Will have one of these next week - could someone explain Plus to me?

You basically buy a subscription to rent very specific games from that point on for as long as you pay the subscription.

Also you'll sometimes get exclusive access (read: one week before non-Plus) to demos and 50p more discount on certain game offers on PSN. Oh and it'll auto-download certain content which you still have to install manually afterwards.

You may also notice I'm not exactly a fan of the 'service'.

[edit] I forgot you also get a yellow plus next to your avatar on PSN to show everybody you actually paid money for said service.

Plus has been good value so far with Wipeout HD (July), Zen Pinball (August) and Sam & Max Season 2 (thats septembers offering). Theres also a free Playstaion classic game and a couple of Minis each month.

I like it, its not too expensive and you get some random entertainment. I like surprises, me.

Has there been any info if cross game chat coming in the not so distance future?

It was initially mentioned as part of Plus, yet was swiftly removed. Considering all the rumours surrounding it, I think it's in the works, but Ken knows when it's going to be set free.

Just been reading the Heavy Rain thread, and been completely put off it! :-)

RDR, Arkham Asylum, and Uncharted 1&2 are on my list. Any other worthwhile single player games worth investing in? I loved Fallout 3, so something along those lines would be good (when's New Vegas out?).

Personally, I'd pick up a cheap copy of Heavenly Sword. I make no bones about the fact that I love the game with a passion. Not blind to its faults, but just think it's done superbly well.

I adored Heavy Rain, can't believe the slating it got on here. Not without its problems but a unique experience that's really stayed with me. Would suggest renting it to be honest, you'll be done with it in six hours or so.

Also it's the first one in the series I've really, really got on with, and some of the cutscenes are far too long, but MGS4 was great fun. Some great changes of pace and you don't have to be quite so stealthy as in previous games, you can totally run and gun most of it which takes the pressure off the stealth-averse like me.

I got it for a fiver and thought it was totally worth it. Infuriating at times and ridiculously clichéd at others but it's short and sweet.

Anyway Jamham - Valkyria Chronicles and Yakuza 3 are fantastic single-player experiences, but be prepared to put in more hours than you would playing the likes of Batman and Uncharted,

I was bored and decided to play Super Stardust HD but it said I needed to download a 239MB update! I thought the game was glitched or something but somebody said that it's the 3D patch. This is the first time the updating stuff has seriously annoyed me.

You can just press circle to cancel an update, if you don't mind not being able to play it online.

Do 'Plus' users get automatic game updates, a la Steam, or is it still "we'll wait until you want to play it before we ask you"?

You schedule a time when your machine will switch itself on each day, then it'll queue up any pushed content — demos, et cetera — and will download any updates for the last 10(?) games you've played.

I'm not sure how it works for firmware updates. I assume you'll still have to do those manually on account of agreeing to the EULA.

If that "update last x games" is right it seems pretty retarded, I was considering going down the plus route mainly for the automatic updates but for me they are more frustrating if I go back to a game after a period of inactivity e.g. a friend want's to have a quick bit of co-op on a game I haven't played in a while so he has to wait half hour while I download/install all the patches. I assumed it would just update everthing that was registered on your account :unsure:

Same here, just decided to play it recently. However, it only took a few minutes to download so not majorly bothered.

Problem is the download speeds are hugely inconsistent, 2 days ago I downloaded a demo (hawx2 I think) at 1.5Gb took about 25 minutes, last night I had to download a 21Mb update for Just Cause 2 which took nearly 15 minutes!! thats mental. Thats on a wired cable 20meg connection and I constantly get this with PSN hence the interest in the auto downloads

The Stardust update is huge because they rewrote a lot of the graphics engine to get it running stereoscopically; as a knock on effect the 2D mode runs better. I get where you're coming from, though, and I hope Sony swipes Microsoft's patching magic next time around.

As for the limit on which games are automatically updated, I'm not 100% on whether that's the case or not. I could have sworn I read it as part of an official Sony statement but I've yet to track it down again. Could just be a case of Chinese whispers.

Genuinely excited about picking up a PS3 for my birthday next week! Games aside, what else should I download/do with it?

Get PS3 Media Server:

And connect your PC/Mac to stream stuff. Download Flower if you want to have a zen-experience (or wait for the Move compatible version) and if you've got an HDTV get WipEout HD to get some proper visuals. Or just browse the PS Store and get some demos (they've cleaned the interface a bit, but it's still somewhat confusing).

And get Vidzone from the Store. Might take a while to let it install, but it's excellent to watch music videos with.

Are you coming from a particular angle? There's a lot of stuff you can do, up to and including curing cancer.

Edit: Psh, neg me will you? Folding@Home literally aims to cure cancer, I wasn't being (entirely) facetious just trying to get a better idea of what sort of thing to suggest.

iPlayer's a favourite given that most people don't have their PCs hooked up to their TVs; ITV will be added soon and hopefully 4OD. The PS3's web browser is serviceable enough, too.

Naturally it's a Blu-ray player, but it will also do a good job of upscaling regular DVDs assuming you're using a HD TV. The Media Server software Cyhwuhx mentioned takes care of the streaming angle, too.

If you have a PSP you can set up Remote Play. This allows you stream content to your PSP over wireless LAN, or even when you're out and about via Wi-FI hotspots. Personally the extent of my usage has been watching TV episodes in bed.

It has some cool photo features, although I haven't really used them much myself. They recently added Picasa/Facebook support for album syncing, but in local terms it has some nice showy methods of presenting holiday snaps or whatever other imagery you wish to share with consenting adults within the confines of the home.

The 'Earth' music visualiser is also the best.

I notice you specified "disc-based games", so are you after PSN suggestions?

Is it pretty expensive, yeah. Well, similar to going into Blockbusters I guess. Around £3 for SD rental downloads, couple quid more for HD, last I checked.

This. Stardust now runs at full 1920x1080, instead of the fudged 1080p mode from before. Well worth a 200MB update.
