A thread for PS3 owners Here

Hello Goaty ♥

Recommended Posts

Oh fuck, my dads work mate set it up for us today, I have no clue what the WEP is, how can I find out?

:P

Access the router via a webpage ( i.e. on my Bebox I use http://10.0.0.138/ ) and in there should be a configure option somewhere. What router are you using?

Listed under the security should be the encyption key and this is what the PS3 needs to access your network.

Providing you haven't set up a static IP then you should be able to use the default settings for ip and dns values.

It should connect straight through but it's worth running the network check on the PS3. It's under network settings.

Anyone using optical sound? I'm not but someone here just asked why his wont work. He's plugged it in right, and has selected optical from the XMB menu but no sound... any ideas?

I'm using optical out and it does this strange thing: When I'm in the menus my amp won't register any signal until I start moving around the XMB. It won't register the first "click" but will register the rest and show it is receiving a signal. When my 360 is connected it always shows up as showing a signal.

So yeah, it's a bit odd with Optical.

I use the optical out, and it's a similar deal. The PS3 output stops sending signals when it's silent in the XMB, so my amp effectively shuts down.

Really? How odd. Mine doesn't thankfully.

You can't "rip" Blu-ray discs with a PS3; the discs themselves may begin to feature PSP-encoded videos for download to the PS3 and copying over. Dodgy internet journos are to blame for that misconception.

In other news, I imagine me vesh and uncle mike will need an extra player in Burnout to do the 4 player challenges. The only requirement is that you own a decent headset! And are willing to slog through the 50 challenges.

Anyone interested?

Yep, I have a wired Plantronics headset which I use for work softphone. When are you planning to do the challenges? Mon, Wed and Fri evenings are no good for me as I'm at dialysis.

Mine doesn't either. All I had to do when I set up my PS3 was to change the audio from coming through the HDMI cable to coming through the optical one.

Easy as.

In other news...

I managed to pick up The Orange Box cheap and gave it a go last night. It just brought back how much I do not like the PS3's pad for FPSs. Didn't really notice it when i played through Resistance but I suppose coming off of the 360 version to this highlighted the actual feel of the pads. It's the tactile nature of the sticks that doesn't feel comfortable to me.

Really? I found Resistance to be an annoying hellmess to control, but HL2 (when I whacked the sensetivity on the look control up to about a third instead of almost zero) was an absolute joy. I've been headshotting all over the place.

Tonight hopefully! At around... 9pm.

Reverse for me. No problem at all with Resistance but something felt wrong with HL2.

From what I've read about Orange Box on PS3, it's frame rate issues. I played through on PC, so can't comment. If that's the case and the PS3 port is sub-standard, that's not great news from a company like Valve. Still, I think PlayStations have always been rather difficult to program for in their initial years.

Just so you know, Valve outsourced the PS3 port of the Orange Box to EA.

Hey guys, what's the deal with the PS3 and 1080p games? I'm getting a new TV and wondering about getting a 1080p one. Now, as I understand it the 360 just upscales everything to 1080p, so even if the game doesn't actually support the resolution it's not a problem. From what I remember reading on here the PS3 doesn't do the same, and so a game can look worse on a 1080p set if it doesn't support the resolution. If this is the case then I'd just settle for the middle ground of a 37" set, but I'd like to know either way.

Started Half-life 2 last night. Got to the Hover boat thing then saved and quit, havent experienced any frame rate issues yet, will continue later. Controls seem fine after increasing sensitivity to about 1/3, no problem aiming. Strangely Gordon seems to be sporting some insane shoulder pads as Im always getting stuck going through doorways and small spaces!

I haven't noticed much in the way of frame-rate issues, but then I'm still on Half-Life 2, and I've heard it gets pretty bad in Ep1 and Ep2.

Personally, I had more problems in Half-Life 2 than in either of the episodes.

I had nothing go wrong at all in Episode 2 if memory serves.

As the number of 1080p games are rather thin on the ground, unless you are going to use your PS3 for Blu Ray films, I doubt you will be missing out on much. The ones I can think of from the top of my head are GT HD (downloadable one track demo) Tekken 5 Online, VT3, Lego Star Wars Complete Saga.

I have not had any games upscaled to 1080p which are native 720p, picture looks fine, (but then my tv "only accepts a 1080p signal" and is not a "true HD" one... )

I should think the picture quality will be down to the tv you end up choosing

Ridge Racer 7 & Gaiden Sigma too IIRC.

Re: HL2 frame-rate issues. Check the HL2 thread. Either the US version of the PS3 port is a gigantic fuck-up, or people are talking crap. I had three periods in HL2, from the original to Portal, with frame-rate problems. the crash bugs on the other hand...

PlayStation Home Coming In Spring With All New Stuff

A new and improved Home is reported to arrive on the PlayStation Network in Spring of this year, GamesIndustry.biz writes today, a taste of which is on hand at Monaco's Imagina 08 exhibition. What's changed? It sounds mostly cosmetic, as a new environment replaces the enclosed apartment, described by GI.biz as a "serene outside space, with plenty of room for people to interact, and tables with fully functional chess and draughts games included."

According to the report, user feedback changed a good portion of the virtual living space, with a streamlined theater and a wider variety of "apartments" being readied for launch. Sweet. Who else can't wait to virtually walk around and collect some virtual stuff?!

Notes

- All titles have been checked as being 1080p compatible firsthand by the back of the game box and/or by owning/playing the game at 1080p resolution. Unlike what is happening on the Xbox 360 game boxes, Sony doesn’t advertise 1080p on the back of game boxes unless it is a truly native 1080p title. A good example of this is the game Warhawk where in the Playstation Store they say it scales “up to 1080p” not that it is native 1080p. The Xbox 360 list of games advertised on game boxes is longer, but there are a small few number of native 1080p titles on the Xbox 360.

- games denoted by [ps] are sold via the PlayStation Store

Opposed to three on the Xbox 360 -

[native 1080p] Boogie Bunnies [Xbox Live Arcade]

[native 1080p] Street Home Court

[native 1080p] Virtual Tennis 3

I have a 37" Sharp Aquos 1080p LCD tv and it just simply switches resolution depending on the PS3 game. The XMB launches in 1080p and switches automatically to 720p when I stick Uncharted in for example.
