A thread for PS3 owners Here

It seems as though there's going to be another add on in addition to the 1.3 update for Warhawk called Operation: Broken Mirror

It's well known that we're Warhawk fans, so any time we get a chance to check out updates for the game, we're ready to take to the skies. At GDC 2008, we were able to talk to Dylan Jobe via PlayStation Eye video chat, and also get a chance to run through the upcoming version 1.3 and Operation: Broken Mirror booster pack. Dylan pointed out that the key elements from his initial PlayStation Blog have been implemented. That means that new paint schemes and insignias from the Warhawk contest have been fully integrated into the game, along with a host of VOIP changes for players headed up by the ability to toggle between push to talk and open mic settings. Home integration has been coming along as well, so players will be able to pull out their virtual PSP and immediately create and launch into a game of Warhawk. Speaking of Home, Jobe mentioned that they would love to support trophies within Home, although if they are integrated into the game, he would like to see possible new trophies for Warhawk players aside from the standard rankings and rewards that players currently receive.

Version 1.3 will also feature two new soldier weapons: the bio field generator to heal troops and the mechanics field wrench that can be used to heal vehicles. Finally, there are additional tweaks that will be made within Version 1.3, such as improving the effectiveness, damage, cooldown rates and other issues associated with the .50 cal guns that board members were griping about. The invisible tank glitch will also be addressed again, so players should no longer have that issue pop up in games. Apart from those tweaks, Dylan went on to describe the sneak preview of their upcoming booster pack, Operation: Broken Mirror.

While the new level for the pack wasn't being shown, Dylan did stress that the new vehicle puts a new spin and twist to the gameplay that could have a larger impact on the game than the inclusion of the dropship. In Broken Mirror, Eucadian and Chernovan players will gain access to an APC that can seat six soldiers. These six soldiers can pop out of port holes akin to that on the tank and protect the vehicle when necessary. However, like the dropship, the APC is useful for more than simple transport missions. It can ram through just about any vehicle or emplacement (with the exception of tanks), instantly killing or destroying its target. It can deploy a electromagnetic bubble shield, which your troops can fire out of, but will neutralize incoming fire. It will also short out enemy vehicles and make aircraft critically fail if they come into contact with this shield, protecting ground troops from dive bombing attacks.

What's more, the APC can be used as a mobile checkpoint, allowing players to spawn inside of an APC that's driving around the map. This means that you can potentially rejoin the fight on the battlefield without having to trek across some distance if a checkpoint is being fiercely fought over. But there's an additional plus to spawning inside the APC, which is that players will randomly receive one weapon that can be immediately used. So you could emerge from the vehicle you spawned into with binoculars, flame throwers or other items.

While we weren't able to find out times for release for either Version 1.3 or Broken Mirror, we were able to confirm that version 1.3 will be a free update. Jobe suspected that Broken Mirror's price would be somewhat similar to that of Omega Dawn. What he did mention is that he'd love to see the balance for booster packs alternate between ground and air, and mentioned that he didn't see any naval booster packs ever entering into the picture because of the game mechanics.

After we spoke to Jobe, we jumped into a quick team deathmatch mode which featured the new weapons and APCs. We found that even for their size, the APCs were easy to drive, and typically had a speed that was a little bit faster than that of the tank in normal motion. During the charge move, the speed increased significantly and lasted for a few seconds, but cornering or turning was hampered during this process. We also managed to deploy the bubble shield rather effectively, driving into an enemy base and setting up a defensive perimeter that we could snipe soldiers from.

The two weapon additions were also nicely integrated into the gameplay, with the wrench and the bio-field replacing the knife and land mines respectively when collected. To switch back to those items, you simply needed to double tap the D-pad in the direction of the item you wanted. The wrench comes with 400 points of "ammo," and can be applied to heal any vehicle by striking the side of a machine you're standing next to. Conversely, you can use the wrench to slowly break enemy vehicles apart by hitting them with the tool, and its surprisingly effective as a stealth attack against damaged gear.

The bio-field can be used as a weapon, but its attack is a bit more insidious. Instead of aiming at an enemy, it's deployed in a general area of effect for what appears to be thirty seconds or so. Any ally walking into the field is slowly healed, while enemies start taking damage and die. What we found was a particularly nasty technique was capturing all of the checkpoints on a map before placing the bio-field emitters inside the enemy base near their spawn points. Immediately when an enemy would spawn in, they were in danger of taking damage. Plus, if carefully mined around the perimeter of the field, the explosions would continually whittle the other team down.

Are there any connectivity benefits with a Sony phone? I'm due an upgrade and was thinking of getting the 850. Thought it might be possible to send images to the PS3 or something.

You can use the USB cable that you would normally use to connect your phone to a PC, to also transfer photos and video to your PS3. Not sure if you can copy music from one to another, mind.

Can anyone recommend me a decent cheapish Bluetooth headset which I can use with the PS3? Played some 5v5 on Fifa last night and was crying to be able to communicate with the others. Other than that, it was awesome!

EDIT: Just had a quick look on the net and came up with this one. Should do the trick, I think and the reviews are good too.

PSN store getting an overhaul:

http://kotaku.com/360944/playstation-store...hauled-in-april

While Metal Gear Solid 4, DualShock 3 and God of War news may have dominated our Destination PlayStation coverage, one other interesting leak came out of the retailer conference. According to sources there, the PlayStation Store is finally getting a graphical user interface overhaul, one planned to arrive alongside Gran Tourismo 5 Prologue on April 15. The revamp of the PlayStation Store is said to give it a look more in tune with the SingStore, which is already accessible from the PlayStation 3 version of SingStar.

Details were light on the change, but beyond a coat of paint, word was that navigation would change to a series of icons running along the bottom of the interface. We don't have official confirmation on this one yet, so consider it rumor for now.

USA PS3 Metal Gear Solid Pack 'Some' Backwards Compatibility

The US PlayStation blog is reporting that a forthcoming Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots PS3 bundle will contain an 80Gb unit with some PS2 backwards compatibility. It will also apparently come with Rumble in the form of a Dualshock 3 controller.

A note in the comments section from Al De Leon, PR Manager, SCEA to his main report stated:

"adeleon replied on February 26, 2008 at 12:44 pm

"Yes, similar to the Motorstorm bundle, the new MGS4 bundle features an 80GB PS3 with some PS2 backwards compatibility."

The official announcement states:

"To coincide with the much-anticipated North American launch of Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots in late Q2 2008, SCEA will introduce a PS3 bundle, which will include an 80GB PS3, the upcoming blockbuster Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots, and a DUALSHOCK 3 wireless controller for $499.99 (MSRP).

As has been announced previously, MGS4 will include a Metal Gear Online “Starter Pack.” If you can’t wait to try out MGS4, the good news is you don’t have to much longer. Those who pre-order the game will be guaranteed access to a multiplayer beta test for Metal Gear Online scheduled for late April. "

Sadly for us, it was also confirmed that this offer is for North America only.

Haze Gets A Hazy Release Date

Free Radical's Haze for the PlayStation 3 has been delayed and delayed again, but they promise us that they've finally gotten the whole releasing the game thing under control. How confident are they? Confident enough to release this new video, complete with May 2008 stamped at the end of it. That's pretty damn sure right there, while still leaving them a period of 30 days to shuffle it around in case they haven't gotten all the delaying out of their system and need a quick fix.

There's not THAT much coming out surely? how financially challenged are you?

I can only think of GT, Wipeout and not sure what else.

Haze has just dropped off the radar with that dull video.

If all you can think of is GT and Wipeout then you should sell your PS3.

My most wanted PS3 title is MLB 08: The Show. The demo is fucking amazing, really. I doubt it'll convert anyone who doesn't like baseball, but it might be worth downloading from the US store and having a go. It's fucking good.

I'm just terrified it'll be the first region-locked PS3 title.

Long overdue if you ask me.

At the moment it just feels like visiting a badly designed website where as the Xbox Marketplace feels like it's actually part of the dashboard.

Nah, it's ok. Much better if you navigate it with a mouse but still fine with a PS3 pad. Xbox Marketplace feels horrible to me after using the PSN store.

What else is coming out then Soong? Seriously.
