the mystic force stuff.

I was thought they might make more of Cassidy meeting Jesse in the TV show but

Spoiler

it is just a random encounter. Here's your new friend and, by the way, he just happens to be a vampire.

Not having read the comics, I watched this last night and thought it was a great start to a series. Not very much got explained, but the characters were set up nicely, the scenes with Tulip and the kids were brilliant. Finding it difficult to explain, but it was nice to have a strong female character without it having to be rammed down your throat. The scene talking to the 2 kids while building the big gun was nicely underplayed rather than being in your face, the major observations were coming from the girl, not Tulip, which made a nice change.

Really liked Cassidy and Jesse from the off as well, the whole thing felt like it fit, that these were long established characters we just happen to join at this point in their lives. Just a nice refreshing piece of TV, hope they can keep it up

Actually, as awesome as he would be in that role, if he has been seen on set, then, thinking about it, surely he'd be playing Herr Starr. He'd be even more suited to that, and we know he has talent for accents.

He's billed as The Cowboy in a flashback scene

I think that particular character, if that's who he is, is the weak link of the comics for me. I just never found him particularly compelling.

(Comic spoilers)

Spoiler

Having this basically unstoppable force who kills the devil, god and whoever the hell else he feels like, just makes him shit. He's so powerful no one can stop him  and to me that's not exciting, or scary, or 'badass', it's just a bit boring.

He is basically the evil version of a Mary Sue. And when they finally do give him a back story and reason for why he is like he is, it's the most cliché ridden nonsense they could have come up with. He feels like what a child's version of a badass is.

I know others will feel differently , but that's just my opinion on him.

Having said that, I'm with Le Chuck: McTavish is badass enough to pull it off.

You spout all that crap about my favourite character in Preacher, and then say you're with me.

;)

I'm sorry!

Can you explain to me why he's your favourite? Perhaps I just haven't 'got' it yet (I've only read it once before...).

Perfect post/gif combo, btw
