A thread for PS3 owners Here

Hello Goaty ♥

Recommended Posts

Did you find it to be a bit out of date or something just isn't right with it?

Well, I've only played it for about two hours, buuuut...

PRESENTATION

The game was clearly developed to be shown in 16:9, which hillariously means most (but not all, for some reason) of the game's non-engine art assets get squashed on a 4:3 set. Including the FMV.

"What FMV?" you ask? The cutscenes are all delivered in pre-rendered sequences that must've been done on a high-end PC using the game's engine, then compressed and put over to the PS3 version.

How compressed I hear you ask? Visual artifacting in dark scenes aside, the audio has the tinny buzz about it of a piece of sound that's gone through a harsh filter then driven down to about 128kbps quality MP3.

That extended to the in-game audio, which is so muffled, tinny, fuzzy and badly mixed that it's impossible to judge distances or work out what many in-game characters are saying.

Are you playing it on a SD set?

Gameplay wise it's... passible. I've yet to work out if my headset even works since the speech toggle button doesn't give you any idea of when it's set to ON or OFF on screen. It might be reasonable after extended play, but the single-player campaign reaks of Quake III Revolution, which was only ever passible even back in 2001. I've also lost my connection to the offical servers about eight times. Oh, and you have to leave a server to check up on your friends. There's no Invite option. It's a game developed by people who must have never played Halo 2, Halo 3, Warhawk, CoD4 or any recent console FPS.

The controls are nowhere near optimised for the Sixaxis pad like HL2, CoD4 or Warhawk. But it does support the Dual Shock 3.

Oh, and there's an online campaign mode which the manual never really mentions properly and the option to install 2GB ofdata to the HDD to improve loading, but they never actually go into that in the manual either. Or tell you how big the install will be before it begins.

That FMV problem sounds similar to Stranglehold on the PS3, which I was given for Xmas. The cutscenes looked identical to the in-game engine but they were heavily compressed with artifacts everywhere. It looked really, really shoddy but in that respect it did at least fit in with the rest of the game.

The whole game has an rough outline to it. I was expecting it to have cleaner lines like Gears of War but I have gotten over it. The cut scenes are not a problem as they are almost pointless in the game.

Re. Unreal.

Well, I've played mine for an hour or two today and loved it. Ran around, blasted loads of fuckers in campaign and online, never had to look at the controls option just to have a quick game. Graphics are so smooth - no endless jerk like most PS3 stuff, draw distance is great. Story is hilariously cliched. Excellent stuff. COD 4 (whilst great) and many other games have put me off by taking themselves so seriously. Once you pass the age of 13 it becomes embarrassing to play that kind of thing IMHO. No probs with Unreal.

Really hope this game gets supported as I'm looking forward to lots of new downloadable stuff. Nothing in the Euro version to get so far????

Please add me if you're playing.

Oh bloody hell I'll have to buy it now.

Despite having gripes with it, I have had a great time playing it online. The only thing is that nobody speaks, which seems to be a feature of PS3 online. Other than that it is really good fun and with the ability to add mods and maps, this game should have some legs.

What do you mean, there's already a host of custom made downloadable content for the PS3 version, are you saying that the stuff out at the moment isn't compatible with the PAL release?

Anyway, for all the PS3 mods, go here.
