A thread for PS3 owners Here

I am trying to conver an mkv file to play on the PS3, is there a file size limit that the PS3 can handle? Or will 6gig be fine?

It'll work fine, though unless you stream it, it might give some troubles to copy it to the HDD as a PS3 generally only seems to like FAT32 USB sticks and the like.

I haven't seen it, but judging by the comments on GAF and now yours, it sounds stupendous!

It seemed like there was some sort of code of silence on here about it, has anyone else that has tried it just refused to acknowledge it's existence?

It's in the so-bad-it's-good category, but really, this is why Japanese devs should not try to do Western genres. Incroyable.

You can transfer mkvs of any size you want straight onto the internal ps3 hard drive using the java ps3 media server for PC. I've transferred 1080p movies up to 26gb over with no troubles.

I take it there's no way to stream video files downloaded from iTunes through to the PS3? DRM protection or some bollocks? Is there any way to bypass it?

Yes, there's no way of streaming or copying the files to unauthorised devices, due to the DRM. Apparently there are ways to strip the DRM from the file, but as I've never done that I'm afraid I can't help; I'm sure the information is out there if you want to find it.

The 4GB limit only applies to the Xbox 360, or if you're using an external device that uses the FAT32 file system. I've played converted MKVs over 12GB in size on my PS3 with no problem, streamed from my PC over the network.

That is what I wanted to hear.... Thanks guys :)

Sorry I should have been clear: I meant when using external media, yeah, because I don't use streaming. There's always some packet loss that's jarring - sometimes a small amount, sometimes lots - when my wifi-connected PC streams via the router to the cabled PS3. Cue statements that it's my network/router ;)

It will be because you are streaming HD over wifi most likely.

Anyhoo, this weeks update

I've been trying to do a transfer data thingy from my old PS3 to my new 320GB slim but it won't work and tells me an ethernet cable is not connected or the other PS3 is switched off. Neither of these things are true.

I've followed every step of this video...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qM4anitZic0

It says not to use a crossover ethernet cable. I don't know what a crossover ethernet cable is, but I'm using the one that came with the original PS3 and from what I can tell that isn't a crossover.

The cable that comes with ps3 is crossover. I can't see that vid but if it's directly connecting one ps3 to another then it's a straightwire cable you need.

Surely the opposite - crossover for PS3 to PS3 and a straight ethernet cable for each PS3 connected to a router?

I had exactly the same problem at last week. I used a normal ethernet (non-cross over) and it worked once I went into BOTH PS3s and turned off Internet connectivity and Media Player both in Network settings. It seems that if it is on Wifi and trying to use Ethernet at the same time it gets all upset. Worked first time for me once I did this.

Hmmm, I didn't know to do any of that when it worked but I did have my router turned off at the time. I then switched it on during the transfer process, so I hope this isn't why I had to wait five hours for it to complete when it could have taken a few minutes or something.

Anyway, I got the Slim because of all the scaremongering over YLOD in launch models, but that phat mofo stood there in silence all evening while it was saying goodbye to my data. It pissed me (and my bank account) off.

New Firmware update is now available, along with 3D blue ray playback it also adds the ability to control the internet browser cursor with the move control and get access to your facebook profile (wonder if this just fires up the browser?)

PS3 Firmware 3.50 is now available for download, meaning if you own a PS3 and a 3D TV you can now enjoy your very own 3D Blu-Ray player.

The main feature of the update is the addition of 3D blu-ray playback for PS3.

However, a lot of other nifty changes have also been introduced through this update, like the ability to use Move as a web browser cursor and a new XBM-based grief reporting system.

Get the full list of new features and changes below –

3D Blu-Ray support

PS Move can be used as web browser cursor.

Users reports can be sent from PS3 through the ‘Friends’ tab.

3D notification screen for 3D enabled games.

Access to your Facebook profile

Better description of the 14 most common errors.

Updated user interface for PlayStation Plus in PlayStation Store.

New Qriocity icon in the Music section. Service still unavailable (EU only).

Get it now.

Damn you Sony and your refusal to accept my password and now I've completely forgotten what it was anyway ... rubbishness

damn you all to hell.

It's just PSN down for maintenance, no need to change your password! It fooled me for 5 minutes (on my US account) till I remembered I'd read about it yesterday
